SWEAT is a token that is minted when people walk. Steps verified by the Sweatcoin app are converted into SWEAT inside Sweat Wallet, which makes it one of the few crypto assets where physical activity, not capital or computing power, creates new tokens. It matters because it is one of the largest consumer-facing crypto experiments: the project reports more than 20 million Sweat Wallet users, many of whom first touched crypto through step rewards.
SWEAT is the currency of what its creators call the "Movement Economy". According to the SWEAT whitepaper, every token starts as verified movement. The token launched in September 2022 on the NEAR blockchain and has since been extended to other networks. It is used for rewards, staking, spending with partners, trading and governance through the SWEAT DAO.
SWEAT grew out of Sweatcoin, a step-rewards app. The whitepaper names three co-founders:
Milestones listed in the whitepaper include the September 2022 launch alongside what the project calls the largest crypto airdrop at the time, the Sweat Wallet launch, staking through Growth Jars, DAO governance and a multichain rollout. The public sale portion (1.33% of the genesis supply) sold $1M of SWEAT on DAO Maker in 15 minutes, per the whitepaper.
Movement verification The Sweatcoin app counts and validates steps, using what the whitepaper calls fraud-proof validation.
Minting with rising difficulty At launch, 1,000 steps minted 1 SWEAT. The requirement increases by 12 steps every day, so by April 2025 roughly 7,600 steps were needed for one token. This linear difficulty curve slows new issuance over time.
Uncapped supply with deflationary pressure There is no hard cap. Instead, scarcity is meant to come from the rising step requirement, token burns and staking. The whitepaper states that 50% of the SWEAT Foundation's profits will be used to buy back and burn SWEAT, and that over 3.4 billion SWEAT had been permanently removed through community-approved burns.
The whitepaper frames utility as five actions:
Genesis allocation (September 2022 TGE): Foundation Treasury 27.71%, Lockdrop to early users 25.0%, SweatCo Ltd 22.0%, Team and Advisors 10.92%, Ecosystem 7.02%, Private Round 3.33%, Seed Round 2.68%, Public Sale 1.33%.
Most "move-to-earn" tokens require buying an NFT or paying an entry fee. SWEAT is minted from walking alone, which gives it an unusually large and mainstream user base. Its governance is also different: votes are counted per person rather than per token, and the whitepaper reports that 355,000 users voted on one proposal to adjust minting rules.
SWEAT is an application token rather than a chain. Compared with GMT from STEPN, which built earning around NFT sneakers, SWEAT has no upfront purchase requirement. Compared with tap-to-earn tokens like Notcoin, SWEAT ties issuance to verified physical activity and a daily-rising difficulty curve. It relies on NEAR Protocol for its core infrastructure and wallet keys.
SWEAT's native deployment relies on NEAR's proof-of-stake validator set, and the token's other deployments rely on the security of each host chain (for example Ethereum). Step data is validated off-chain by Sweatcoin before minting, so the integrity of issuance depends on that validator. The whitepaper states that the project conducts smart contract audits and annual compliance audits and publishes a MiCA-format white paper; specific audit reports were not linked in the sections we reviewed.
SWEAT is a live test of whether a mass-market app can bring millions of people on-chain through a daily habit. Its step-based minting curve, per-person governance and multichain wallet make it a reference point for consumer crypto design.
The whitepaper states SWEAT trades on more than 20 centralized and decentralized exchanges. It is native on NEAR (token token.sweat, viewable on NearBlocks) and also has an ERC-20 contract on Ethereum (Etherscan). Users can also earn it directly in Sweat Wallet. Confirm contract addresses on official SWEAT channels before trading.
Sweat Wallet is the official self-custodial app and supports NEAR, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Arbitrum and Base addresses. NEAR-compatible wallets can hold the native token, and EVM wallets can hold the bridged versions on supported chains.
