Sahara AI is a decentralized artificial intelligence platform built around a single unresolved problem in the AI industry: nobody can reliably prove where a model's training data came from, and the people who produced that data are almost never paid. Sahara's answer is to register AI assets, meaning datasets, models, and agents, on a blockchain with attribution recorded on chain, so that provenance is verifiable and revenue can be split automatically among contributors.
The platform combines a data services platform where contributors collect, label, and validate data for rewards, a developer platform and marketplace where datasets, models, and agents can be published and monetized, open-source agentic protocols, and a purpose-built blockchain.
An important status note. As of this writing, the Sahara blockchain runs as a public testnet, referred to as SIWA, and the mainnet has not launched. SAHARA today is a token issued on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, not the gas token of a live Sahara network. The gas, validator staking, and native settlement roles described in project material apply to the mainnet the team is still building.
Official sources:
Sahara AI was co-founded by Sean Ren, who serves as chief executive, and Tyler Zhou. Ren is a computer science professor at the University of Southern California with a research record in natural language processing and a former research role at the Allen Institute for AI, which gives the project unusually direct academic grounding for a crypto AI venture. Funding came from investors including Polychain Capital, Binance Labs, Pantera Capital, Samsung Next, and Matrix Partners. The SIWA public testnet launched in 2025, and the SAHARA token launched in June 2025 on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain.
Since then the product emphasis has broadened noticeably toward autonomous agents, including an open-source desktop application for running local agents and a personal investment agent. Anyone reading older descriptions of Sahara as purely a data-provenance protocol is reading an earlier phase.
Data is contributed and validated Contributors on the Data Services Platform complete collection, labeling, and validation tasks across text, image, audio, and other modalities, earning rewards for accepted work. It is deliberately open to non-developers, which is how the network sources human input at scale.
AI assets are registered on chain Datasets, models, and agents are registered with ownership and provenance recorded on the blockchain. Registration is what makes downstream attribution and revenue sharing enforceable rather than promised.
Assets are licensed and monetized The AI Marketplace lets owners publish work under defined terms, and when an asset is used or licensed the protocol layer distributes revenue to the contributors recorded against it.
Agents run and pay for what they use Open-source agentic protocols support deploying agents with verifiable compute and workflow controls. Under the mainnet design, agent execution and inference are paid for in the network's token.
The blockchain settles it The documented architecture has three layers: a base Layer 1 built with the Cosmos SDK using Tendermint-style Byzantine fault tolerant consensus, a smart contract layer managing the AI asset lifecycle, licensing, and revenue distribution, and an execution layer handling compute allocation, model deployment, and trusted execution environment integration. The chain is fully EVM compatible, and the public testnet runs with EVM chain ID 313313.
SAHARA is issued as an ERC-20 on Ethereum at 0xfdffb411c4a70aa7c95d5c981a6fb4da867e1111 with 18 decimals, and as a BEP-20 on BNB Smart Chain. A live read of the Ethereum contract confirms the symbol, the decimal precision, and a genesis supply of exactly ten billion tokens.
Documented roles, with live and planned functions distinguished:
Documented allocation is 64.25 percent community-focused, covering airdrops, community distribution, ecosystem development, and incentives, 19.75 percent to early backers, 15 percent to the core team and contributors, and 1 percent to liquidity and market stability. The community share is unusually large for a venture-backed project, though a large allocation is not the same thing as a fast or even distribution, and unlocks continue well past launch.
The provenance-and-attribution framing is the sharpest part of the thesis. Most decentralized AI projects sell compute or model inference. Sahara targets the ownership question underneath both, and the founding team's academic AI background makes that a credible focus rather than a marketing angle. The second distinguishing feature is that the platform is usable without being a developer: the Data Services Platform is built for ordinary contributors, a plausible route to the scale of human input that data labeling actually requires.
Against decentralized compute marketplaces, which rent out GPU capacity, Sahara operates a layer above the hardware. Compute is an input to its system, not the product. Against incentivized machine learning networks that reward models for competing on defined tasks, Sahara is less a competition and more a registry and marketplace: its claim is about who owns and who gets paid for an AI asset, not about which model performs best. Against general-purpose data protocols, the difference is vertical integration, with sourcing, labeling, registration, licensing, revenue distribution, and agent deployment inside one system and one token.
The most significant structural difference from established competitors is maturity. Several comparable networks have run production mainnets for years. Sahara's chain is still a testnet, and that gap matters when comparing the projects.
Today's security is largely inherited. SAHARA is an ERC-20 on Ethereum and a BEP-20 on BNB Smart Chain, so custody and transfers rely on those chains' consensus and on the correctness of the token contracts. The Sahara blockchain is designed around Tendermint-style Byzantine fault tolerant consensus from the Cosmos SDK, a well-understood family providing fast finality with a known fault tolerance bound. Validator staking in SAHARA is documented as the mainnet security mechanism, which means the chain's economic security does not yet exist in production form.
For the AI-specific parts, the documented approach relies on trusted execution environments for verifiable compute and on on-chain registration for provenance. It is worth being precise about what that proves: registration establishes that a given asset was registered by a given party at a given time. It does not independently prove that the underlying data was collected lawfully or that a model was actually trained on what its registration claims.
The problem Sahara is attacking is real and unusually well defined. AI systems are trained on enormous volumes of human work, attribution is largely absent, compensation is rarer still, and the legal system is currently trying to resolve this through litigation rather than infrastructure. A verifiable registry that records who contributed what and routes payment accordingly is a coherent technical response. Whether Sahara becomes the system that does it is undecided: the team's research credentials and funding are strong, the product surface is broad and growing, and the chain most of the token thesis depends on is still ahead of it.

Because the token exists on two networks, the most common and most expensive mistake is withdrawing on the wrong one. Confirm the network selected on the exchange matches what your wallet expects, and verify the contract address before adding it manually. If a mainnet migration happens later, follow only official instructions and treat any unsolicited migration prompt as a phishing attempt.
