Mask Network is a browser extension and protocol that adds Web3 features to social platforms people already use. Installed alongside X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, Minds, or Mirror, it lets a user publish end-to-end encrypted posts that only other extension users can decrypt, send tokens and NFTs directly in a feed, display a verified Web3 profile, and reach decentralized applications without leaving the page.
MASK is the ecosystem's token. It carries governance rights in MaskDAO, is used in staking programs, and functions as the coordination asset across Mask's products. Development is led by Dimension, the company behind the open-source Maskbook codebase.
Official sources:
Mask Network was founded in 2019 by Suji Yan and is built and maintained by Dimension. The original product was narrow and specific: a browser extension that let people post encrypted messages on Twitter so the platform itself could not read them. Payments, NFT display, and wallet features were layered on later.
The MASK token launched in February 2021 through an Initial Twitter Offering, a sale conducted inside the extension on Twitter itself and reported to have raised around 7.4 million dollars. It was an early and deliberately self-referential demonstration of the product.
In February 2025 MaskDAO announced a restructuring that spun off several projects into independent efforts, including Next.ID for decentralized identity aggregation, Web3.bio for on-chain profile pages, and Firefly as a standalone social aggregator app.
Client-side encryption When a user writes an encrypted post, the extension encrypts it locally and publishes ciphertext to the host platform. Recipients running the extension decrypt it locally. The platform stores and serves only unreadable text and never holds the keys.
Content injection over existing feeds Mask parses the page and renders its own elements inline: decrypted posts, token gifts, NFT previews, profile badges, and scam warnings. Nothing about the host platform's backend changes, which is both the strength and the fragility of the approach.
Wallet and chain access Mask ships an unhosted, open-source multi-chain wallet covering a wide range of EVM networks, with asset aggregation and swap routing, so a user can act on a token mentioned in a post without opening a separate application.
Smart-contract account features SmartPay provides a contract-based wallet flow that can, in supported contexts, sponsor or abstract transaction costs, lowering the barrier for users without a funded gas balance.
MASK carries voting weight in MaskDAO on proposals covering treasury use, ecosystem grants, and product direction. It is used in staking programs that distribute partner tokens and points, can settle gas in specific SmartPay contexts, and gates access and incentives across ecosystem campaigns.
On supply mechanics, MASK was created with a fixed genesis issuance of 100,000,000 tokens and no function to mint more, allocated across community, investor, team, and ecosystem buckets on a release schedule spread over roughly six years from launch. Consult the project's own tokenomics documentation for current details.
The canonical Ethereum contract is 0x69af81e73a73b40adf4f3d4223cd9b1ece623074. MASK is also deployed on BNB Chain, Polygon, and Energi, each with a different contract address.
Most Web3 social projects ask users to migrate to a new network and rebuild an audience there. Mask takes the opposite bet: leave the audience where it already is and add the missing capabilities on top. The encrypted post feature is the purest expression of that idea, giving a user confidentiality on a platform whose business model depends on reading content, without asking anyone to leave. The Initial Twitter Offering was similarly unusual: rather than describing the product, the token sale ran through it.
Mask is a client and protocol layer, not a chain, which changes the comparison set. Lens and Farcaster build new, protocol-native social graphs, whereas Mask owns no social graph and overlays features on graphs owned by others. Decentralized Social (DeSo) runs a dedicated blockchain for social data, while Mask stores nothing on a purpose-built chain. RSS3 indexes open social and on-chain activity as a data layer, and Mask displays that kind of data at the point of use.
Encryption happens on the user's own machine, and private keys stay in the local extension rather than on a Mask server, so the trust model is closer to a self-custody wallet than a hosted service. The codebase is open source, which allows independent review. Beyond that, security depends on the correctness of Mask's smart contracts on each supported chain, on the integrity of the extension distribution channel, and on the user's browser hygiene, since a malicious extension or compromised browser profile defeats client-side cryptography.
Mask has argued since 2019 that privacy and ownership can be added to existing social platforms rather than requiring their replacement. That position carries real fragility, but it is one of the few approaches that meets ordinary users where they already spend their attention, and it produced durable infrastructure in decentralized identity resolution that outlived the original extension framing.
MASK is listed on major centralized exchanges and trades on decentralized exchanges across the chains where it is deployed. Because the same ticker exists on several networks, confirm both the exchange's withdrawal network and the destination contract address before transferring.
MASK is commonly available on:
Typical pairs include MASK/USDT and MASK/BTC where supported.
MASK can be held on an exchange (custodial), in the Mask extension's own multi-chain wallet, in any EVM self-custody wallet using the correct contract address for that chain, or on a hardware wallet paired with an EVM interface. To participate in staking or governance, hold MASK in a self-custody wallet you can connect to the official interfaces.
