Persistence One is a Cosmos-based blockchain ecosystem that is repositioning itself as a liquidity hub for Bitcoin finance (BTCFi), and XPRT is its native staking and governance token. The project's goal is to let users swap between the many wrapped and bridged versions of bitcoin quickly and with minimal slippage. That matters because BTCFi has produced dozens of BTC variants across different chains, which splits liquidity and makes moving value between them slow and costly.
The ecosystem runs on the Persistence Core-1 chain, an independent proof-of-stake network connected to other Cosmos chains through IBC.
The official documentation says it is maintained jointly by Persistence Labs and the Persistence Foundation. The individual founders are not named on the official pages reviewed for this article.
The Persistence Core-1 mainnet (chain ID core-1) is the foundation of the ecosystem. The project has evolved over time: the chain's source code describes it as a hub that other chains in the ecosystem connect to for interoperability, the docs note a v3 chain upgrade that changed the default wallet coin type from 750 to 118, and the current focus is BTCFi and cross-chain Bitcoin swaps.
Persistence Core-1 is built with the Cosmos SDK and uses CometBFT consensus, according to its Cosmos chain registry entry. Validators stake XPRT to produce blocks, and holders can delegate XPRT to validators to share in rewards. The chain supports CosmWasm smart contracts, so developers can deploy decentralized applications written in Rust, and it is IBC-enabled, so assets can move to and from other IBC chains through relayers.
On top of the chain, Persistence runs two trading products:
Persistence DEX (V1) A decentralized exchange for trading across the Persistence Core-1 chain and the Babylon Genesis network, where users can provide liquidity to earn swap fees and incentives.
Bitcoin Cross-Chain Swaps (V2) Described by the project as its flagship product: fast, zero-slippage swaps across Bitcoin layer 2s and sidechains, powered by intents.
The official documentation describes XPRT as the backbone of the ecosystem, with three roles:
Native XPRT uses the denom uxprt on Core-1. The docs list bridged versions managed by Axelar on Ethereum (0xD454b59f16D42667Be2fA55292d16647E27f40C4), Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Blast, Avalanche, BNB Chain and Polygon, and an IBC version on Osmosis.
Most Bitcoin-focused DeFi projects either build a new Bitcoin layer or issue their own wrapped BTC. Persistence instead aims to be a neutral venue where existing BTC variants can be swapped against each other, using intents to route orders. It builds this on a mature Cosmos chain that already has IBC connections and CosmWasm support.
Compared with Osmosis, a general Cosmos DEX chain, Persistence narrows its focus to Bitcoin-related assets. Compared with THORChain, which swaps native assets across chains through its own vaults, Persistence focuses on BTC variants already issued on other networks. Babylon, which lets bitcoin secure proof-of-stake chains, is a connected network rather than a direct rival.
Core-1 is secured by a proof-of-stake validator set that stakes XPRT, with CometBFT providing fast finality. IBC transfers rely on light-client verification rather than a multisig bridge, while transfers to EVM chains rely on Axelar or the Persistence Bridge and inherit their security assumptions. The documentation includes an audits section; readers should review it for the current list of reports.
If bitcoin keeps spreading across layer 2s and other chains as wrapped tokens, users will need efficient ways to move between them. Persistence One is betting that a dedicated, IBC-connected liquidity hub can fill that role, with XPRT securing and governing the network underneath.
XPRT trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges, including Persistence DEX on its own chain, and bridged versions exist on several EVM networks. Check the official XPRT page for the correct denom or contract before trading.
The documentation recommends Keplr and the Persistence Wallet for native XPRT, and also lists Cosmostation and Everstake guides. Native XPRT in a Cosmos wallet can be staked directly. Bridged XPRT on EVM chains can be held in wallets such as MetaMask.
