Its documentation describes it as "a cutting-edge AMM DEX designed for MOVE-based blockchains" that combines a concentrated liquidity market maker with a second, bin-based market maker design. It runs two distinct AMM engines side by side rather than one, which is the main thing that separates it from most Sui DEXs. MAGMA is the protocol's native token, used for governance, liquidity incentives and access.

The team behind Magma Finance is not publicly identified in the project's own documentation. The GitBook contains no team page, no founder names and no company disclosure, and the website does not name individuals either. Third-party articles have circulated funding figures and launch dates, but those claims do not appear in Magma's official materials and are not repeated here.
What the documentation does state is a two-stage roadmap. The first stage, dated February 2025, was to "launch a fully functioned CLMM DEX on Sui" together with a thorough code audit. The second stage, dated July 2025, was the ALMM release. Both are reflected in the deployed contracts and audit reports the project publishes, which is a stronger form of evidence than a roadmap on its own.
Magma runs two market maker designs on the same protocol.
The CLMM is the familiar concentrated liquidity model. Rather than spreading capital evenly across every possible price, liquidity providers pick a price range. The docs put it plainly: "CLMMs allow LPs to allocate their funds to the price ranges where they believe most trading activity will occur." Positions are represented as transferable NFTs, and pools offer multiple fee tiers so that stable pairs and volatile pairs can be priced differently. Because liquidity is dense in the active range, traders see less slippage, and providers can construct limit-like and range orders out of one-sided positions.
The ALMM, or Adaptive Liquidity Market Maker, works differently. Liquidity is deposited into discrete bins, each representing a single price level, producing what the docs call a step-function liquidity curve that blends AMM automation with order-book-like precision. Within an active bin there is no slippage, since every unit trades at that bin's price. Fees are dynamic rather than fixed: a base fee derived from the pool's bin step and base factor, plus a variable component that rises with measured volatility such as the frequency of swaps and the number of bins crossed in a short window. Fees accrue per bin and are claimable by the providers who supplied that specific bin.
The protocol is permissionless. Anyone can create a pool for any asset, and other applications can route through Magma liquidity without approval.

Governance is the first. The docs state that MAGMA "serves as the native governance token, allowing holders to propose and vote on governance proposals to determine future features, upgrades, and/or parameters of the protocol." Incentives are the second: the token rewards liquidity providers who stake assets into market-making pools as compensation for opportunity cost. Access is the third, described as a "digital loyalty membership" that grants participants access to selected products or services.
Magma's broader documentation talks about a sustainable liquidity incentive engine that aligns traders, governance participants and liquidity providers, which is the language usually associated with vote-escrow designs. Vote-escrowed MAGMA is commonly described in outside coverage, but the official token page does not currently document lock durations, gauge weights, rebases or fee routing. Treat the specific escrow mechanics as unconfirmed until the protocol documents them.
The clearest differentiator is running CLMM and ALMM together. Most DEXs commit to one liquidity shape. Magma lets a pair use ranges where ranges suit it and discrete bins where they do not, and its docs claim the ALMM as the first of its kind on Sui.
The dynamic fee mechanism is the second. Because the variable fee rises with volatility, providers are compensated more during the periods when impermanent loss is worst, and the docs note the same mechanism acts as surge pricing that makes sniping a freshly launched pool more expensive. Fixed-fee AMMs cannot do either.
Within Sui, Cetus Protocol is the established concentrated liquidity venue, and DeepBook Protocol takes a different route entirely as a shared central limit order book that other applications build on top of. Magma sits between them: an AMM like Cetus, but with a bin-based mode that approximates order-book precision without being an order book.
Compared with ve(3,3) style venues on other chains, such as Aerodrome Finance on Base, Magma's published token design is currently less specified. Aerodrome documents its lock, vote and bribe flow in detail. Magma documents governance, incentives and access, and leaves the escrow mechanics undescribed, which is a real difference for anyone evaluating the token rather than the exchange.
Magma publishes its audit history rather than only claiming one. The CLMM was reviewed by Zellic, with the report available in Zellic's public publications repository, and by MoveBit, whose final report is dated February 2025. ALMM audit reports are published in the project's own GitHub repository. Deployed package identifiers for both the CLMM and ALMM systems are listed in the documentation, so users can confirm they are interacting with the contracts the team claims to have audited.
The protocol also inherits Sui's object-centric execution model and the Move language's resource semantics, which make certain classes of asset duplication and reentrancy errors difficult to express. None of this eliminates risk. Audits are point-in-time reviews of specific code, and upgrades after an audit are not covered by it.
Sui's growth depends on having competitive trading infrastructure, and liquidity venues are where that competition is decided. Magma's contribution is putting a bin-based market maker alongside a conventional concentrated liquidity engine on the same chain, which gives Sui builders a design option that previously required moving to another ecosystem. Whether the dual-engine approach proves better than a single well-tuned CLMM is an open question, and Magma is one of the more direct tests of it.
MAGMA trades on Sui decentralized exchanges, including Magma's own pools, and is reachable through Sui routing aggregators. It has also been listed on a number of centralized exchanges.
Buying on-chain requires SUI for gas and a bridged or natively acquired asset to swap from. Verify the coin type against the one published in Magma's documentation and on the Sui explorer before swapping, since Move coin types can be imitated with similar names.
MAGMA is a Sui coin and is held in any Sui-compatible wallet. Magma's own guides cover setting up a Sui wallet and bridging assets to Sui mainnet, which is the practical starting point. Common options include the standard Sui wallet and other browser extensions that support the network.
For larger balances, use a hardware wallet that supports Sui so that signing keys stay offline. If you are also providing liquidity, remember that a CLMM position is itself an NFT held in your wallet, so losing access to the wallet means losing the position as well as the tokens. Back up recovery phrases offline and never enter them into a website.
