Chia is a layer 1 blockchain that secures itself with unused disk storage instead of raw computing power. Rather than miners racing to hash, Chia has farmers who store precomputed files called plots and prove, challenge after challenge, that they still hold them. XCH is the native asset, used for transaction fees and farming rewards.
The design is Nakamoto-style and longest-chain, closer in spirit to Bitcoin than to a bonded proof-of-stake system. Participation is permissionless and needs no staked capital, and the ongoing cost of securing the network sits mostly in hardware rather than continuous electricity draw.
Official sources:
Chia was founded by Bram Cohen, the inventor of BitTorrent, and is developed by Chia Network Inc. Mainnet launched in March 2021 and marked five years of operation in March 2026.
The genesis block created a prefarm of 21,000,000 XCH held by the company as a strategic reserve, intended to fund adoption and enterprise work. Chia Network Inc. has submitted confidential draft registration statements on Form S-1 to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed public offering, first in 2023 and amended in 2024. No offering has been completed and the company remains privately held, so older coverage treating a listing as imminent should be read as unresolved.
Plotting A farmer runs a one-time, compute-heavy process that writes sorted pseudorandom data to disk as a plot file. Each plot has its own unique key and behaves like a book of lottery tickets that can be replayed indefinitely.
Farming Roughly every nine seconds the network broadcasts a challenge. A plot filter cheaply discards most plots, so harvesters only perform disk lookups on a small fraction of what they store. Any plot that passes is checked for a qualifying proof of space.
Proofs of time Nodes called timelords run verifiable delay functions, strictly sequential computations that cannot be sped up with parallel hardware. These prove real time elapsed between challenges, which prevents a large farmer from cheaply grinding through many candidate chains at once.
Blocks and the coin set Chia produces roughly 32 blocks every 10 minutes. State is tracked as a set of coins rather than account balances. Every coin is defined by a parent coin id, a puzzle hash, and an amount, and can only ever be unspent or spent. Spending a coin releases its value into new coins.
XCH is used for:
XCH issuance follows a fixed schedule rather than a hard cap. The block reward began at 2 XCH and halves every three years, four times in total, settling at 0.125 XCH per block from about the twelfth year onward, or roughly 4 XCH every 10 minutes in perpetuity. Chia therefore has no maximum supply; it has a permanent, predictable tail emission. When a farmer pools, the reward splits so the farmer takes one eighth and the pool takes seven eighths.
Chia is often grouped with decentralized storage projects, but that comparison is misleading. Filecoin, Arweave and Siacoin pay you to store other people's data; the storage is the product. Chia does not store user files by default. Storage is the consensus resource, the way hash rate is for Bitcoin, and plots contain no useful data at all.
Security depends on the total space committed to the network, the honesty and distribution of timelords, and the correctness of the reference client. The plot filter is deliberately reduced over time under CHIP-0012, halving every few years from an initial value of 512 (first reduced to 256 at block 5,496,000 in 2024) and continuing downward for decades, which steadily raises the cost of plot grinding attacks.
Chia is also in the middle of a significant consensus change. Proof of Space 2.0 introduces a single-table plot format intended to make plot compression economically unattractive, closing the gap that specialized compressed-plotting software had opened. The hard fork is scheduled at block 9,562,000, expected around November 2026, followed by a 256-day window in which both plot formats remain valid, after which the original format stops being accepted. Farmers have to replot to stay competitive, so check the current activation status in the official documentation.
Chia is the most fully realized attempt to build a Nakamoto-style chain on a resource other than computation. Its consensus research, coin set implementation, and offer file design are concrete contributions other projects can study and reuse. For readers evaluating energy-conscious base layers, it is one of the few options that keeps permissionless entry instead of substituting bonded stake.
XCH trades on a number of centralized exchanges, mostly against USDT, and also on Chia-native venues that settle through offer files rather than a custodial order book. Availability, pairs, and regional access change over time, so confirm support on the venue before transferring anything.
XCH has commonly been available on:
After purchase, XCH can be held:
Chia addresses use the bech32m format and begin with xch1. Confirm the address format and network before sending, because XCH sent to an address on another chain cannot be recovered.
