Status is an open-source, privacy-first crypto super app: a pseudonymous messenger, a multichain self-custody wallet, token-gated communities, and a Web3 browser in one application. It is built so that using it requires no phone number and no email address, and so that messages travel over a peer-to-peer network rather than through company servers.
SNT is the project's Ethereum ERC-20 token. It is used to help govern, access, and power Status applications and networks, including voting on which communities appear in the Status community directory, upvoting the initiatives contributors should work on, and locking tokens to register an ENS subdomain username.
Official sources:
Status was co-founded by Jarrad Hope and Carl Bennetts, who publicly presented the idea of an Ethereum light client on a smartphone at DevCon2 in September 2016. The token sale followed in June 2017 and is one of the better-known events of that era: it was planned to run for weeks, hit its cap within hours, and distributed SNT at a rate of 10,000 tokens per ETH contributed. The total supply set at that time, 6,804,870,174 SNT, is fixed, and the contract has issued no more since.
The organization around the project has changed shape considerably. Much of the underlying technology was spun into a portfolio of independent open-source efforts under the Institute of Free Technology, which supports Status alongside Waku, Nimbus, Codex, Keycard, Logos, and Nomos. That structure explains why Status documentation frequently refers to sibling projects: they are separately maintained but built for the same stack.
The most important recent development concerns Status Network, the gasless Ethereum Layer 2 the team had been building. On April 30, 2026, the project announced that Status Network would not launch as a standalone Layer 2. Instead its production-ready gasless and privacy rollup technology is being merged into the Linea ecosystem, making gasless execution a native capability available to any rollup using the Linea stack. Pre-deposit vault participants receive principal plus accrued yield plus a reward pool of 20 million SNT and 20 million LINEA, distributed on Linea mainnet with no migration fee, and the codebase remains open source. The Status app becomes the team's primary focus.
Anyone reading older material should treat descriptions of Status as "a mobile operating system for Ethereum," or of Status Network as an upcoming independent Layer 2, as historical rather than current.
Status is best understood as a stack of independent pieces rather than a single monolithic app.
Messaging without servers Chat runs over Waku, a peer-to-peer messaging protocol built for end-to-end encryption, metadata privacy, and censorship resistance. Messages are relayed through a distributed set of nodes, so there is no central inbox to subpoena, block, or breach.
Identity without accounts A Status identity is a keypair, not a registration. There is no phone number or email tied to it. Optionally, a user can lock SNT to claim a human-readable ENS subdomain, so that others see a name instead of a long address.
Wallet and browser The wallet sends, swaps, and bridges across multiple chains, holds collectibles, and supports on-ramps. The in-app browser and a separate portfolio extension let the same keys reach dApps.
Communities Communities are token-gated group chats designed with crypto native from the start, and SNT holders help curate which of them surface in the public directory.
Hardware Keycard is a contactless hardware wallet from the same ecosystem, used to keep signing keys off the phone.
The named pieces most relevant to a reader:
SNT is described by the project as an ERC-20 token that helps govern, access, and power Status applications, services, and peer-to-peer networks. Its documented uses are:
Total supply is fixed at 6,804,870,174 SNT and the token is not inflationary. Status describes the community as continuously considering new uses for the token, which is an honest way of saying the utility set has evolved and may keep evolving.
Status is unusual in that its privacy claims are structural rather than promised. Chat does not run on company servers, an account is not tied to a phone number, and the client is open source and reproducible by anyone who wants to check. Very few consumer crypto apps combine private messaging, self-custody, and dApp access in one place at all, and fewer still do it without an account system.
The second distinguishing trait is institutional. Status has kept shipping through multiple market cycles since 2017, has funded a research ecosystem around itself, and has repeatedly given technology away rather than fenced it in, most recently by merging its gasless rollup work into Linea instead of launching a competing chain.
Security comes from several separate layers. Keys are held by the user, not by Status, and can be moved onto a Keycard hardware device so that signing happens off the phone. Messaging is end-to-end encrypted and routed over Waku, so confidentiality does not depend on trusting a server operator, and the design specifically targets metadata privacy rather than only message contents. The client is open source, so its claims can be independently reviewed.
The SNT contract itself is a long-standing Ethereum ERC-20 deployed in 2017 with a fixed supply, which means the token layer carries no ongoing minting authority to worry about.
Status is one of the longest-running attempts to make crypto usable without giving up either custody or privacy, and it has kept building through periods when neither was fashionable. Its research output, especially Waku and the gasless execution work now heading into the Linea stack, has value beyond the app itself. For readers evaluating SNT, the honest framing is that the app and the ecosystem have real substance, while the token's role is narrower than the project's ambitions and has changed with them.
