Bifrost, written by the project as BIFROST, is an EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain built on the Substrate framework and designed around cross-chain communication rather than single-chain execution. Its purpose is to let one application reach assets and data on several networks at once, using validators that also act as message relayers between chains.
BFC is the network's native coin, paying transaction fees, securing the chain through delegated staking, and carrying governance rights.
One confusion is worth settling first. Several unrelated projects use the name Bifrost. This page covers BIFROST Network, the Substrate-based layer 1 at bifrostnetwork.com whose native coin is BFC, not Bifrost Finance, the Polkadot-based liquid staking project at bifrost.io whose token is BNC.
Official sources:
Bifrost is built by PiLab Technology, founded in 2017 in Seoul, South Korea, with Dohyun Pak as chief executive. PiLab raised a Series A led by Korea Investment Partners and STIC Ventures before the chain went live.
The team's first well-known product was BiFi, a multichain lending platform reaching networks including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Lessons from running BiFi across chains fed directly into the design of a dedicated interoperability layer 1, and the BIFROST Network mainnet launched on January 29, 2023. Because BFC existed as an ERC-20 token beforehand, wrapped representations remain on Ethereum and Fantom alongside the native coin.
Bifrost combines a conventional Substrate consensus stack with a purpose-built messaging layer.
Delegated proof of stake Nominators back validators with staked BFC. The active set is refreshed each round by total voting power, meaning self-bonded stake plus nominations received. Validators earn round rewards, share part with nominators, and can be slashed for misbehavior.
Block production and finality AuRa assigns each slot to a validator in rotation. GRANDPA finalizes a block and everything beneath it once more than two thirds of active validators affirm it.
Cross-Chain Communication Protocol CCCP is what makes Bifrost more than another EVM chain. A socket contract is deployed on Bifrost and on each supported external chain. A user request emits a cross-chain event from one socket contract, relayers carry it to the destination socket contract, and the request moves through explicit statuses until every step has executed. Multiple relayers carry each message so the protocol survives individual relayer failure, and a timeout rollback keeps user funds from being stranded if the whole relayer group stalls.
The validator and relayer sets overlap by design: core validators run relayer duty, so the same stake that secures block production also underwrites message delivery.
BFC is used for:
BFC is inflationary and has no fixed protocol cap. The documented inflation model does not target total supply; it targets the amount of BFC staked. Three rates are defined, currently roughly 7 percent minimum, 10 percent ideal, and 13 percent maximum, and the network selects among them according to whether staking sits below, inside, or above the expected band, so rewards fall when staking is plentiful and rise when it is scarce. Governance can change these parameters, so treat any figure as current configuration. On July 18, 2025 the project also announced a burn model tied to its StableDAO initiative, separate from base issuance.
The distinctive choice is folding relaying into validation. Many interoperability designs bolt a separate bridge operator or oracle committee onto a chain that knows nothing about it; Bifrost makes message delivery a duty of the same staked validator set that produces blocks, keeping one accountability surface instead of two. The Unified Token design is the second unusual piece, merging bridged versions of an asset at the contract level rather than leaving developers to reconcile them.
Compared with general-purpose layer 1s, Bifrost is narrower: it assumes most interesting applications will span chains.
Consensus safety comes from the staked validator set, AuRa slot assignment, and GRANDPA's two-thirds finality threshold, with slashing for misbehavior. Message safety comes from relayer signatures: every cross-chain message must be signed by a valid relayer, and every socket contract verifies that signature against the current validator list, which relayers keep synchronized on each external chain. Stalled or reverted transactions trigger rollback handling so assets do not remain locked.
The limit is the same as for any externally verified messaging system: a destination chain trusts the relayer set rather than a light client proof of the source chain.
Interoperability is one of the few problems in this industry that no single approach has solved. Bifrost tests a specific answer: make validators responsible for cross-chain delivery, give developers one unified representation per asset, and keep it Ethereum-compatible so existing tooling applies. Whether that model wins is open, but it is coherent and operating, with a live mainnet and an actively maintained node client.
BFC trades on centralized exchanges, with activity historically concentrated on Korean venues. Availability, pairs, and deposit networks differ by exchange and jurisdiction. Note that some exchanges support the native Bifrost Network coin while others support the Ethereum ERC-20 representation; sending to the wrong network can lose funds.
