Anoma is an intent-centric protocol that its team describes as a distributed operating system rather than a blockchain. The core idea is a shift in what a user submits. On a normal chain you send a transaction that spells out exactly which contract to call and in what order. On Anoma you sign an intent: a statement of the outcome you will accept, along with the constraints you require, and you leave the execution path to a separate class of participants called solvers.
XAN is the network's token. It launched on September 29, 2025 as an ERC-20 on Ethereum, and it is used for payments, fees, and governance while the wider Anoma rollout proceeds in phases. This is an important detail that summaries often blur: XAN is not currently the gas token of a standalone Anoma Layer 1. It is an Ethereum token today, and staking and solver-incentive roles described in project material are part of a phased rollout rather than live functionality.
Anoma is also frequently confused with Namada, a separate sovereign chain with its own token that came out of the same research lineage. They are related in origin, not the same asset.
Official sources:
Anoma originated at Heliax, a research and engineering group whose founders include Adrian Brink, Christopher Goes, and Awa Sun Yin, with backgrounds spanning Cosmos and Tendermint work and applied cryptography. The team has published research on intents, privacy, and heterogeneous interoperability since 2020, and Namada emerged from the same effort as a separate, earlier deployment focused on shielded transfers.
Development has been funded through venture rounds reported at more than sixty million dollars, with participants including Polychain Capital, CMCC Global, and Electric Capital. The XAN launch in late 2025 marked the transition from a long research phase into a staged mainnet rollout.
Users express intents An intent is effectively a partial transaction. It states a constraint on the state change the user is willing to accept, signed and submitted rather than executed. Because it is partial, it can be combined with other people's intents instead of standing alone.
Solvers do the matching Solvers read pending intents and search for combinations that satisfy several of them at once. This makes multi-party coordination a native operation. A three-way swap that no pairwise market could clear is an ordinary case here, not a special construction.
The Anoma Resource Machine settles it The ARM defines and enforces which state updates are valid. The project's own analogy is that the ARM plays a role for Anoma comparable to the EVM's role for Ethereum. It uses a resource model, where state is represented as resources with logic attached, and validity is checked against that logic rather than against imperative contract code.
Protocol adapters install the ARM onto existing chains
Rather than asking the world to migrate to a new Layer 1, Anoma ships the protocol adapter, a Solidity contract that brings the ARM to an EVM-compatible chain. The adapter went live on Ethereum mainnet on November 18, 2025 at 0x46E622226F93Ed52C584F3f66135CD06AF01c86c, and a direct read of Ethereum mainnet confirms deployed bytecode at that address. Deployments have also been reported on Arbitrum and other EVM networks.
XAN is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum at 0xcedbea37c8872c4171259cdfd5255cb8923cf8e7 with 18 decimals. A live read of that contract confirms the ticker, the decimal precision, and a genesis supply of exactly ten billion XAN.
Documented and stated roles:
Genesis allocation is documented as 25 percent to community, marketing, and liquidity, 19 percent to research, development, and ecosystem, 10 percent to the Anoma Foundation, 31 percent to backers, and 15 percent to core contributors. Outside the community portion, allocations carry a twelve-month lock followed by linear unlocking over the next thirty-six months. Supply is fixed at genesis with no documented inflation schedule.
The distinctive bet is that Anoma does not ask users to leave their existing chains. Most intent projects build a new chain or a new rollup and then need liquidity to migrate. Anoma packages its validity machine as a contract that can be installed on a chain that already has liquidity, which means intents, programmable privacy, and cross-chain settlement can appear on Ethereum without Ethereum changing anything.
The second distinguishing property is that multi-party coordination is a first-class primitive. Counterparty discovery, batch clearing, and privacy are handled at the protocol layer rather than bolted onto an application.
Against general-purpose Layer 1s such as Ethereum or Solana, the difference is the unit of user input. Those chains execute transactions you specify. Anoma solves for outcomes you declare, delegating the search for a valid path to a competitive solver market.
Against interoperability ecosystems such as Cosmos, where the answer to fragmentation is sovereign chains connected by a messaging standard, Anoma's answer is a portable validity machine installed onto chains that already exist. Cosmos moves messages between chains; Anoma tries to make the same intent settle across several of them.
Against dedicated intent and solver networks focused mainly on order flow routing, Anoma is considerably broader in scope and correspondingly less finished. Ambition and maturity are not the same thing, and an honest comparison acknowledges both.
Security today is layered and mostly inherited. XAN is an Ethereum ERC-20, so custody and transfers rely on Ethereum's proof-of-stake consensus. Where a protocol adapter is installed, applications running through it inherit that host chain's consensus and finality plus the correctness of the adapter contract itself.
The ARM enforces validity through resource logic checks rather than trusting solvers. A solver is expected to be self-interested, and the design goal is that a dishonest or incompetent one produces an invalid state update that simply fails, rather than a valid one that harms the user.
Governance is split deliberately. A voter body of token holders and a governance council can each propose upgrades and each check the other, with the council able to move when the voter body has not reached quorum and the voter body able to veto council proposals. Project material notes that some protocol adapters and applications have remained in a test phase pending audit, so security posture varies by deployment.
Anoma is one of the more serious attempts to answer a question the industry has not solved: how do you get intent-based, private, cross-chain applications without first convincing everyone to move to a new chain. The protocol adapter approach is a direct answer, and it is falsifiable in a way most architecture papers are not, because the adapter is either installed and used on real chains or it is not. Whether it works is still open: the ideas are well specified and publicly documented, the rollout is deliberately staged, and the research is further along than the deployment.
XAN trades on centralized exchanges and, as an ERC-20, on Ethereum decentralized exchanges. Listings and eligibility vary by jurisdiction and change over time.
XAN is often available on:
Common pairs include XAN/USDT where supported.
XAN is a standard Ethereum ERC-20, so storage is straightforward:
Governance runs through the official Anoma Portal with an Ethereum wallet. Confirm the token contract address before adding XAN manually, and confirm you are on Ethereum mainnet rather than a testnet or an unrelated network before sending funds.
