AirSwap is a peer-to-peer token trading network: instead of swapping against a liquidity pool, a trader gets a signed quote from a specific counterparty and the two settle directly onchain in one atomic transaction. AST is the token that lets holders stake, vote on protocol proposals and share in protocol fees. AirSwap matters because it is one of the longest-running decentralized trading protocols, launched in 2017, and because its request-for-quote (RFQ) model gives fixed prices with no slippage, a different trade-off from automated market makers.
AirSwap describes itself as a trustless OTC and RFQ token trading network. Pricing is negotiated off-chain between peers, and settlement happens onchain through smart contracts. Swaps are secured by cryptographic signatures from both parties and only execute if both token transfers succeed, so neither side has to trust the other or deposit funds with an intermediary. The official site lists deployments on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Linea and Avalanche (airswap.xyz).
AST is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum (contract 0x27054b13b1b798b345b591a4d22e6562d47ea75a, on Etherscan).
AirSwap was created by Michael Oved and Don Mosites. After the Swap protocol whitepaper was published in 2017, their company Fluidity partnered with ConsenSys, and AirSwap launched on October 10, 2017, the same date the project's documentation gives for the AST launch (Decrypt, AirSwap docs). Decrypt reports a total AST supply of 500 million, with 150 million sold in the initial token sale.
In 2021 AirSwap moved to a DAO model, where AST holders stake and vote on AirSwap Improvement Proposals (AIPs). The documentation also notes that AirSwap was a founding member of the Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) initiative.
AirSwap defines a small set of protocols for peers (protocol docs):
Request for Quote (RFQ) A client asks a market maker's server for a price and receives a signed order. The client can specify either the amount it will send or the amount it wants to receive.
Last Look (Indicative) The client subscribes to streaming prices for token pairs, then submits an order that the server can accept or reject. In this mode the client signs and the server sends.
Discovery and settlement Market makers register their servers in an onchain registry so clients can find them. Orders carry a protocol fee in basis points and settle through the Swap contracts, which perform the atomic exchange.
The open-source contracts in the airswap-protocols repository include Registry, Swap, SwapERC20, Wrapper (for native tokens), Staking, Pool (member rewards) and Batch-Call, released under the MIT license.
According to AirSwap's documentation, AST started as a way for traders to signal availability and now functions mainly as a governance and contribution token. Holders stake AST to become members; the FAQ describes staking as vesting over 20 weeks with a 4-week initial cliff. Members vote on proposals and earn points based on the amount staked. Protocol fees are routed to a contributor tips pool and a voter rewards pool, and points are used to claim a share of the rewards pool through a published formula (earning docs). Parameters such as staking terms can change through governance, so check current docs.
AirSwap was built around peer-to-peer RFQ trading from the start rather than pooled liquidity. Because a quote is a firm signed order, the trader knows the exact execution price and is not exposed to slippage within the pool. The protocol does not take custody of funds, and there is no escrow or deposit step.
AirSwap is a protocol, not a chain. Compared with AMM exchanges such as Uniswap, where prices come from a pool curve, AirSwap prices come from market makers who quote directly. It is closer in spirit to RFQ systems used by aggregators like 0x and 1inch, and to intent-based settlement in CoW Protocol, but AirSwap keeps the peer-to-peer model as its core design and routes fees to staked AST holders who vote.
Trades are enforced by smart contracts: a swap only completes if both transfers succeed, and orders require valid signatures. Users keep custody until settlement. The security of each deployment also depends on the underlying chain (Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Linea or Avalanche). The docs pages opened for this article did not list audit reports; check the official repository for current audit information.
AirSwap is one of the earliest working examples of non-custodial peer-to-peer trading on Ethereum and helped establish the RFQ model now common across DeFi. For AST holders, its value proposition rests on governance participation and a share of protocol fees.

AST is an ERC-20 token and can be held in any Ethereum-compatible self-custody wallet, such as MetaMask or a hardware wallet. Staking is done through the AirSwap member dashboard.
