Moonbirds is an Ethereum NFT brand that now has a fungible token, BIRB, issued on Solana. The NFT side is a fixed collection of 10,000 pixel-art owl profile pictures minted in April 2022; a live read of the collection contract at 0x23581767a106ae21c074b2276D25e5C3e136a68b returns the name "Moonbirds" and a total supply of 10,000, unchanged since mint. BIRB is a separate SPL token launched on January 28, 2026 by Orange Cap Games, the studio that now owns the Moonbirds intellectual property.
The two assets are related by brand rather than by contract. Holding BIRB does not give you an NFT, and holding a Moonbird does not give you a claim on the token beyond whatever distribution the studio chose to run. Anyone researching BIRB should treat it as a consumer brand token attached to a well-known NFT collection, not as a share in the collection or as a governance right over it.

Moonbirds was created by PROOF Collective, a group associated with investor and podcaster Kevin Rose, and minted in April 2022. Its signature mechanic, "nesting," let owners mark a Moonbird as held without moving it to a staking contract, accruing tier status over time while custody stayed in the owner's own wallet.
Ownership of the brand has changed twice. Yuga Labs, the studio behind Bored Ape Yacht Club, acquired Moonbirds and related PROOF assets in early 2024. In May 2025, Yuga Labs sold Moonbirds along with the Mythics and Oddities collections to Orange Cap Games, part of a wider Yuga divestment of collections it no longer treated as core. Orange Cap Games confirms on its own site that it owns the Moonbirds, Mythics and Oddities intellectual property.
Orange Cap Games is a games studio rather than a pure NFT operator. Its other work includes Vibes, a physical and digital trading card game built on the Pudgy Penguins license, and a proprietary card stock product. The studio announced the BIRB token in December 2025 and shipped the token generation event on January 28, 2026.
Three separate layers are involved, and it helps to keep them apart.
The NFT layer on Ethereum The original ERC-721 contract is immutable and closed at 10,000 items. Traits, provenance and secondary trading all live on Ethereum and are unaffected by anything that happens on Solana.
The token layer on Solana BIRB is a standard SPL token with six decimals. A live read of the mint account shows both the mint authority and the freeze authority set to null, which means no new BIRB can be created and no holder's balance can be frozen by the issuer. The issued quantity sits marginally below one billion units, consistent with a one billion issuance and a small amount removed.
The brand and product layer Orange Cap Games controls what the token is actually used for: rewards, activations, and whatever games or products it ships under the Moonbirds name. This layer is off-chain and discretionary.
Documented utility is thin, and it is more honest to say so than to invent it. Orange Cap Games has positioned BIRB as a brand and consumer activation token intended to power rewards, incentives and low-cost on-chain experiences around the Moonbirds universe. It is explicitly not framed as a governance token for the NFT collection, and no consolidated token paper setting out full allocation, vesting and emission terms has been published in one place by the issuer.
What can be verified on-chain is narrow: the issued quantity cannot be expanded, balances cannot be frozen by the issuer, and the asset behaves as an ordinary transferable SPL token. Everything beyond that depends on the studio's roadmap.
Moonbirds is one of the few 2022-era profile picture collections to survive two changes of corporate ownership and still ship a new product. The nesting mechanic was also genuinely novel at the time, because it gave holders a loyalty signal without asking them to hand their NFT to a third-party contract, avoiding a class of custody risk that affected several competing staking designs. The cross-chain split is unusual too: the art stays on Ethereum, where its history and liquidity are, while the token was issued on Solana, where transaction costs suit frequent small rewards.
Compared with NFT-linked tokens such as ApeCoin, Moonbirds took the opposite path on governance. ApeCoin launched with an explicit DAO and voting structure; BIRB launched as a studio-controlled brand asset. Compared with Pudgy Penguins, which built consumer reach through physical toys and retail distribution before any token, Orange Cap Games is attempting a similar product-led route while also running a token from an earlier stage. Against ordinary Solana meme tokens, BIRB has a recognized intellectual property and an operating studio behind it; against blue-chip NFT collections, it has a liquid fungible instrument. Neither advantage is automatic.
Security comes from the two underlying chains, not from the project. The NFT collection inherits Ethereum's proof-of-stake security and the immutability of its ERC-721 contract. BIRB inherits Solana's validator set and the guarantees of the SPL token program.
The strongest project-specific security fact is the revoked authority set on the BIRB mint. With the mint authority null, no party including the issuer can dilute holders by minting more; with the freeze authority null, no party can freeze an individual account. Both are verifiable directly from the mint account and do not rely on any promise.
Moonbirds is a useful case study in what happens to NFT intellectual property after the speculative phase ends. Rather than being abandoned, the brand was sold to an operator with a physical and digital games business, which then attached a token to it on a cheaper chain. It is one of the more concrete attempts to convert a profile picture collection into an operating consumer business rather than a pure collectibles market.
BIRB trades on Solana decentralized exchanges through any wallet that supports SPL tokens, and it has been listed on several centralized venues since its January 2026 launch. Always match the mint address G7vQWurMkMMm2dU3iZpXYFTHT9Biio4F4gZCrwFpKNwG against the official sources above, because brand-linked token names are frequently cloned.
Listings change over time and vary by jurisdiction. Confirm the Solana deposit network on the exchange's own asset page before transferring, since some venues list similarly named assets on other chains.
