Rujira is the application layer built on top of THORChain, and RUJI is its native token. Where THORChain provides cross-chain swaps of native assets without wrapping or third-party bridges, Rujira adds the applications that were missing: an order book exchange, perpetual futures, a money market, index products, liquidation auctions, and a launchpad, all reachable with assets from the chains THORChain already connects.
The distinction that matters is architectural. Rujira is not a separate blockchain and it is not a rollup. It is CosmWasm smart contract functionality running within THORChain itself, which is why it can touch native BTC, ETH, and other assets without a wrapped representation.
Official sources:
Rujira did not start from scratch. It was formed as the Rujira Alliance, a partnership announced in 2024 between Kujira, Levana, and THORChain, and then built by merging several existing teams and their tokens into one.
The projects folded in were Kujira itself, three Kujira ecosystem projects (Fuzion, Unstake, and Gojira), Levana, and later Nami. Holders of KUJI, FUZN, NSTK, WINK, LVN, and NAMI could convert into RUJI. The Kujira team, which had been building DeFi products since before the Terra collapse in 2022, leads development and operations, with Levana contributing the first version of the perpetuals product.
The dates are documented precisely. The main merge opened on April 5, 2025 with a twelve-month conversion window, a rate fixed at parity for the first four weeks and declining linearly afterward so that early converters received the best terms. The RUJI token generation event was June 19, 2025. A second process for NAMI holders opened on September 22, 2025 with a six-month window and a capped merge supply of 74 million NAMI. The merge period terminated on April 5, 2026, so anyone still holding an unconverted legacy token has missed that window permanently.
Secured Assets THORChain holds native assets such as BTC and ETH in vaults managed by its node operators and issues a corresponding balance, called a Secured Asset, that applications can use. Accounting for these balances is held at the THORChain base layer, not by the applications. Rujira contracts can move Secured Assets between one another but cannot mint or redeem them.
Contracts as constrained accounts Smart contracts on the app layer are described in the documentation as accounts with code, permitted only to perform send and deposit operations. They hold no special privileges that could reach into base layer accounting.
Deployment gating Deployer addresses and contract bytecode must pass a due diligence and whitelisting process before going live on mainnet, so the app layer is not permissionless deployment in the way an ordinary EVM chain is.
Base layer governance controls THORChain's Mimir parameter system lets node operators pause an individual application, pause all applications, or halt Secured Asset deposits and withdrawals per chain, which is an explicit emergency lever rather than a theoretical one.
Applications documented as live include RUJI Trade, an order book decentralized exchange; RUJI AMM, a multi-strategy automated market maker feeding that order book; RUJI Perps, perpetual futures, with the first version built by the Levana team and a more deeply integrated version on the roadmap; RUJI Lending, a money market; RUJI Index, crypto index products; RUJI Swap, cross-chain swaps; and RUJI Liquidations, auctions on liquidated collateral. RUJI Launchpad is listed in the documentation as pending internal review and audit rather than fully live.
RUJI is the fee-switch token for the Rujira application suite. Staking RUJI earns a share of the revenue generated across those applications, and the documentation states that fees are distributed to stakers in USDC rather than in RUJI.
The revenue split is specified in unusual detail. The standard arrangement between core applications and the THORChain base layer is fifty-fifty, covering the cost of base layer security. Each side then redirects one third of its share into protocol-owned liquidity. The effective result documented by the project is 33.33 percent to RUJI stakers, 16.67 percent to the Rujira Ecosystem Fund, 16.67 percent to the THORChain protocol-owned liquidity fund, and 33.33 percent to the THORChain Reserve. Activity that already contributes value to the base layer is not charged for security twice.
On supply, the documentation states a total of 100,000,000 RUJI with no inflation and a fixed cap. RUJI is a THORChain-native asset with the denomination x/ruji rather than an ERC-20, so supply is enforced by THORChain's bank module rather than by a token contract you can inspect on an Ethereum explorer. There is no documented burn mechanism; value accrual is described entirely as fee sharing, and you should not assume a burn that the protocol does not claim.
Documented allocations at the token generation event were 50 percent to Kujira and the merged ecosystem apps, 5 percent to Levana, 7.5 percent to an Ecosystem Fund, 7.5 percent to a Builders Incentive Pool paid out against revenue contribution over four years, 15 percent to Operations, and 15 percent to new investors.
The defining property is that users interact with native assets. Trading BTC on most decentralized venues means trading a wrapped representation issued by a custodian or a bridge, and bridges have been the single largest source of loss in crypto. Rujira inherits THORChain's vault model instead, so the asset you trade is backed by the real thing held by a rotating set of node operators. The second unusual property is that Rujira is a consolidation rather than a launch: six token communities were merged into one asset with one fee stream, which is rare in an industry that usually solves fragmentation by adding another token.
Security comes from THORChain, which runs a network of more than one hundred nodes that continuously rotate the vaults holding user assets. The app layer is deliberately walled off: its contracts cannot mint or burn Secured Assets, cannot reach base layer accounting, and are limited to the same operations an ordinary user account can perform. The project states that its code is open source and audited, with audit reports listed in its documentation alongside contract addresses.
The failure mode is worth understanding precisely. If an application contract is exploited, the attacker can misappropriate Secured Assets held by that application, and the loss falls on the users who interacted with it. The documentation is explicit that this does not create a liability for the THORChain base layer, which continues to process minting and redemption neutrally. Node operators can pause the affected contract.
Rujira is the most serious attempt so far to give THORChain a full application layer, and it is one of the few examples of multiple token communities consolidating into a single asset instead of fragmenting further. If the native-asset model works at scale, it removes the wrapped-asset and bridge risk that has cost users billions. That makes Rujira worth watching regardless of where the token trades.
RUJI is a THORChain-native asset and trades on THORChain-connected venues, including Rujira's own order book exchange. Centralized listings are more limited than for older assets, and availability varies by venue and jurisdiction.
Centralized availability for RUJI is narrower than for large-cap assets, and most liquidity is on-chain. Where centralized listings exist, verify them directly on the venue rather than relying on aggregated listings, and confirm that the venue supports THORChain-native deposits and withdrawals. Venues to check include:
RUJI can be held:
Because RUJI is a THORChain-native denomination rather than an ERC-20, do not send it to an Ethereum or other EVM address. Confirm the receiving network supports THORChain-native assets before any transfer.
