Keep Network was an Ethereum privacy layer that let smart contracts work with private data by storing it in offchain containers called keeps, secured by threshold cryptography and secure multiparty computation. Its best known product was tBTC, a decentralized bridge that mints a Bitcoin backed token on Ethereum without a central custodian.
The most important fact about KEEP today is that the project no longer operates as a standalone network. In January 2022, Keep Network merged with NuCypher to form the Threshold Network, and the merged protocol issues a new token, T. KEEP still exists as a live ERC-20 on Ethereum and can be converted to T at a fixed ratio, but development, staking, and tBTC now happen on Threshold. Treat KEEP as a legacy asset with a one way upgrade path rather than the token of an actively developed network.
Official sources:
Keep Network was founded in 2017 by Matt Luongo and Corbin Pon, working out of the studio Thesis. The KEEP token contract was deployed in April 2020, and tBTC version one launched on Ethereum in September 2020 as the network's flagship application.
In late 2021 the Keep and NuCypher communities proposed something unusual: a merger of two live decentralized protocols, decided by each side's own governance rather than by a corporate transaction. Both approved, and the Threshold Network went live at the start of January 2022 with T distribution running through that first quarter. Legacy staking wound down quickly. Threshold announced the legacy stake upgrade on 2 March 2022, and from the end of that month staking rewards were paid only to operators running on Threshold. Keep's own blog has not been updated since November 2021, and the original keep-network/keep-core repository now redirects to the Threshold organization on GitHub.
Keep's original design has three parts worth understanding, because they still describe the machinery underneath tBTC.
Keeps as offchain containers A keep is a private data container whose contents are split across a group of operators using secure multiparty computation. No single operator can read the secret, and the group can sign with it without ever reconstructing it in one place.
The random beacon Selecting operator groups fairly requires unpredictable randomness. Keep built a BLS threshold signature based random beacon producing publicly verifiable random values, so no participant can choose a signing group they control.
Threshold ECDSA signing Bitcoin uses ECDSA signatures. Keep implemented distributed ECDSA key generation and signing so a group of operators can jointly control a Bitcoin address. That is what makes a decentralized Bitcoin bridge possible: the deposit address exists on Bitcoin, but no single party holds its private key.
Threshold inherited and rebuilt this stack. Today tBTC uses a rotating operator set drawn from T stakers, with threshold cryptography rather than a custodian standing behind each minted token.
KEEP was issued with a maximum supply of one billion tokens. In its active period it was a work token: operators staked KEEP to be eligible for random beacon and ECDSA signing groups, and earned fees for the work those groups performed.
That utility has moved to T, and KEEP's practical function today is the upgrade path. The published conversion ratio is approximately 4.78 T per KEEP, with roughly 3.26 T per NU on the NuCypher side, derived from each network's total supply rather than market price using snapshots of about 940.8 million KEEP and about 1.38 billion NU. Two details matter for holders. The conversion is one way, so T cannot be converted back into KEEP. And Threshold's documentation states there is no deadline, because the vending machine contracts are autonomous and intended to remain available indefinitely.
Keep's lasting contribution is not a market position but a piece of engineering and a piece of governance history. On engineering, it delivered a working threshold ECDSA implementation and a random beacon at a time when most Bitcoin on Ethereum was custodial, a goal captured in the project's own slogan about trusting math rather than hardware. On governance, the Keep and NuCypher merger was the first onchain merger of two independent decentralized protocols, executed by token holder vote on both sides and settled through permanent conversion contracts, and it became a reference case for how protocol level mergers can be structured.
Compared with custodial wrapped Bitcoin products, tBTC removed the single custodian and replaced it with a distributed signing group whose members are economically bonded. That is a stronger trust model and a more complex one.
Compared with other privacy oriented projects, Keep never aimed to make transactions anonymous. It aimed to let public smart contracts hold and act on private data, which is a different problem. And compared with tokens whose networks were simply abandoned, KEEP has an orderly, documented successor and a permanent conversion contract, which is a materially better outcome for holders.
New participation in staking, node operation, or protocol rewards happens with T, not with KEEP.
The KEEP token is an ERC-20 on Ethereum and inherits Ethereum's security for transfers and balances, and the conversion contracts are immutable and were audited before deployment.
The protocol level security KEEP once backed now sits with Threshold, where it depends on the size and distribution of the T staking set, the correctness of the threshold cryptography implementation, the honesty assumptions of each signing group, and the Bitcoin and Ethereum contracts that tie the bridge together. Threshold has continued to adjust staking economics, including stake based fee waivers on tBTC minting and redemption introduced in January 2026.
Keep Network matters for two reasons that outlast its ticker. It shipped one of the first credible attempts at trust minimized Bitcoin on Ethereum, and the cryptography it built still underpins tBTC today. And it proved that two decentralized protocols could merge through their own governance processes, with a permanent, contract enforced conversion for holders.
KEEP still trades on a limited set of centralized venues and on Ethereum decentralized exchanges, but liquidity is thinner than before the merger and several exchanges migrated user balances to T. Many people researching KEEP are better served by looking at T directly. Availability varies by jurisdiction.
Where KEEP is still supported, it has typically appeared on:
Confirm on the exchange's own asset page before depositing, because listings for legacy tokens change without much notice.
KEEP is a standard ERC-20, so it can be held on an exchange, which is custodial, in any Ethereum compatible non custodial wallet, or behind a hardware wallet paired with a compatible interface. If you intend to upgrade, connect only to the official Threshold dashboard and verify the KEEP contract address before approving any transaction.
