Moonwell is an open, non-custodial lending and borrowing protocol. Users supply assets to earn interest, use those deposits as collateral, and borrow other assets against them, with interest rates set algorithmically by pool utilization. WELL is the protocol's governance token: it votes on Moonwell Improvement Proposals and can be staked in the Safety Module, a contract that backstops the protocol against losses.
The name attached to this asset needs explaining. Moonwell originally shipped as two deployments with two tokens: Moonwell Artemis on Moonbeam, governed by WELL, and Moonwell Apollo on Moonriver, governed by MFAM. The identifier Moonwell Artemis survives in various listings, but it no longer describes where the protocol lives. Today the primary deployment is on Base, with a further deployment on OP Mainnet, and WELL exists as a multichain token on Base, OP Mainnet, and Ethereum. Moonwell's own contract documentation labels the Moonriver addresses as deprecated and sunset and marks the Moonbeam Multichain Governor as sunset, following those two chains halting in August 2026.
Official sources:
Moonwell launched in 2021 and 2022 as an application built for the Moonbeam ecosystem, taking its architecture from the Compound v2 lending design and adapting it for Polkadot and Kusama parachains. The two deployments were named after the Apollo and Artemis space programs, matching Moonriver and Moonbeam respectively, and each had its own DAO and governance token.
The decisive change came in April 2024, when proposals MIP-M23 and MIP-M24 upgraded WELL to the xERC20 standard, making it a single multichain token with unified governance rather than a Moonbeam token with bridged wrappers elsewhere. That is what allowed Moonwell's center of gravity to move to Base without fragmenting its DAO. An earlier Wormhole-bridged WELL on Base was deprecated in favor of the native version, with a migration wizard provided for holders.
Since then the protocol has consolidated further. Moonwell deprecated its Moonriver deployment in January 2026, and the Apollo DAO governed by MFAM has been folded into the main Moonwell DAO, with MFAM holders converting into stkWELL at a reported ratio of 1 to 1.5 based on a snapshot taken at proposal submission. Holders of legacy tokens should verify the current process through Moonwell governance rather than relying on secondary summaries.
Supply and mTokens Depositing an asset mints an mToken that represents the deposit plus accrued interest. mTokens follow the Compound v2 model, so the redemption rate rises over time rather than the balance increasing.
Borrowing and collateral factors Each listed asset has a collateral factor that caps how much can be borrowed against it. Positions are tracked against a credit limit, and a position that exceeds its limit becomes eligible for liquidation, where a liquidator repays part of the debt and receives collateral plus an incentive.
Interest rates and isolated markets Rates follow utilization-based curves published per market, with a kink beyond which borrow rates rise sharply to protect withdrawal liquidity. Alongside the core pool, Moonwell runs isolated markets so riskier or less liquid assets can be listed without exposing the main pool to them.
Vaults and integrations Moonwell operates curated vaults built on Morpho, including USDC, ETH, EURC, and cbBTC vaults on Base, supports USDC transfers across CCTP-supported networks, and offers a smart wallet, virtual accounts, and a spending card layered on the lending markets.
Multichain governance Voting power is counted on multiple chains. Vote collection contracts on Base and OP Mainnet aggregate votes, a Temporal Governor executes approved proposals on each deployment chain, and a Wormhole bridge adapter carries the messages. That is why a WELL holder can participate from whichever network they hold the token on.
Governance parameters are published and specific. On-chain proposals require a proposal threshold of 1,000,000 votes and a quorum of 100,000,000, with a three-day voting period, a one-minute voting delay, a one-day cross-chain vote collection period, and at most five live proposals per address. Snapshot voting uses a 200,000 threshold and a 10,000,000 quorum.
Moonwell documents a total supply of 5,000,000,000 WELL at 18 decimals, and in this case the contract enforces it. The Base address 0xA88594D404727625A9437C3f886C7643872296AE is an EIP-1967 transparent upgradeable proxy whose implementation is a contract named xWELL. Reading the proxy directly returns a MAX_SUPPLY of exactly 5,000,000,000 tokens, and the same value from its maxSupply accessor, so the cap is a hard constraint in code rather than a policy statement.
Two qualifications belong next to that, because an xERC20 is not a simple fixed-supply token. First, the implementation exposes mint and burn functions, but they are restricted to bridge addresses governance has explicitly added, each with its own minting and burning limits, a buffer cap, and a refill rate per second. That is how one token exists across Base, OP Mainnet, and Ethereum without the total exceeding the cap: minting on one chain is paired with burning on another, inside rate-limited allowances. Second, the token is upgradeable and pausable, with a pause guardian and an owner; on Base the owner address matches the Temporal Governor that Moonwell's documentation lists as the executor of DAO proposals. The cap is real, but the code behind it can be changed by governance.
Moonwell's distinguishing feature is that it treats multichain deployment as a governance problem rather than a bridging problem. Instead of separate forks with separate tokens on each chain, it runs one DAO whose votes are collected across chains and executed locally by Temporal Governors, with a single xERC20 token at the same address on multiple networks. The second distinguishing feature is product breadth: few lending protocols also ship curated vaults, cross-chain stablecoin routing, a smart wallet, and a spending card against the same collateral base.
Against Aave, Moonwell is smaller and built on the older Compound v2 architecture, with isolated markets and curated Morpho vaults layered on rather than a v3-style efficiency mode. Against Compound itself, it is far more aggressive about multichain presence and consumer-facing features. Against Morpho, it is a complement rather than a competitor, since Moonwell curates vaults that route deposits into Morpho markets.
Moonwell publishes an audit history and works with Halborn for continuous monitoring. Price data comes from Chainlink feeds on Ethereum, Base, and OP Mainnet, and from API3 data feeds on the Moonbeam deployment. Risk parameters are modeled with Anthias, which publishes a public dashboard for the Base deployment, and a bug bounty runs through Sherlock with rewards documented up to $250,000. A Security Council sits within the Moonwell Foundation, and an asset listing framework requires a market to have enough liquidity to liquidate its largest position before an asset can be used as collateral.
The Safety Module is the last line of defense. Staking WELL mints stkWELL one for one, and in a shortfall event the documentation states that up to 30 percent of staked assets may be sold to cover the deficit. Stakers are paid to absorb that risk, which is the point, but it should not be mistaken for risk-free staking.
Moonwell is one of the larger lending protocols on Base and a working example of multichain governance that goes beyond deploying the same contracts twice. Its migration from Polkadot-ecosystem parachains to Ethereum Layer 2s, carried out through its own proposal process while its original host chains wound down, is a useful case study in how a DAO relocates without abandoning its token holders. Its published risk parameters and candid documentation of shortfall mechanics make it a reasonable reference point for evaluating other lending markets.
WELL trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on Base, where it is paired against ETH and stablecoins, including on Aerodrome. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction.
WELL has commonly been available on:
WELL is an ERC-20 token and can be held in any wallet supporting Base, OP Mainnet, or Ethereum, including hardware wallets. It uses the same address, 0xA88594D404727625A9437C3f886C7643872296AE, on all three, and a different address on Moonbeam. Confirm the network before sending, and remember that voting power only counts once delegated, including to yourself. If you hold the deprecated Wormhole version of WELL on Base, Moonwell documents a migration path to the native token.
