Initia is a Layer 1 blockchain built with the Cosmos SDK that exists mainly to host tightly connected application-specific rollups, which it calls Minitias. Instead of asking teams to assemble their own data availability, bridging, oracle, and wallet stack, Initia ships an opinionated set of those choices and connects every rollup back to the same base layer.
INIT is the native asset. It pays gas on the L1, secures the chain through staking, and drives governance. The design goal Initia states plainly in its own documentation is reducing decision fatigue for rollup teams, which is a more honest framing than most modular chains use.
Initia mainnet is live. A direct read of the public node at the time of writing returns the chain id interwoven-1 running initiad v1.4.8, with block height past 21.7 million, so this is a network producing blocks rather than a testnet or a pre-launch promise.
Official sources:
Initia is built by Initia Labs, a team with roots in the Cosmos and Move ecosystems. The project raised venture funding before launch, ran an extended testnet campaign, and launched mainnet on April 24 2025, following the deployment of its MiniEVM and MiniMove rollup frameworks, its native DEX, and the incentive program it calls VIP.
Public attribution for individual founders is thinner than for most L1s of comparable size, and the project presents itself through Initia Labs rather than named founders. Where a fact is not published, it is better to say so than to guess.
Cosmos SDK base layer with a Move execution environment
Initia is a Cosmos SDK chain using CometBFT-style Proof-of-Stake consensus, but its L1 smart contract layer runs the Move virtual machine. A live read of the chain's Move module parameters confirms this is enabled in production, with uinit as the base denomination and scripts enabled.
Enshrined Liquidity instead of plain staking This is the most distinctive part of the design. On an ordinary Cosmos chain, capital must choose between securing the network and providing liquidity. On Initia, governance-whitelisted InitiaDEX liquidity positions that pair INIT with another asset can be bonded to validators alongside native INIT. A single position can therefore earn staking rewards and trading fees at the same time, and the chain's security budget and its liquidity depth stop competing with each other.
OPinit rollup framework Minitias are optimistic rollups built on OPinit, a virtual-machine-agnostic framework whose components include an executor that produces blocks and output roots, a challenger that watches for invalid output, and a bridge that moves assets in and out. Teams pick their execution layer from MiniEVM, MiniMove, or MiniWasm rather than porting to whatever the base chain uses.
VIP incentives The Vested Interest Program routes a scheduled share of INIT emissions to rollups and their users based on gauge voting and scoring, with rewards vesting against performance over multiple stages instead of being paid out immediately. It is Initia's answer to the problem of new rollups launching with no users and no liquidity.
interwoven-1, gas denominated in uinituinitINIT has a documented fixed total supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens, and this is one of the cases where the chain state agrees with the marketing. A live query of the bank module returns exactly 1,000,000,000,000,000 uinit, which is 1,000,000,000 INIT at six decimals, and the standard Cosmos inflation endpoint returns "not implemented" on this chain, consistent with scheduled release from fixed allocations rather than open-ended PoS inflation. Published allocations are 25 percent to Enshrined Liquidity and staking, 25 percent to VIP rewards, 15.25 percent to protocol sales, 15 percent to protocol developers, 7.75 percent to the foundation, 6 percent to an exchange launch campaign, 5 percent to airdrop, and 1 percent to a community sale.
The honest way to describe the tradeoff: Initia is betting that coordinated, opinionated infrastructure beats maximum flexibility for most teams. That is a reasonable bet, and also the thing that would hurt most if the shared components ever become a bottleneck. Because gas, staking, VIP rewards, and DEX pairs are all denominated in INIT, activity on any connected rollup routes demand back to the same asset.
Initia uses delegated Proof-of-Stake with CometBFT consensus. Live chain parameters show a bonded denomination of uinit, a 21-day unbonding period, and an active validator set capped at 20, which is small and concentrates consensus among relatively few operators. Governance parameters show a 7-day voting period, a quorum of 33.4 percent, a pass threshold of 50 percent, a veto threshold of 33.4 percent, and a minimum deposit of 10,000 INIT.
Rollups built on OPinit rely on optimistic security: an executor posts output, a challenger can dispute it within the challenge window, and safety depends on at least one honest, funded, and online challenger. This is the same assumption optimistic rollups elsewhere carry, and it deserves the same scrutiny.
Initia is one of the clearer attempts at a real problem: application chains are easy to launch and very hard to bootstrap. By standardizing infrastructure choices, making liquidity count toward security, and vesting incentives against sustained performance, it tries to make the tenth rollup in an ecosystem more valuable than the first rather than less. Whether that holds up is open, but the design is specific and testable, which is more than can be said for many modular blockchain pitches.
INIT is listed on major centralized exchanges and is also tradable on InitiaDEX within its own ecosystem. Availability, pairs, and any regional restrictions depend on the venue.
INIT is commonly available on:
interwoven-1If you intend to stake or use Enshrined Liquidity, use a wallet that supports the chain natively rather than a generic interface, and confirm the chain id before signing.
