Irys is a Layer 1 blockchain that stores large volumes of data on chain and lets smart contracts read that data directly while they execute. The project describes the design as a "datachain": storage, data availability and an Ethereum Virtual Machine compatible execution environment live inside one protocol rather than being split across a storage network, a separate data availability layer and a general purpose smart contract chain.
IRYS is the network's native asset. It pays for uploads, for execution on IrysVM, and for the bonded collateral that miners and validators must post to take part in consensus.
The practical difference is narrow but consequential. On most chains a contract can only hold a hash or a URL pointing at a file kept elsewhere, and has to trust an outside service that the file still exists. On Irys the bytes themselves sit in the protocol's own ledgers, and contracts can stream ranges of those bytes into a call.

Irys started in 2021 as Bundlr Network, a bundling service that batched many small uploads into single settlement transactions on Arweave. Bundlr let developers pay for permanent storage in several different tokens without operating Arweave infrastructure themselves.
The project rebranded to Irys in October 2023 as its scope widened from bundling for another network toward building a chain of its own. The whitepaper, titled "Irys: A Programmable Datachain for Verifiable Storage and Onchain Computation," is credited to Josh Benaron, Dan MacDonald and Jesse Cruz Wright.
A public testnet opened in January 2025. The Irys Layer 1 mainnet and the IRYS token generation event followed in November 2025. Backers named on the project's own site include CoinFund, Lemniscap, Hypersphere, Framework and Primitive.
This history matters when reading older material. Anything describing Irys purely as an Arweave bundler is describing the Bundlr era, not the current network. The legacy upload and gateway endpoints still resolve, which makes the distinction easy to blur.
Irys is usually explained through four mechanisms.
Hybrid Proof of Work and Stake consensus Block production is tied to disk reads rather than raw hashing. The protocol assigns each miner a random 200 MiB sequential read every second, paced by a Verifiable Delay Function so nobody can race ahead. The miner splits that read into 800 chunks of 256 KiB and hashes each one looking for a solution. Miners also post stake and can be slashed, so storage claims carry an economic cost.
Matrix packing and unique replicas Before a miner can mine a region of disk, it packs that region using a matrix packing scheme that encodes the miner's own address into every 256 KiB chunk. Two miners therefore cannot share one physical copy of the same data, which closes off remote mining, where an operator pretends to hold data it actually fetches from someone else on demand.
Partitions and ledger promotion Ledgers are divided into partitions of 16 TB, a size chosen so that commodity hard drives stay competitive against solid state drives. Miners pledge for empty capacity partitions, pack them, mine them, and are randomly promoted into data ledgers with weighting that favors miners who have been productive. Departures can be orderly, with a timeout that lets replacement capacity synchronize, or disorderly, which risks the pledged bond.
Two transaction lanes Each block carries data transactions and execution transactions in separate lanes. Because the data lane does not compete with contract calls for the same block space, upload pricing stays stable even when execution demand spikes.
According to the whitepaper, IRYS carries these roles:
Two economic details are worth noting. Storage is priced against a United States dollar target and recalibrated annually so upload costs track real hardware economics rather than token volatility. And IRYS has no fixed protocol ceiling: the initial issuance was set at 10,000,000,000 tokens, of which roughly 20 percent unlocked at the token generation event, with new issuance beginning near 2 percent annualized and halving every four years toward a terminal rate of about 0.25 percent.
Against that issuance the design applies two sinks. Fees paid for extended duration and permanent storage flow into the endowment and are effectively locked indefinitely, and half of every IrysVM execution fee is burned outright, with the remainder paid to the block producer.
Arweave targets permanence and pays for it through an endowment, but it is a storage network first and does not run a general execution environment over the stored bytes. Filecoin builds a marketplace of storage deals with cryptographic proofs, again without native contract level access to file contents. Celestia is optimized for data availability sampling on behalf of rollups, where data only needs to stay retrievable for a window rather than be readable inside a virtual machine.
Irys sits at the intersection and accepts the trade off that comes with it. Combining storage and execution in one state machine means node operators carry both costs, and the network has to keep two fee markets healthy at once.
Security rests on several layers working together: continuous sampling that forces miners to prove they still hold their assigned partitions, matrix packing that makes each replica unique to its holder, bonded stake with slashing that gives dishonest behavior a real cost, and a Verifiable Delay Function that limits how fast the read lottery can be run.
As with any young network, the practical questions are how many independent miners hold capacity, how widely partitions are replicated, and how the client software behaves under stress. The node implementation is open source and worth reviewing directly.
Most blockchains treat data as a payload to reference rather than something to compute over. Irys is a serious attempt to make stored bytes an executable input, with proofs of storage folded into consensus instead of assumed. If applications that need large verifiable datasets keep growing, a chain where files and logic share one trust domain is a useful primitive to have.

Because IRYS exists natively and in bridged form, verify the network and contract address before every deposit or withdrawal. Sending a bridged token to a native address, or the reverse, can result in permanent loss.
