Kite is a payments and identity platform for autonomous AI agents, built around its own EVM-compatible Layer 1 called Kite Chain. The premise is that agents need a verifiable identity, a funded wallet, spending rules set by a human owner and auditable receipts, none of which human-centric payment rails provide. KITE is the native gas token of Kite Chain, which uses chain ID 2366. The chain's first mainnet blocks were produced in December 2025.

Kite does not publish a founder page, and the whitepaper is credited to the Kite AI Team rather than named individuals, so treat named-founder claims elsewhere with caution. Press and exchange research have reported Chi Zhang and Scott Shi as co-founders. The project does publish its investors, including PayPal Ventures, General Catalyst, 8VC, Coinbase Ventures and Samsung Next. KITE reached the market in late 2025 and mainnet blocks began that December.
The whitepaper describes a SPACE framework: stablecoin-native settlement, programmable constraints, agent-first authentication, compliance-ready audit trails and viable micropayments.
The most concrete piece is a three-layer identity model separating the user as root authority, the agent as delegated authority, and the session as ephemeral authority. Each agent gets a deterministic address derived from the user's wallet using BIP-32, while session keys are random and expire after use. Compromising a session affects only that delegation, and compromising an agent stays bounded by the spending rules the user set.
Payments are built for high frequency: the documentation describes opening and closing a channel with two on-chain transactions while thousands of signed updates happen off chain, alongside support for the x402 machine-to-machine payment protocol.
Supply is capped at 10 billion KITE, allocated 48 percent to ecosystem and community, 20 percent to modules, 20 percent to team, advisors and early contributors, and 12 percent to investors. Utility arrives in phases. Phase one covers module liquidity requirements, builder eligibility and ecosystem incentives. Phase two, tied to mainnet, adds AI service commissions, staking rewards and governance voting, with the protocol taking a commission on service transactions and converting it to KITE.
Most agent-related crypto projects are token-launch platforms or compute marketplaces. Kite is narrower, focusing on authorisation: how a human gives an agent real spending power with enforced limits and a receipt trail that supports dispute resolution.
Virtuals Protocol is oriented around launching and monetising agents, and Bittensor around incentivising machine-learning subnets. Kite targets the payment and identity layer beneath any agent. One nuance matters: the Passport changelog states that as of mid-2026 routing spans Base, Tempo and Solana with Base as the default settlement chain, so Passport payments do not necessarily settle on Kite Chain.
Kite Chain is a proof-of-stake EVM network where validators and delegators stake KITE, with staking directed toward specific modules. At the application layer, security rests on the key hierarchy: session keys expire, agent addresses are derived rather than shared, spending rules are enforced in smart contract accounts, and Passport adds passkey and step-up authentication.
Kite is early. The mainnet chain has only produced blocks since December 2025 and the market it targets is still forming. Governance and staking utility are phased rather than live from launch. The stated shift of default Passport settlement to Base raises a fair question about how much activity accrues to Kite Chain and therefore to KITE. A large share of supply sits with insiders and ecosystem funds subject to vesting.
If AI agents transact at scale, identity, delegated authority and micropayment economics have to be solved together rather than separately. Kite is one of the more specific attempts at that stack.
KITE trades on several major centralised exchanges following its late-2025 distribution and on decentralised venues. Availability varies by region and changes over time, so check the live market data on this page.
KITE is an EVM asset, so wallets such as MetaMask and Rabby work once Kite Chain is added using the published chain ID and RPC endpoint. Pair a hardware wallet with a browser wallet for cold storage. Exchange custody removes key management but also removes your control.
