Checkmate (CHECK) is the token of the Checkmate ecosystem, a network of strategy games whose first launch partner is Anichess, a chess game with spells developed by Animoca Brands in partnership with Chess.com. CHECK is used for tournament and ranked-match entry, staking for progression rewards, collectibles and governance. It matters as one of the few gaming tokens built around a real, widely played game rather than a new fantasy world.
The token has a fixed supply of 1,000,000,000 CHECK, and its contract is deployed on Ethereum and Base at the same address.
The Anichess documentation states that the game was developed by Animoca Brands in partnership with Chess.com, and lists ambassadors including Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri and Dina Belenkaya. The wider ecosystem is presented by the Checkmate Foundation, which describes "a network where strategy connects play, creation, and education". Anichess adopted CHECK to benefit from network effects inside that ecosystem. A specific token launch date was not stated on the pages we opened.
Anichess plays like chess with an extra layer of spells. Each spell has an effect, a mana cost and a cast limit per game, and most spells count as your move. Examples from the docs:
Transformation Parkour Mech turns non-royal pieces into Knights (3 mana, two casts).
Movement Slip lets certain pieces move diagonally and steals 1 mana from the opponent.
Tactics Imposter swaps one of your pieces with an opponent's piece of the same type.
High impact Queen Time lets a Knight, Bishop or Rook move like a Queen once per game (7 mana).
Game modes include Quick Match, Ranked Match (Glicko-2 rating, unlocked after five quick matches), Friend Match and Train with Bot at four difficulty levels.
Documented allocation of the 1 billion supply: Player Rewards 39.38%, Ecosystem and Treasury 20%, Investors 13.62%, Team 10%, Liquidity 7%, Operational Expenses 4%, Advisors 4% and Kaito Launchpad 2%.
Staking offers two pools. The OG Pool, for Season 1 to 4 and Eternal holders, requires staking the whole balance, is one-way once exited, and carries a permanent 5x multiplier on rewards. The Public Pool allows flexible staking at a 1x rate. Both earn from Checkmate Reign, a 50,000,000 CHECK reward program distributed over 24 months, with retro bonuses at months 6, 12, 18 and 24.
CHECK is tied to a game with a huge existing player base and a recognised partner in Chess.com. Spells add variety while chess skill still decides most games, and the token is designed to serve several strategy titles rather than one.
Axie Infinity and Big Time built new game worlds from scratch, and Pixels centres on farming and social play. CHECK instead builds on chess, a skill game that already has rating systems and competitive culture. Moca Network, also linked to Animoca Brands, focuses on identity and loyalty across many projects rather than one game ecosystem.
CHECK is an ERC-20 token secured by Ethereum and by Base, an Ethereum layer 2. Contracts can be checked on Etherscan and BaseScan. Governance starts with the core team and is planned to shift gradually to CHECK holders through a DAO Council, so early decisions remain centralised.
