district0x is a network of decentralized marketplaces and communities, called "districts", built on Ethereum, Aragon and IPFS. DNT is its ERC-20 token, used to apply to the network, to vote on which districts are admitted, to signal support for proposals, and to stake for governance rights inside individual districts. It matters as one of the earliest attempts, dating from 2017, to turn marketplaces such as a freelance job board and an ENS name market into user-governed Ethereum applications.
The district0x website describes the project as "a network of decentralized marketplaces and communities" where users can "create, operate and govern." Districts are "decentralized applications, marketplaces and communities that exist as non-custodial, censorship-resistant dapps."
Each district is built on a shared open-source framework called d0xINFRA, a set of Ethereum smart contracts and front-end libraries. According to the whitepaper, d0xINFRA gives districts the basic functions an online market needs: posting listings, searching and filtering them, ranking peers and building reputation, and sending invoices and collecting payments. Districts can add features through auxiliary modules.
The whitepaper (v0.3, dated 14 September 2017) lists Matus Lestan (co-founder, tech lead, who built Ethlance) and Joe Urgo (co-founder, strategy and operations lead) as the founders, supported by a small Clojure and ClojureScript team. The legal entity named in the whitepaper is District0x Ltd.

District0x combines three layers:
Admission to the network runs through the District Registry, a token-curated list. An applicant deposits DNT (the whitepaper's initial parameter was 1,000 DNT) with a proposal. If nobody challenges it during the challenge period (about one week initially), it is admitted. If someone challenges with a matching deposit, DNT holders vote using a commit-reveal scheme. The losing side's deposit is forfeited and partly paid to voters on the winning side, while voters get their tokens back whatever the outcome.
The whitepaper calls DNT a "multi-utility" ERC-20 token. It is:

The genesis contract minted 1,000,000,000 DNT: 600,000,000 to Contribution Period v0.1 participants, 140,000,000 and 40,000,000 reserved for possible later contribution periods, 200,000,000 to founders and 15,000,000 to advisors (both vesting over 24 months with a 6-month cliff), and 5,000,000 to early contributors. DNT is on Ethereum at 0x0abdace70d3790235af448c88547603b945604ea, with a bridged version on Energi.
Most Ethereum dapps are single applications. district0x instead offers a template for launching many governed marketplaces on shared infrastructure, sometimes likened to WordPress templates for dapps. Its combination of a token-curated registry for admission with per-district Aragon governance funded by staked DNT was an early design for community-owned marketplaces.
district0x is an application network on Ethereum, not a blockchain. It relies on Aragon-style DAO governance rather than building its own. Compared with Ethereum Name Service, which runs the naming system itself, Name Bazaar is a marketplace for trading those names. Compared with prediction or curation protocols such as Augur, district0x uses token voting to curate which marketplaces join, not to resolve outcomes.
District contracts run on Ethereum and inherit its proof-of-stake security. Registry integrity depends on economic incentives: applicants and challengers put DNT at risk, and token holders vote. The whitepaper promised a public multisig for contributions and transparency reporting. Specific third-party audit reports for the district contracts were not found in the documents reviewed; check the district0x GitHub for current code.
district0x was an early, concrete test of whether marketplaces could be owned and governed by their users on Ethereum. Ethlance has run since January 2017, and the registry and staking design influenced later token-curated and DAO-governed systems.
