Arweave is a decentralized network for storing data permanently, described by the project as "a permanent and decentralized web inside an open ledger." Users pay once, in AR, and the network is designed to keep serving that data indefinitely instead of charging rent. A self executing endowment, funded by that upfront payment, pays miners over time. Data is served through gateways, forming what the community calls the permaweb.

The yellow paper, "Arweave: A Protocol for Economically Sustainable Information Permanence," lists Sam Williams as first author alongside Viktor Diordiiev, Lev Berman, India Raybould and Ivan Uemlianin. Williams is widely reported to have started the project with William Jones while both were doctoral students, announcing it as Archain in 2017 before the rename to Arweave and the network launch in 2018. Backers have included Andreessen Horowitz and Coinbase Ventures.
Data sits in a structure called the blockweave, where each block references the previous block and an older block recalled from history, so miners are rewarded for holding old data, not only recent data. Recent versions formalize this through Succinct Proofs of Access and Replication, with chunks packed using RandomX so one stored copy cannot be claimed as several replicas. Mining combines a verifiable delay function step with hashes over data read from the miner's own partition and from a random offset across the weave. Block rewards are released after about thirty days, letting the network slash miners that sign competing forks.
AR is the payment asset for storage. An upload pays a placement fee plus an upfront contribution to the endowment, sized so users cover twenty replicas for 200 years at current storage costs. Miners are paid from transaction fees, a protocol inflation reward, and endowment withdrawals as they prove ongoing storage. Endowment health depends on how fast real storage costs fall against the protocol's conservative assumption of a 0.5 percent annual decline, the Kryder+ rate.
Nearly every other storage network sells a renewable contract. Arweave sells a single payment for permanence, and it stores data on chain rather than pointing at an off chain deal, so data and ledger share the same security assumptions.
Filecoin, Storj, Siacoin and Walrus sell storage that must be renewed and repaired, with providers matched to clients through markets or contracts. Arweave's difference is the endowment: no renewal, no host to renegotiate with, and incentives tuned to reward holding rare old data.
Security comes from mining tied to storage rather than raw computation, since miners must hold packed data to compute valid hashes. The verifiable delay function paces the mining loop, RandomX packing resists specialized hardware, and delayed rewards with slashing discourage double signing. Nodes validate blocks, transactions and chunks independently.
Permanence is an economic claim, not a physical guarantee. It holds if storage costs keep falling in line with protocol assumptions and enough miners keep replicating rare data. Mining favors operators with cheap hardware and electricity, which concentrates storage, and most users reach permaweb data through gateways, so gateway availability matters. Moderation sits with miners and gateways rather than the protocol, and mistaken uploads cannot be deleted.
Most of the web is rented, and rented data disappears when someone stops paying. Arweave charges once for durability and lets a protocol carry the obligation forward, which made it a default storage layer for much NFT metadata and now underpins AO.
AR is a native network asset rather than a token on another chain, and it trades on major centralized exchanges that support Arweave withdrawals. Wrapped versions exist elsewhere, so check what you are buying, because only native AR pays for storage. Compare AR markets on CoinRithm first.
Native AR is held in an Arweave keyfile or a wallet supporting the network, such as Wander, available as a browser extension and mobile app. Hardware wallet coverage is narrower than for Ethereum style assets, so confirm support first. If you plan to upload data, keep AR in a wallet that signs uploads directly, since exchange balances cannot pay storage fees.
