Tokenised GBP (tGBP) is a fiat-referenced token designed to hold a one-to-one value relationship with the British pound. It is issued by BCP Technologies Ltd, a UK company registered with the Financial Conduct Authority as a cryptoasset business under reference number 928840. Each token is intended to be backed by an equivalent amount of cash and cash equivalents held off chain, and holders with a direct relationship to the issuer can redeem tokens for sterling.
It is important to be precise about what tGBP is not. There is no tGBP blockchain, no consensus mechanism, no validator set, no staking and no protocol governance. It is a token contract deployed across several existing networks, and its value claim rests entirely on an off-chain balance sheet plus a redemption commitment from a single company.
Official sources:
tGBP has no founding team in the sense a protocol does, because it is a product rather than a network. The relevant entity is the issuer, BCP Technologies Ltd, which developed the token through a testing phase in the FCA's Regulatory Sandbox and brought it to market on 3 June 2025. At launch it was presented as the first live sterling-denominated stablecoin issued by a firm holding UK cryptoasset registration.
Distribution has since widened through consumer and institutional channels. The issuer lists exchange availability at Kraken, Coinbase and Bitpanda, institutional access to tokenized funds and bonds through the Archax platform, and payment or remittance partners including Coins.ph and Wirex.
Minting against a sterling deposit Eligible businesses transfer pounds from a UK bank account by Faster Payments or CHAPS. Once the issuer receives the funds it mints the matching quantity of tGBP directly to the customer's wallet on the network they select.
Redemption back to bank money To redeem, a holder returns tokens to a designated address. The issuer burns them and sends the equivalent sterling off chain. This is a contractual obligation of the company, settled through the banking system, and not something a smart contract can perform on its own.
Supply is created on demand and is not capped There is no maximum supply and no issuance schedule. Units come into existence when new sterling is deposited and are destroyed when tokens are redeemed, so the outstanding amount simply tracks demand.
Movement across networks The contract implements LayerZero's omnichain fungible token standard. Moving tGBP between supported networks burns the token on the source chain and mints it on the destination chain, so it remains the same asset rather than becoming a locked-and-wrapped claim on another chain's version.
StableTokenV1OFT, an upgradeable ERC-20 using the UUPS proxy pattern with EIP-2612 permit support and an emergency pauseBannable, which maintains an on-chain list of blocked addresses and enforces it on transfers0x27f6c8289550fce67f6b50bed1f519966afe5287, with Gnosis Chain as the exception at 0x1f34490f8e8e776ffc547b39b864364035eaf44ftGBP has no fee, staking or governance role. Its usefulness is entirely about denomination and settlement:
Compared with the large dollar tokens, the difference is currency exposure. A holder of a sterling token carries pound risk, not dollar risk, which matters for a UK business that would otherwise convert twice to move value on chain.
The comparison that matters most is against ordinary UK bank money. The issuer states plainly that tGBP does not meet the definition of electronic money, because a customer receives a cryptoasset rather than an e-money balance, and that the product is not protected or guaranteed by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. A pound in a UK bank account and a pound represented by tGBP are not the same instrument, and the difference is exactly where the risk lives.
Security here has three separate surfaces, and confusing them is the most common mistake.
Contract security has been reviewed independently by OpenZeppelin, with published reports in 2024 and again in 2025 covering the version two contracts. The 2025 review identified one critical issue, since resolved, in which blocked addresses could bypass transfer restrictions through the cross-chain send path.
Reserve security depends on the segregated account arrangement with UK banking partners and on monthly independent attestations.
Messaging security applies whenever tokens move between networks, because that path relies on the LayerZero verification setup rather than on the destination chain alone.
Non-dollar stablecoins have been the weakest part of on-chain money for years, and sterling in particular has been underserved relative to the size of the UK economy and its capital markets. tGBP is a test of whether a regulated domestic issuer, a conservative reserve and multi-network distribution are enough to make a non-dollar unit genuinely useful for payments and for settling tokenized securities.
Minting directly from the issuer is available to eligible businesses that complete onboarding and send pounds from a UK bank account. Everyone else buys and sells on the secondary market. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction, and some venues restrict access to UK or European users.
The issuer lists exchange distribution including:
Institutional access to sterling-settled tokenized funds and bonds is offered through the Archax platform. Confirm the network and contract address before any swap.
Two checks matter more here than for most assets. Select the correct network, because the same token exists on eight of them. And remember that self-custody protects you from exchange failure but not from issuer risk, since the block list and pause functions operate at the contract level.
