Sia is a decentralized cloud storage network with its own blockchain, and Siacoin (SC) is the utility token that pays for everything on it. Instead of renting space from a single company, a user forms storage contracts directly with independent operators around the world, pays them in Siacoin, and keeps the encryption keys. No single operator ever holds a complete, readable copy of a file.
Siacoin is required for every activity on the network. Renters spend it to store data, hosts earn it for storing data and proving they still hold it, and hosts also lock it up as collateral against the contracts they accept. Sia is one of the oldest working decentralized storage networks, live since 2015, and it is maintained by the Sia Foundation, a non-profit.
Official sources:
Sia was created at HackMIT in 2013 by David Vorick and Luke Champine. The founders formed Nebulous Inc. to develop the network, which later rebranded to Skynet Labs. The blockchain went live in June 2015. Development is now led by the Sia Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to the network's core software.
The project has a notable regulatory history that is worth knowing. In October 2019, Nebulous settled a claim from the US Securities and Exchange Commission relating to the unregistered 2014 offer and sale of Sianotes and their 2015 conversion into Siafunds. The settled order concluded that Siafunds were securities. Importantly, the SEC took no enforcement action with respect to the Siacoin token or ongoing network activity, and the order did not require Siacoin to be registered as a security. The distinction between Sia's two tokens is the reason the outcome differed for each.
Sia has also gone through significant protocol change. A major consensus upgrade known as Sia v2 activated at block 526,000 on June 6, 2025, rewriting the renter-host protocol, and a follow-up network upgrade at block 552,100 around December 2025 removed deprecated fields, fixed a difficulty adjustment bug, and prepared the network for faster syncing.
The mechanics are unusually concrete for a storage network, and they are worth understanding in order.
Client-side encryption Files are encrypted on the user's own machine before anything leaves it. Storage providers receive only encrypted fragments and never the keys, so they cannot read what they hold.
Erasure coding and distribution Each file is split into redundant pieces using erasure coding and spread across many unrelated providers. Only a subset of the pieces is needed to rebuild the file, so data stays available even when some providers go offline.
Storage contracts A renter forms contracts with hosts that set how much data is stored, for how long, and at what price. Hosts must periodically prove they still hold the data in order to be paid. Payment and collateral both flow in Siacoin.
Proof-of-work consensus The Sia blockchain is secured by proof of work using the Blake2b hashing algorithm, with a target block time of roughly ten minutes. Miners validate transactions and contracts, and are paid in Siacoin.
Block rewards that never reach zero Sia's block reward started at 300,000 SC and decreased by one Siacoin per block until it hit a floor of 30,000 SC at block 270,000. It stays at that level permanently. This means Siacoin has no fixed maximum supply and is mildly inflationary by design, so that miners always have an incentive to keep securing storage contracts.
The Sia Foundation maintains an open-source software suite, and which piece a user needs depends on their role.

The documentation is explicit that it is a utility token, not a claim on the project. Concretely it is used for:
Sia's second token, Siafunds, is separate and works differently. A 3.9 percent fee on every storage-related transaction is distributed to Siafund holders. The maximum number of Siafunds is fixed at 10,000, all generated at launch in 2015, and they were designated securities by the SEC in 2019. Siafunds are a revenue-sharing instrument for funding development; Siacoin is the working currency. Anyone reading about Sia should keep the two apart.
Sia's security has both blockchain and storage dimensions.
Sia is one of the few decentralized storage networks that has operated continuously for a decade, with real files stored by real users and a working payment loop between renters and hosts. Its two-token model was an early answer to a question the industry mostly ignored, namely how to fund development without turning the working currency into a security. The 2025 v2 rewrite showed that a small, long-running chain can still make deep consensus changes and bring its ecosystem along.
