Sapien is a network for verifying human and AI judgment work, built around a system the project calls Proof of Quality (PoQ). A buyer defines quality as a written rubric, a panel of independent validators scores each item against that rubric, consensus resolves a single verdict per item, and the rubric, the verdict, and the level of agreement are sealed as a permanent on-chain attestation. The point is that a reviewer's reasoning normally disappears once a review ends, and PoQ keeps a verifiable record of how the decision was reached.
SAPIEN is the network's token. This page describes one specific token: the ERC-20 deployed on Base at 0xC729777d0470F30612B1564Fd96E8Dd26f5814E3. A live read of that contract returns the name Sapien, the symbol SAPIEN, 18 decimals, and a total supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens.
The name is not unique in crypto, so the contract address matters. A separate and older ERC-20 called Sapien Network with the symbol SPN lives on Ethereum at 0x20F7A3DdF244dc9299975b4Da1C39F8D5D75f05A, uses 6 decimals, and has a supply of 500,000,000. It comes from a 2018-era social network project of the same name. The two are different contracts on different chains, and a wallet or exchange reference to "Sapien" should always be checked against the address.
Official sources:
The current Sapien company is publicly reported to be led by Rowan Stone, previously involved in the creation of Base at Coinbase, with Trevor Koverko, founder of Polymath, as a co-founder. The token generation event was announced for August 20, 2025 on Base, with an initial release of a quarter of the fixed one billion supply and the remainder scheduled over time.
Founder detail beyond that is thin in primary sources, and the project's own documentation focuses on the product rather than the team. Treat leadership claims found on third-party listing pages with caution and prefer the company's own announcements.
The PoQ pipeline documented by the project has three phases:
Define
The buyer writes a specification, expressed in a poq.toml project file, that lists the dimensions to be judged, the weight of each dimension, the bar an item must clear, and the reward paid per completed review. Dimensions are plain questions, such as whether an answer is factually correct or whether a label matches the rubric.
Validate A base panel scores every dimension. The engine then derives two independent ratings from 0 to 100 for each datapoint: a Quality Rating, meaning the answer the panel landed on, and a Consensus Strength, meaning how tightly the panel agreed. If a required dimension is below its bar, an escalation ladder adds the next class of validators and re-scores, until the item is verified or the ladder runs out. A common configuration uses an ensemble of AI validators for the base round and escalates split items to human experts.
Attest The resolved verdict is sealed on-chain and rolled up into a signed PoQ Report. The attestation is what makes the fast automated path usable, because the buyer does not have to trust the review process to check the record of it.
Validators carry a reputation record that follows them across verifications and governs their standing and access over time. The documentation describes per-class reward and stake parameters, and the developer API exposes fields including rewardCents and stakeWei.
poq.sapien.iopoq.toml project specification, which is the source of truth for how an item is judgedSAPIEN is presented as the coordination asset of the network, tied to staking by validators, reputation, and incentives for reliable work. It is worth being precise about what the public developer documentation actually specifies today. Reward and stake parameters in a project specification are written as USD-denominated strings, such as reward_usd and stake_usd, and the API returns a per-review reward in cents alongside a stake field. The documentation does not spell out the settlement path from those figures to the token.
The honest reading is that the token's role in the live product is not fully described in the public docs, and a reader should check the project's own token documentation for current mechanics rather than assume that every reward is paid in SAPIEN.
Two things stand out. First, the output is an attestation rather than a dataset delivery: the artifact is a verifiable record of how a subjective judgment was reached, which is useful for audit and compliance work and not only for AI training. Second, the token contract is unusually plain. The verified contract, named SapienToken, exposes maxSupply(), permit, nonces, and eip712Domain alongside the standard ERC-20 functions, and nothing else.
There is no mint function, no burn function, no owner, and no pause. The EIP-1967 implementation slot reads zero, so the deployment is not an upgradeable proxy. The consequence is direct: the supply of 1,000,000,000 is fixed by construction and cannot be increased by anyone, and the contract offers no way to destroy tokens either. Any so-called burn would be a transfer to an address nobody can spend from, which leaves the reported total unchanged.
Compared with other data and AI coordination networks, Sapien is narrower and more procedural:
Security here has two separate layers. The token contract is secured by being small and immutable: no privileged role can mint, pause, blacklist, or upgrade it. That removes an entire class of risk that affects many newer tokens.
The network layer is different. Quality depends on validator selection, the escalation ladder, the reputation system, and the economics of stakes and rewards. Those are protocol and application choices that can be changed by the operator, and they are not enforced by the token contract.
Verification of subjective work is a real and unsolved problem for AI teams. Most review processes end with a number and no record of how it was produced. Sapien's attempt to turn that record into a portable, checkable artifact is a specific and testable idea, and its token contract is one of the cleaner ones in the sector.
SAPIEN trades on centralized exchanges and on Base decentralized exchanges. Availability and trading pairs vary by jurisdiction, and some brokerages in Canada and Europe have listed it. Always confirm the Base contract address before trading on a decentralized venue.
SAPIEN has been listed on venues including:
Pairs are typically quoted against USDT or USD where supported.
Base uses standard Ethereum address formats, so the address will look identical to an Ethereum address. Confirm the network is Base, not Ethereum mainnet, before any deposit or withdrawal.
