Hippo Protocol is an application-specific Layer 1 blockchain built for healthcare data. Its premise is that medical records are generated about patients but controlled by institutions, and that a patient able to hold and authorize access to their own record could choose to share it, sell it, or contribute it to research on their own terms. The chain exists to make that authorization and settlement layer work.
HP is the network's native coin. It pays transaction fees, secures the chain through delegated proof-of-stake, and carries governance voting rights.
Because "Hippo" is a common name and several unrelated tokens use it, this page is anchored on network identifiers rather than branding. It describes the Cosmos SDK chain whose chain ID is hippo-protocol-1, whose base denomination is ahp, whose address prefix is hippo, and whose node binary is hippod. All four were confirmed live on September 11, 2026.
Official sources:
Hippo Protocol is the successor to Hippocrat, a healthcare data project that ran as an ERC-20 token under the ticker HPO. The team's earlier work is still visible in its code history, including a Hippocrat wallet SDK in the project's GitHub organization.
In 2025 the project rebranded and migrated off Ethereum onto its own sovereign chain. The token swap from HPO to HP was announced at a one-to-one ratio, with the legacy ERC-20 frozen and a migration window kept open after the mainnet launch. Major listing venues suspended HPO deposits and trading around the cutover in the first half of 2025 while the migration completed. The governance proposals that authorized the mainnet and the validator set were published as HIP-1 and HIP-2.
The team has not centered the project on an individual founder's name. Materials are published under the Hippo Protocol entity, and the core implementation has been audited publicly by Oak Security.
Hippo Protocol is a sovereign chain rather than a contract deployed on someone else's network.
Consensus and execution. The chain runs CometBFT for consensus and the Cosmos SDK for application logic. Reported live from a mainnet node, it is running CometBFT 0.38.19 on Cosmos SDK v0.50.14, with the ibc-go stack for interchain messaging. Blocks are finalized by a bonded validator set rather than probabilistically, so a committed block is final.
Stake and delegation. Security is delegated proof-of-stake. Holders bond HP to validators, validators are ranked by total stake, and the active set is capped at 50. Undelegating takes 1,814,400 seconds, which is 21 days, and the protocol enforces a minimum validator commission of 10 percent.
Interoperability. Because the chain speaks IBC, it can move assets and messages to and from other interchain networks without a custodial bridge operator. In a healthcare context that matters mainly for settlement, since payments for data access do not have to be denominated in the chain's own coin.
Healthcare data handling. The design keeps clinical records off-chain and uses the chain for identity, consent and settlement. The whitepaper describes AI agent services layered on top, including health summaries and consultation flows, paid for in HP.
hippod node software, the chain's core implementation, written in Go and published on GitHubHP is used for:
ahpOn supply, be precise. HP is not capped. The chain runs the standard Cosmos SDK mint module, and its live parameters read as follows: the mint denomination is ahp, maximum inflation is 25 percent, minimum inflation is 0 percent, the bonded-ratio target is 67 percent, the inflation rate of change is 0.25, and the chain assumes 5,256,000 blocks per year. In that model the issuance rate moves automatically. If less than 67 percent of supply is bonded, inflation rises toward the ceiling to attract stake; if more is bonded, it falls toward zero. There is no fixed terminal supply, and any description of HP as having a hard cap is incorrect.
The whitepaper additionally describes a declining multi-year issuance schedule and an intended split of new supply, with the large majority going to network and validator rewards. Where that schedule and the live mint parameters differ in shape, the on-chain parameters govern issuance today.
Most healthcare blockchain projects are applications sitting on a general-purpose chain. Hippo Protocol chose to run its own Layer 1 instead, which gives it control over fee policy, block space and governance, and lets it tune the chain to a single domain rather than compete for capacity with unrelated activity. It is also one of the few projects in this category to have completed the full path from ERC-20 to sovereign chain, including a one-to-one holder migration and exchange coordination, which is an operationally demanding move and a meaningful signal about execution capability independent of whether the healthcare thesis works.
Compared with other Cosmos SDK networks:
Security rests on:
The realistic caveat is that a small validator set concentrates control. A chain where the active set has not filled its own cap has a smaller margin against correlated failure or coordinated action than a large, mature interchain network.
Health data is a large, badly coordinated market where the person the data describes usually has the least control over it. Hippo Protocol is one of the more concrete attempts to change that with real infrastructure rather than a token on someone else's chain: a running sovereign network, a completed migration, public audits and an active repository. Whether the healthcare integrations materialize is still open, but the technical foundation is verifiable and live.
HP is listed on centralized exchanges, with the strongest presence in the Korean market where the predecessor HPO token was traded. Availability, pairs and regional access vary. Because HP is a native chain coin rather than an ERC-20, confirm that any venue supports the Hippo Protocol network directly before depositing or withdrawing.
HP is often available on:
Pairs are commonly quoted against KRW and USDT where supported.
After purchase, HP can be held:
hippo address prefix and the hippo-protocol-1 chainOnly a hippo-prefixed bech32 address is valid on this network. Sending HP to an Ethereum-style address, or to a legacy HPO ERC-20 address, will not deliver funds. Verify the chain ID and the address prefix before every transfer.
