Illuvium is a connected group of blockchain games built by an Australian studio, with player-owned items recorded as NFTs on Immutable and a governance and staking token, ILV, issued on Ethereum. The premise is a science fiction world where players capture creatures called Illuvials and carry them between several games rather than a single title.
ILV itself is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. A live read of the contract at 0x767fe9edc9e0df98e07454847909b5e959d7ca0e confirms the name Illuvium, the symbol ILV, and 18 decimals. Project materials describe a fixed cap of 10 million ILV, and the on-chain supply sits below that figure.
The important thing to understand about Illuvium is that its release history has been long and staged. Games have gone through open beta, storefront releases, chain migrations and mode changes over several years, so descriptions written at any single point in that history tend to age badly.

Illuvium was founded in 2020 and is associated with brothers Kieran Warwick and Aaron Warwick, working alongside a pseudonymous game design lead. Development is carried out by Illuvium Labs, with a separate token-holder governance structure that project documentation calls the eDAO and the Illuvinati Council. The documentation states plainly that this governance model is an initial one and is subject to change.
The three headline titles entered open beta together on July 25, 2024. In December 2025 the team published guidance for players covering a move of Illuvium assets and core services from its earlier Immutable infrastructure to Immutable zkEVM, with the migration window scheduled to open in late January of the following year. Development has continued since: Arena patch notes were still being published through 2026, and a new mode called Deathmatch was introduced in June 2026.
Illuvium separates ownership from gameplay. Assets live on Immutable, an Ethereum scaling environment, while the games themselves are conventional PC clients. Ownership is optional rather than mandatory for most play.
Capture and collection In Illuvium: Overworld, players explore, gather resources and capture Illuvials. Captured Illuvials become tokens the player owns.
Competitive play Illuvium: Arena is an autobattler. It is free to play, and all players get access to the full roster in the free mode. Owned Illuvials add cosmetic upgrades everywhere and carry their individual stats into Leviathan Mode, where ownership becomes a competitive factor.
Resource production Illuvium: Zero is a companion builder in which players develop industrial complexes on Illuvium land to produce Fuel, an in-game resource.
Economic loop Spending inside the games and trading on the IlluviDEX marketplace routes value into a Vault, which the protocol uses to buy ILV that stakers can later claim.

Three things separate Illuvium from most blockchain game tokens. It is a franchise rather than a single game, and assets are designed to move between titles. The studio shipped high production value 3D clients through a mainstream storefront rather than staying inside crypto-native distribution. And the token model is explicitly revenue-linked: the Vault collects value from in-game spending and a share of marketplace trades, then buys ILV from the market for distribution rather than relying solely on emissions.
Illuvium is not a chain. It is an application that settles ownership onto Immutable, so comparisons are more useful against other game economies than against Layer 1 networks.
Security spans several layers. Asset custody depends on Immutable and, beneath it, Ethereum. The ILV token and staking contracts are Ethereum smart contracts and carry ordinary smart contract risk. Player accounts depend on wallet infrastructure provided through the Immutable ecosystem. Game outcomes and matchmaking run on the studio's own servers, which are not decentralized and are not intended to be. The migration to Immutable zkEVM also changed how assets are represented: unique assets such as Illuvials, Illuvitars and land plots remain ERC-721, non-unique items were consolidated into ERC-1155 collections, and certain consumable ingredients moved off-chain entirely.
Illuvium is one of the few blockchain game projects that actually shipped multiple playable, visually ambitious titles and kept updating them. Whether or not the token model succeeds, it is a useful reference case for how player-owned assets can be represented on a scaling network, moved between separate games, and restructured when the underlying infrastructure changes.
