Swarm is a peer-to-peer network of nodes that together provide decentralized storage and communication, and BZZ is the token that pays for it. Anyone uploading data buys "postage stamps" with the token, and the nodes that actually store and relay that data earn it back. That makes Swarm one of the few storage networks built specifically around the Ethereum ecosystem, aimed at hosting files, websites and application data that no single company can take down.
The project describes itself as censorship-resistant storage and communication infrastructure for Web3. In practice it is a network of nodes running Bee, the reference client written in Go, that split uploaded data into small pieces, spread those pieces across the network and serve them back on request. According to the official documentation, Swarm's incentive system is enforced through smart contracts on Gnosis Chain and powered by xBZZ, the form of the BZZ token used on that chain. The original BZZ token is an ERC-20 on Ethereum.
Swarm is stewarded by the Swarm Foundation, which publishes the Bee client, the documentation and research papers such as The Book of Swarm and the original whitepaper.
In a May 2024 article, the Swarm Foundation blog marked ten years since the idea of Swarm was first formulated, placing its conceptual origins in the early Ethereum era. The same blog records that on 13 September 2022 the foundation began what it called the most substantial upgrade to the network since its mainnet release: the rollout of storage incentives. The foundation later reported that the BZZ bonding curve, which had let users buy and redeem BZZ against a reserve, was shut down following a community vote. Individual founders are not prominently named on the current official site; the Swarm Foundation acts as the public steward.
Paying for storage. Uploading requires buying postage stamp batches with xBZZ. The docs compare this to prepaying postage: the stamp proves the upload was paid for.
Storage rewards. The xBZZ collected from stamps is redistributed to storage nodes. Every 152 Gnosis Chain blocks one neighborhood is selected to play a "redistribution game", and one honest node in it wins a reward weighted by its stake.
Staking. Full nodes must stake at least 10 xBZZ to take part in storage incentives (20 xBZZ for a node doubling its reserve, per the docs).
Bandwidth payments. Under the Swarm Accounting Protocol (SWAP), nodes pay each other for relaying data with cheques drawn on a chequebook contract and settled in xBZZ. Only full nodes participate in SWAP.
Swarm pairs storage with communication primitives (feeds, PSS messaging, access control), which lets developers build complete applications rather than just archive files. Its storage economy is also self-adjusting: a price oracle raises postage stamp prices when data redundancy in the network falls and lowers them when capacity is plentiful, targeting a redundancy level of about four copies.
Swarm is not a blockchain itself; it is a storage and messaging layer whose accounting runs on Gnosis Chain. Filecoin uses storage deals and proofs on its own chain, Arweave charges one-time payments for permanent storage, and Storj runs a commercially operated, cloud-style service. Swarm instead uses time-limited postage stamps (data persists while stamps are funded) and puts more weight on censorship resistance, messaging and hosting content that changes.
Data availability comes from replication inside neighborhoods plus optional erasure coding. Honest storage is enforced economically: in each redistribution round, nodes in the selected neighborhood commit to and then reveal what they store, and only nodes whose claims match their peers can win, so the docs describe honestly storing assigned data as the most profitable strategy. Stake requirements add a cost to misbehaving, and payments and stake are handled by smart contracts on Gnosis Chain.
Most Web3 applications still rely on centralized servers for their front ends and data. Swarm offers a way to keep that layer decentralized, with an incentive design that pays nodes for storage and bandwidth instead of relying on goodwill.
BZZ trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum, and xBZZ is available on Gnosis Chain DEXs. Node operators need xBZZ specifically, so check the official node funding guide before buying.
Listings change over time, so confirm that an exchange supports BZZ, and the network you intend to use, before depositing.
BZZ on Ethereum can be held in any ERC-20 wallet, such as MetaMask or a hardware wallet. xBZZ on Gnosis Chain needs a wallet configured for that network. Always verify the contract address on Etherscan or Gnosisscan.
