Boundless is a decentralized marketplace for zero-knowledge proofs. A developer posts a proof request, independent operators called provers compete to fulfill it, and the finished proof is verified on the chain that asked for it. The goal is to turn proof generation into a commodity service any chain can buy, rather than a fixed cost each project engineers alone.
ZKC, also branded ZK Coin, is the protocol's native token. It is not a gas token. It is the asset provers lock as collateral when they accept work, the asset stakers lock to earn protocol rewards and voting power, and the unit in which the protocol pays out proving incentives.

One note on links that older articles still use: the former domain beboundless.xyz now redirects to boundless.network, and the old documentation host was not serving a valid TLS certificate when checked on September 11, 2026. Treat boundless.network as the live property.
Boundless grew out of RISC Zero, the team behind one of the first open-source general-purpose zkVMs, a virtual machine that proves correct execution of ordinary RISC-V programs. RISC Zero was founded in 2021; published accounts name Jeremy Bruestle, Frank Laub and Brian Retford among the founding group, and date the Boundless effort to 2022 with Shiv Shankar, who later became chief executive of Boundless. Sources differ on exact titles, so treat individual attributions as approximate.
The protocol's mainnet went live in September 2025, deployed on Base, and introduced the Proof of Verifiable Work incentive model alongside the ZKC token. Backing and early integration support came from parties including the Ethereum Foundation, Base, Wormhole and EigenLayer.
Boundless is best understood as a market with three sides:
Requestors A developer, rollup or application submits a proof request describing a computation and the maximum fee it will pay. Requestors pay in the native token of whatever chain they settle on, not in ZKC.
Provers Operators run the Boundless proving stack, bid for orders, generate proofs off-chain and submit them for on-chain verification. Before a prover can lock an order it must deposit ZKC as collateral, documented at roughly ten times the request's maximum fee.
Settlement and rewards Verified proofs settle on the requesting chain. Separately, the protocol measures how much real proving work each prover performed and distributes ZKC emissions accordingly. That measurement is what Boundless calls Proof of Verifiable Work, or PoVW, and participating in it is referred to as ZK mining.
Rewards are distributed in epochs of roughly two days, so about 182 epochs occur per year. Of each epoch's emission, 25 percent goes to stakers as staking rewards and 75 percent goes to stakers who also submitted valid proving work during that epoch.
On supply, the token launched with a genesis supply of one billion ZKC and a first-year emission rate of 7 percent, which project materials describe as tapering toward roughly 3 percent by the eighth year. An on-chain read of the Ethereum contract on September 11, 2026 returned the name ZK Coin, the symbol ZKC, 18 decimals, and no cap() function, which is consistent with a design that keeps issuing rather than one with a hard ceiling. That contract is also an EIP-1967 proxy, meaning the logic behind it can be replaced. Governance controls emission parameters, so the schedule should be treated as changeable by vote rather than as an immutable constant.
Most proving systems are vertically integrated: a rollup builds or buys a prover and runs it for itself. Boundless separates proof demand from proving capacity and lets an open market clear between them. Capacity then scales as independent operators join rather than as one company adds hardware, and the incentive is denominated in work actually performed and verified, not in stake weight or uptime.
Boundless is not a Layer 1 or a rollup, so comparing it to a settlement chain is a category mistake. It sits closer to a shared service layer. A zk-rollup produces proofs only for its own state transitions; Boundless produces proofs for anyone who pays. And unlike a general restaking market, its unit of account is a verified computation with a deterministic pass or fail result, which makes slashing conditions far cleaner than subjective performance disputes.
Security rests on separate layers. Proof correctness is cryptographic: a valid proof verifies on-chain or it does not. Liveness is economic: collateral, burning and bounty reassignment make late delivery expensive. Settlement security is inherited from whichever chain verifies the proof. Staking and governance live on Ethereum mainnet, and the DAO holds upgrade authority over the market and token contracts, covering market upgrades, emission changes, governance changes, grants and emergency fixes.
If zero-knowledge proofs become routine infrastructure rather than a specialist capability, something has to make proving cheap, plural and available on demand. Boundless is one of the more concrete attempts at that: an open market with a measurable work unit, verifiable settlement and an incentive that pays for output rather than promises.
ZKC trades on large centralized venues and on-chain. Availability differs by jurisdiction, so check what your exchange supports first.

The canonical contract on Ethereum is 0x000006c2A22ff4A44ff1f5d0F2ed65F781F55555, and a bridged representation exists on BNB Chain at 0x15247e6E23D3923a853cCf15940A20CCdf16e94a. Verify any address against the official documentation before transacting.
Any standard Ethereum wallet holds ZKC, including hardware wallets such as Ledger and Trezor. Because staking happens on Ethereum mainnet through the official portal, holders who intend to stake need self-custody rather than an exchange balance. The documentation also recommends separating the wallet used for proving operations from the one holding staked balances.
