Zora is an onchain social network and creator protocol where posts and profiles become tradable tokens. When someone posts on Zora, the post is deployed as an ERC-20 coin with its own liquidity pool, so anyone can buy or sell exposure to that piece of content and the creator earns a cut of every trade. ZORA is the ecosystem token that sits underneath this system on Base.
Two things are commonly confused. Zora Network is an Ethereum layer 2 built on the OP Stack that Zora launched in 2023 for cheap NFT minting. A live eth_chainId call to the public Zora RPC returns 0x76adf1, chain ID 7777777, confirming the network is still running. The ZORA token, however, launched separately in 2025 on Base. Reading the token contract at 0x1111111111166b7fe7bd91427724b487980afc69 on Base returns the name "Zora", symbol "ZORA", 18 decimals and a fixed total supply of 10,000,000,000 tokens.
Official sources:
Zora was founded in May 2020 by Jacob Horne, Dee Goens and Tyson Battistella, all three of whom previously worked at Coinbase. It began as an NFT marketplace protocol built around a permissionless auction and creator royalty design, and grew into a widely used minting stack for onchain media.
Zora Network launched in 2023 as an OP Stack rollup and joined the Optimism Superchain. In spring 2025 the team launched the ZORA token on Base with a total supply of 10 billion and an airdrop to creators, collectors and developers. The launch was contentious: Zora described ZORA explicitly as being "for fun" and stated that it does not entitle holders to governance rights or any equity claim, which drew criticism from people who expected a conventional protocol token.
The most important change since then is product, not token. In 2025 Zora rebuilt around the Coins Protocol, where every post is a coin, and the launch of the Base App in mid-2025 pushed large volumes of coin creation through Zora's contracts.
Coins instead of posts Each item on Zora is an ERC-20 coin with a fixed supply of 1,000,000,000 units. There are two kinds. A Creator Coin is a profile-level token where the username becomes the ticker. A Content Coin is a post-level token, backed by that creator's own coin.
Instant markets through Uniswap V4 Every coin is deployed with a Uniswap V4 pool and a custom hook. Each coin has a backing currency, so trading routes through a defined pair rather than needing a manual listing. The hook applies a sniper tax that starts near 99 percent and decays over roughly ten seconds after launch, which makes it costly to front-run a fresh coin.
Fees that route back to creators Trading carries a 1 percent fee split between the creator, the referrer, the protocol and liquidity providers. Zora's documentation describes converting those fees through multi-hop swaps so that rewards are paid out in ZORA, which is where the token gains real economic function inside the system.
Supply and vesting
Creator Coins allocate 500 million units to the liquidity pool and 500 million to the creator, vesting linearly over five years and claimed through a claimVesting call. Content Coins hand 10 million units to the creator immediately and place 990 million into the market with no vesting.
ZORA's documented roles are:
Zora's own tokenomics page states plainly that ZORA "is for fun only and does not entitle its holders to any governance rights or a claim on any equity ownership" in Zora or its products. That disclaimer has not been withdrawn and should be read alongside the reward-routing mechanics above. Zora Network itself uses ETH for gas, not ZORA, and being an optimistic rollup it has no validator staking for the token.
Supply was allocated across incentives, the airdrop, liquidity, treasury, team and investors. The airdrop, incentive and liquidity portions unlocked at launch. Treasury, team and investor allocations sit behind a six-month cliff and then release monthly, with the schedule running into 2029.
Zora collapsed the distance between publishing and market-making. On most platforms a creator posts and then separately tries to monetize. On Zora the act of posting is the act of issuing an asset with a live market, and the fee stream flows back automatically.
The second distinctive choice is the backing-currency hierarchy. Content Coins are backed by the creator's coin, and creator coins by ZORA, a layered structure where activity at the post level propagates value upward instead of fragmenting liquidity across thousands of unrelated pairs.
Zora Network is one of many OP Stack rollups and does not compete on raw throughput or novel consensus. Its differentiation is application-level. Compared with general purpose layer 2s such as Optimism or Arbitrum, Zora is opinionated about a single use case, onchain media, and ships the contracts, SDK and consumer app for it.
Compared with earlier social token experiments, Zora avoided bonding curves tied to individual reputation in favor of standard ERC-20 coins in Uniswap pools, which makes them composable with the rest of DeFi. Compared with NFT marketplaces, it replaced the one-of-one collectible model with fungible coins, trading scarcity for liquidity.
Zora Network is an optimistic rollup. Transactions execute on the layer 2, data is posted to Ethereum, and a challenge window allows fraudulent state to be disputed. The network inherits Ethereum's data availability and settlement guarantees while remaining subject to the standard rollup caveats around sequencer operation and upgrade keys that apply across the Superchain.
The Coins Protocol contracts live on Base, itself an OP Stack rollup settling to Ethereum. Coin markets are Uniswap V4 pools, so pricing and custody follow well-audited AMM mechanics rather than a custom exchange. The sniper tax hook is a launch protection, not a guarantee against manipulation.
Zora is one of the clearest attempts to answer a hard question: can creators be paid directly by the market for attention, without an advertising middleman? The mechanism is imperfect and often speculative, but it is a real, running system rather than a proposal. For anyone tracking onchain consumer applications, Zora is the reference implementation of the content-as-asset idea.
ZORA trades on centralized exchanges and on Base decentralized exchanges, notably Aerodrome and Uniswap. Because ZORA lives on Base, withdrawing from an exchange to Base is usually cheaper than routing through Ethereum mainnet. Verify the contract address before swapping.
Listings include Coinbase Exchange, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, Gate and KuCoin. Regional availability and pairs vary, so confirm on the exchange itself.
