edgeX is a decentralized derivatives exchange that runs a central limit order book for perpetual futures and settles to Ethereum, so traders keep custody of their collateral. It also lists equity and commodity perpetuals and spot markets. It is built on EDGE Stack, an application-specific execution layer designed around the trading lifecycle. EDGE is the native token, used for governance and delegated staking.

The individuals behind edgeX are not publicly identified in its own documentation or whitepaper; the technical paper is published under the entity name EDGEX DAO INC. In February 2026, Circle Ventures announced a strategic investment alongside plans to bring native USDC and Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol to the EDGE Chain. The architecture has passed through two generations: version 1 on StarkWare's StarkEx, and version 2 as a modular rollup.
Orders are matched off-chain by a high-performance engine, and the resulting state is committed back to Ethereum, the source of its security guarantees. In version 1, trades were proved with STARK proofs then checked by an on-chain verifier. Version 2 is a modular rollup separating execution from settlement, and the documentation states candidly that it temporarily uses the Arbitrum stack as a transitional layer. Mark and liquidation prices come from the oracle provider Stork.
EDGE is the native asset and governance token. Holders vote on edgeX Improvement Proposals covering fee structures, asset listings and security upgrades, and can stake through a delegated validator system that shares protocol rewards. Total supply is 1,000,000,000: 30 percent early users, 5 percent liquidity, 5 percent ecosystem, 5 percent foundation, 30 percent future reserve and 25 percent core contributors, with the reserve locked 18 months and contributor tokens 24, each then vesting over 24 months.
Most on-chain derivatives venues either accept the latency of a general-purpose chain or move matching off-chain with little verifiability. edgeX's stated approach is deterministic parallel execution, so any party running a watcher node can replay the transaction batches published to the data availability layer and must arrive at an identical state root, making a mismatch evidence of sequencer misbehavior.
Hyperliquid runs its own Layer 1, dYdX migrated to a purpose-built Cosmos application chain, and GMX uses a pool and oracle model rather than an order book. edgeX keeps a central limit order book but anchors settlement to Ethereum through a rollup instead of bootstrapping an independent validator set.
Assets sit in Ethereum smart contracts rather than operator accounts, so withdrawals are governed by contract logic. State roots go to a settlement layer and compressed transaction inputs to a data availability layer, so anyone can reconstruct state. The documentation publishes audits from Rigsec and SlowMist alongside PeckShield's audit of the StarkEx contracts used in version 1.
Sequencing is centralized, and the documentation frames fraud proofs as a basis for accountability rather than a live mechanism. Leverage carries liquidation risk, and equity-linked perpetuals bring regulatory uncertainty. The reserve and contributor allocations are 55 percent of supply on multi-year unlocks, and founding principals are not publicly named.
The gap between centralized execution quality and on-chain settlement guarantees is the main reason derivatives volume stayed on centralized venues. edgeX makes the execution layer itself the specialized component, and its move into equity and commodity perpetuals tests whether a self-custodied venue can serve more than crypto.
EDGE is an ERC-20 on Ethereum, so it can be acquired through Ethereum decentralized exchanges using the contract address published in the documentation, and through centralized exchanges that have listed it. Verify that address against the official documentation.
Any Ethereum wallet supporting ERC-20 tokens can hold EDGE once the contract address is added, including hardware devices such as Ledger. Collateral held inside the platform is a distinct position from tokens in a self-custodied wallet.
