Momentum is a decentralized exchange and DeFi platform built on Sui. Its core product is a concentrated liquidity market maker, the same architectural family as Uniswap v3, where liquidity providers choose the price range their capital works in rather than spreading it across the whole curve. On top sits a vote-escrow incentive system, the ve(3,3) model, in which MMT holders lock tokens to direct where new emissions go and to claim trading fees from the pools they support.
MMT is the governance and incentive token of that system. It is a Sui coin, not an Ethereum ERC-20, with the on-chain type 0x35169bc93e1fddfcf3a82a9eae726d349689ed59e4b065369af8789fe59f8608::mmt::MMT and nine decimal places. A direct query against a Sui mainnet node confirms the symbol and decimals.
One caution up front. The ticker MMT is used by several unrelated projects across different chains. If you are looking up this asset, match the Sui coin type rather than the ticker.
Official sources:
Momentum came out of stealth on March 31, 2025 with a beta launch of its DEX on Sui. The team's earlier work is MSafe, a multi-signature treasury product for Move-based chains used by protocols across Sui, Aptos, Movement, and IOTA, so the group arrived with existing infrastructure and relationships in the Move ecosystem rather than starting from zero. The MMT token generation event took place on November 4, 2025 following a community offering. The project does not present itself around named individual founders in its public documentation, so attribution here is at the team level rather than to specific people.
Concentrated liquidity trading Liquidity providers allocate capital to a chosen price band instead of the whole curve. Inside that band the pool is far deeper than a constant-product pool of the same size, which tightens spreads and cuts slippage. The trade-off is that a provider whose range is exited stops earning fees and holds a lopsided position, so ranges need active management or an automated vault.
Locking MMT into veMMT Holders bond MMT for a chosen duration to receive veMMT, a non-transferable position. Longer locks carry proportionally more weight: the documented schedule grants 25 percent of maximum voting power and reward share at one year, 50 percent at two, 75 percent at three, and the full amount at the four-year maximum. An auto-extend option keeps a position at maximum lock until turned off.
Gauge voting directs emissions veMMT holders vote each period on which pools receive newly emitted MMT. This is the central mechanism of ve(3,3): emissions follow votes rather than a fixed team-set schedule, so liquidity can be steered toward the pairs the protocol most wants deep.
Fees and bribes flow to voters Voters receive the swap fees generated by the pools they voted for, plus any external incentives outside projects offer to attract votes. The documented intent is that fees and incentives route to participants rather than being retained by a protocol treasury.
Sui execution characteristics Programmable Transaction Blocks let a user bundle a swap, a liquidity add, a stake, and a claim into one atomic signed action, and Sui's object-centric parallel execution lets independent pools update simultaneously instead of contending for global state.
MMT launched with a genesis supply of one billion tokens on Sui. Its documented roles:
The project's own documentation states plainly that MMT does not represent ownership, income rights, or any security interest, and that its purpose is participation within the protocol.
On distribution, roughly 20.41 percent of supply unlocked at the token generation event, drawn entirely from public sale and community allocations, with no team or investor tokens unlocked at launch. Investor allocations unlock gradually over 48 months after a 12-month cliff, and team allocations are documented as fully locked for the first 48 months.
Momentum is not only a DEX. The same team runs treasury infrastructure that other Move-ecosystem protocols already depend on, a launchpad that feeds new assets into its own pools, and a liquid staking token that makes staked SUI usable as pool liquidity. Each product feeds the exchange, a more coherent flywheel than a standalone exchange typically has. The ve(3,3) implementation is also comparatively clean: emissions, swap fees, and external incentives all route to veMMT voters rather than to a protocol treasury cut, and the launch structure kept team and investor supply locked while community allocations unlocked.
Against Ethereum-based concentrated liquidity exchanges, the main differences come from Sui itself. Transaction bundling is a chain-level feature rather than a router contract, parallel execution means one busy pool does not slow another, and fees are low enough that active range management is practical for smaller positions.
Against other ve(3,3) exchanges elsewhere, Momentum's differentiator is the surrounding product stack and the launchpad pipeline that supplies new pairs. The mechanism itself is a well-established pattern, not an invention.
Against Sui-native competitors, Momentum contests the same liquidity and the same flow, and market share on a single chain can shift quickly. The roadmap points toward cross-chain assets via Wormhole, a compliance and identity layer for regulated assets, and eventually a perpetuals exchange, all stated plans rather than shipped products.
Momentum inherits base-layer security from Sui, which uses a delegated proof-of-stake system where SUI is staked to validators. Momentum does not run its own consensus.
Above that, security depends on Momentum's Move smart contracts. The documentation names OtterSec and Zellic as auditors of the xSUI contracts, references an audit report for MSafe, and states a commitment to continuing audits and monitoring. An audit reduces risk rather than eliminating it, and coverage should be checked per product rather than assumed across the whole stack. Sui's Move language helps structurally too: its object model and resource-oriented type system make certain classes of asset-handling bug harder to write than in less restrictive environments.
Sui needed a deep, credible liquidity venue to support the rest of its DeFi ecosystem, and Momentum has positioned itself as that venue. A chain without reliable exchange depth struggles to attract lending markets, stablecoins, structured products, or serious institutional flow, and a functioning CLMM is the piece everything else is built on. The wider claim, that Momentum becomes a trading layer for tokenized real-world assets, is a long-horizon thesis with regulatory dependencies well outside the team's control. The near-term case is simpler and more testable: it is one of the primary liquidity engines on Sui.
MMT trades on centralized exchanges and on Sui decentralized exchanges, including Momentum's own application. Buying on Sui requires a Sui wallet funded with SUI for gas. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction.

MMT can be held:
Bonding into veMMT requires self-custody and a connection to the Momentum application, and the position stays locked for the term you choose. Before withdrawing from an exchange, confirm the destination is a Sui address and that the asset is the Sui-native MMT coin type rather than a similarly named token on another network.
