Bancor is one of the oldest decentralized trading projects still shipping code. It introduced the automated market maker to public blockchains in 2017 and has since rebuilt itself twice. Today "Bancor" refers to a family of on-chain trading protocols governed by the Bancor DAO, of which the flagship is Carbon DeFi, an order-based trading protocol rather than a classic liquidity pool.
BNT is the Bancor Network Token. It is the governance and value-accrual asset of the ecosystem: staking BNT mints vBNT, the token used to vote in the DAO, and the DAO has directed protocol fees toward buying and burning BNT.
Official sources:
Bancor was created by Guy Benartzi, Galia Benartzi, Eyal Hertzog, and Yudi Levi under the Bprotocol Foundation, and its token sale in June 2017 was among the largest of that era. The original whitepaper described "smart tokens" holding reserves on a bonding curve, the direct ancestor of every constant-function market maker that followed.
The later history is less comfortable and needs stating plainly. Bancor v2.1 introduced single-sided liquidity provision, where a depositor supplies one asset and the protocol mints BNT to match it, together with impermanent loss protection funded by protocol emissions, and version 3 made that protection instant. On June 19, 2022, during severe market stress, the protection was paused. Liquidity providers who had relied on it were left exposed, the protocol carried a substantial deficit, and a class action followed in the United States.
Development has since moved to Carbon DeFi, launched in 2023, and the DAO has voted to wind the legacy pools down progressively, migrating recovered value into Carbon strategies and burning BNT. Anyone evaluating BNT should read that sequence as the actual record: the impermanent loss guarantee is not active, and the legacy automated market maker is in managed decline.
The current stack has three parts.
Carbon DeFi, the trading protocol A Carbon position is not a single pool share. Each strategy holds two independent bonding curves, one for buying and one for selling, and the maker sets the price range for each. Liquidity rotates between the two curves: when the buy order fills, the acquired tokens move to the sell curve, and vice versa. A maker can therefore express "buy this asset between these prices, sell it between those prices" and have it execute repeatedly without external keepers or oracles.
Order behavior Orders are unidirectional and irreversible once executed, which is the property that makes Carbon resistant to sandwich attacks: a filled order does not reverse when the price moves back. Strategies are adjustable on-chain by changing parameters rather than withdrawing and re-depositing, which keeps gas costs down.
Fee routing and BNT Trading fees are protocol-owned and their allocation is decided by DAO governance. The CarbonVortex contract aggregates fees from Carbon, from the Arb Fast Lane arbitrage protocol, and from surplus in the legacy Bancor pools, then runs a permissionless Dutch auction to consolidate that mixed bag of tokens into a single asset, typically the chain's native gas token. A companion bridge contract moves collected fees from other networks back to Ethereum, and the DAO has approved directing Carbon fee revenue into BNT buy-and-burn.
BNT is used for:
An important structural point: BNT has an elastic supply. The protocol is able to mint and burn BNT rather than working from a fixed issuance schedule, so BNT is not capped by a hard protocol limit in the way a fixed-supply token is. That elasticity is exactly what funded the single-sided liquidity model, and it is also what made the 2022 deficit possible.
Two things stand out. The first is Carbon's asymmetric liquidity: giving one position two separate curves lets a maker set an arbitrary spread and run a grid or scalping strategy entirely on-chain, without a keeper bot or a price oracle. Conventional automated market makers force a single curve and a fixed protocol fee on every provider. The second is irreversibility. In a standard pool a filled trade can be undone by the next trade at a similar price, which is the mechanical basis of sandwich extraction; Carbon orders do not reverse, removing that attack surface.
Against Uniswap and other concentrated liquidity designs, Carbon looks superficially similar because both let a provider choose price ranges. The difference is that a concentrated liquidity position still uses one curve for both directions and one protocol-set fee tier, while Carbon splits the two directions into independent orders with a maker-defined spread.
Against on-chain limit order books, Carbon does not need off-chain relayers or keepers to fill orders, because takers interact with the curves directly. Against Curve or Balancer, which optimize for pool composition and swap efficiency, Bancor's current focus is strategy expression for individual makers rather than deep shared pools.
Against its own past, the contrast matters most: Bancor no longer offers the single-sided, loss-protected deposit product it was known for between 2021 and 2022.
Security rests on:
Bancor invented the mechanism that most of decentralized finance now runs on, then had to live through the consequences of an over-promised product. Both halves are instructive. Carbon DeFi is a genuinely different take on on-chain liquidity, with a maker-defined spread and MEV-resistant execution, deployed across roughly a dozen EVM networks including Ethereum, Base, Linea, Mantle, Sei, Celo, Fantom, Blast, Telos, IOTA, Coti, and TAC. Whether that design wins share is open, but it is a real technical contribution rather than a rebrand.
BNT is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and is available on both centralized exchanges and decentralized venues. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction. The token contract can be inspected on Etherscan.
BNT is often available on:
Common pairs include BNT/USDT and BNT/ETH where supported.
After purchase, BNT can be held on an exchange, which is custodial, in any Ethereum-compatible non-custodial wallet such as MetaMask or Rabby, or in a hardware wallet paired with wallet software, which is safer for long-term holdings.
Confirm the network and the token contract before transferring, and note that vBNT is a separate token from BNT and is not interchangeable with it.
