Aavegotchi is an on-chain gaming ecosystem built around collectible ghost NFTs, called Aavegotchis, that each hold interest-bearing aTokens from the Aave lending protocol as staked collateral. The website describes an Aavegotchi as "a fully-owned onchain companion that doubles as a cross-game avatar." GHST is the ecosystem's token: it buys portals and items, is the currency of the in-game marketplace, and gives voting power in AavegotchiDAO. Aavegotchi matters as one of the longer-running experiments in combining DeFi yield, NFTs and community governance in a game.
Aavegotchi is developed and stewarded by Pixelcraft Studios, which the official site footer names as Pixelcraft Studios Pte. Ltd.; a recent post on the site says Pixelcraft has been the primary studio behind the ecosystem and is exploring moving beyond a single-studio model. The docs we reviewed do not name individual founders.
The project's history can be traced through its token deployments: GHST exists on Ethereum, on Polygon (where much of the game ran and where burns have been recorded), and on Base. The homepage now states that Aavegotchi has migrated to Base. The Geist documentation also describes a planned members-only gaming chain, an L3 built with the Arbitrum stack that settles to Base, uses GHST as its gas token and has Alchemy as its rollup-as-a-service provider.
Portals and summoning Players buy Portals with GHST. Per the developer concepts page, each Portal holds 10 candidate Aavegotchis with traits generated through Chainlink VRF. The player claims one by staking the required amount of the assigned aToken collateral into the Aavegotchi's escrow address.
Traits and rarity Each Aavegotchi has on-chain traits (Energy, Aggression, Spookiness, Brain Size, Eye Shape, Eye Color). Traits closer to 0 or 99 are rarer, and the combined Base Rarity Score starts at 300 at minimum. Wearables and Spirit Points can boost scores.
Kinship and XP Kinship starts at 50 and rises when owners "pet" their Aavegotchi on chain; it decays if neglected. XP comes from events and from voting in DAO proposals.
Rarity Farming Seasons, generally about eight weeks long and approved by DAO vote, reward the top Aavegotchis in Rarity, Kinship and XP leaderboards with GHST. The docs say the typical prize pool per season is 1.5M GHST, adjustable by proposal.

The docs state a total supply of 52,747,802 GHST on Ethereum, or roughly 50 million after subtracting GHST burned on Polygon, with no active vesting lockups.
Each Aavegotchi is effectively a small DeFi position wrapped in a game character: the collateral inside it is interest-bearing Aave aTokens, and that collateral also influences the ghost's traits. Combined with a highly active DAO that votes on game seasons and supply, this makes the NFT both a game asset and a governance and yield participant.
GHST and the game contracts inherit security from the chains they run on (Ethereum, Polygon and Base). Aavegotchi uses the Diamond standard, whose governance and upgrade documentation describes how upgrades are controlled. Randomness for traits comes from Chainlink VRF, and a lock mechanism prevents an Aavegotchi's state from being changed during a trade. The collateral held inside each Aavegotchi also carries the risk profile of the Aave protocol.
Aavegotchi was an early attempt to make NFTs productive assets rather than static collectibles, and its DAO has voted on real game economics for years. It remains a useful case study in how on-chain games can be governed by their players.
