RSS3 is an open information project that spent several years building decentralized indexing infrastructure and then, in 2026, deliberately narrowed its focus. Its work is now concentrated on two products: RSSHub, an open source service that turns websites into feeds and is one of the largest RSS networks in existence, and Folo, a consumer reading application. RSS3 is the token that ties the ecosystem together.
Anyone reading older descriptions of RSS3 will encounter a Layer 2 network called VSL and a data indexing layer called DSL. Both have been retired. VSL stopped producing blocks on April 24, 2026, and its assets were migrated to Ethereum. DSL has been folded into the RSSHub stack. That is the most important fact to know about RSS3 in 2026, and most third party descriptions have not caught up.
Official sources:
RSS3 was initiated by Natural Selection Labs, the equity company named in the project's own token allocation as holding 5 percent of supply. The token generation event took place on February 12, 2022, when 1,000,000,000 RSS3 were created. The published allocation lists seed at 4.6 percent, private sale at 10 percent, public sale at 5 percent, early incentives at 10 percent, team at 15.4 percent, advisors at 1 percent, ecosystem at 32 percent, foundation at 15 percent and partnerships at 2 percent. The project states that all vesting schedules have since completed.
RSSHub itself predates the token and was created independently by the developer known as DIYgod, whose repository remains the core of the open information network.
RSSHub turns the closed web into feeds RSSHub is a route based system: contributors write small adapters that convert a site or service into a standard feed. The project's stated goal is to make RSSHub the definitive open information network of the AI era, readable by both people and models.
Folo turns feeds into a product Folo is the consumer reading client built on top of that network. The foundation reports more than 700,000 users and top ten App Store placement in several countries, and the open source repository is one of the most starred reading applications on GitHub.
The token connects infrastructure to products The project's own essay describes RSS3 as a coordination layer, intended to let the people who maintain routes, operate instances and build applications share in the value the ecosystem creates. The essay is explicit that integration will follow the pace of product development, so read this as direction rather than shipped mechanics.
It is worth being direct here. With VSL retired and DSL absorbed, the staking and node operator mechanics that previously gave the token an on chain job no longer exist. The foundation has committed to integrating the token into RSSHub, Folo and future protocols, and has said epoch rewards owed to DSL node operators will be settled through an onchain snapshot, but the new utility has not shipped as of this writing.
Very few crypto projects can point to a consumer product with measurable adoption outside the crypto audience. Folo is one. RSSHub is another kind of rarity: infrastructure that many people already depend on, built in the open for years, with no requirement that anyone touch a wallet to benefit from it. The decision to shut down its own Layer 2 and consolidate on Ethereum is also unusually candid, and the announcement says plainly that non financial decentralized networks have struggled with adoption and sustainable business models.
RSS3 is no longer a chain at all, which is the cleanest distinction to draw. Projects such as The Graph and Arweave remain protocol first: they sell indexing or storage as a network service and the token pays for it. RSS3 has moved the other way, toward products people use directly, with the token positioned to be integrated into them later. Compared with Mask Network or Basic Attention Token, RSS3's center of gravity is reading and distribution rather than publishing or advertising.
The token contract on Ethereum at 0xc98D64DA73a6616c42117b582e832812e7B8D57F is unusually clean. Reading its bytecode directly on September 12, 2026 shows a minimal, immutable ERC-20: name, symbol, decimals, totalSupply, balanceOf, allowance, approve, transfer, transferFrom and the two allowance helpers. There is no owner, no minting function, no burn function, no pause switch and no upgradeable proxy. Nobody can change its rules, and its totalSupply reads 1,000,000,000 RSS3 with 18 decimals.
Security beyond the token rests on Ethereum for settlement and on ordinary software practices for RSSHub and Folo, which are open source.
The open web's distribution layer has been quietly decaying for a decade, and RSSHub is one of the few projects that has pushed back at scale. RSS3's 2026 decision to stop maintaining its own chain and put its resources behind the products people use is a correction crypto projects rarely make in public. Whether the token benefits is unresolved, but the underlying work is real.
RSS3 trades on centralized exchanges and on Ethereum decentralized venues. On chain trades settle on Ethereum and require ETH for gas. Anyone who held RSS3 on the retired VSL network should use the official migration portal rather than a third party service.
