Ark (ARK) is the native token of the ARK Public Network, an open-source Layer 1 blockchain that has been running since March 2017 and is secured by 51 elected validators under a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) model. The project's main pitch has always been simplicity: a TypeScript codebase, a plugin-based node, and tooling meant to let developers launch their own customised blockchains without deep protocol expertise. ARK matters as one of the longest-running DPoS networks still operating, and as a toolkit whose code was designed to be reused by other chains.
This page covers the Ark.io blockchain project (ARK Ecosystem). It is unrelated to other, newer projects that use "ARK" in their names.
Official resources: the ARK website, the developer documentation, the whitepaper (version 2.1.0, September 2019) and the ARK Scan explorer.
According to the whitepaper, the ARK mainnet came online on March 21, 2017, with 125 million ARK created in the genesis block. The genesis delegates that started the network were soon replaced by community-elected delegates, and block rewards were switched on shortly afterwards.
The early project described itself as a globally distributed team (the "ARK Crew") and drew on the design of earlier DPoS projects, including Bitshares, Crypti and Lisk. François-Xavier (FX) Thoorens, a former Lisk core developer, served as CTO in the early period. The whitepaper describes a team with no main office and members across the United States, Europe, Brazil and elsewhere.
The business side is organised as ARK SCIC, a French cooperative society (Société coopérative d'intérêt collectif). The whitepaper calls it the first such structure in crypto and notes that the mainnet itself runs independently of the business entity, which only releases code that delegates choose to run.
Key milestones documented in official sources:
2017 mainnet launch The public network started with a 125 million ARK genesis supply.
Late 2018 Core rewrite ARK released an entirely new TypeScript codebase for the public network, replacing the inherited legacy code.
Mainsail (in development) The ARK GitHub describes Mainsail as "the next evolution of the ARK Core blockchain protocol" with a new consensus engine aimed at better finality, security and reliability. Its repository states it is still in development and intended for testing only.
ARK runs on DPoS. Every ARK holder can vote for one validator (previously called a delegate) from their wallet. Votes are weighted by balance, and the top 51 vote earners become the active forging set. Voting does not move or lock the voter's coins; it only signals support.
Per the whitepaper, the network produces a block every eight seconds. Each round lasts 408 seconds (51 blocks), and the order of validators is randomised each round to make targeted attacks harder. If a validator is offline when its turn comes, the slot is missed and no reward is minted, which rewards uptime.
ARK Core, the node software, is written in TypeScript and split into standalone plugins managed through a plugin container. A node can run as a relay (validating and relaying data) or as a forger (producing blocks). The whitepaper also describes transactions passing verification on a separate process before reaching the transaction pool, and a dynamic fee model where validators compete to accept lower fees.
Supply and issuance. ARK has no hard supply cap. The genesis block created 125 million ARK, and new supply comes only from block rewards of 2 ARK per block. The whitepaper states that, barring missed blocks, this yields at most 7,884,000 ARK per year. Because issuance is a fixed amount rather than a percentage, the inflation rate falls a little every year.
Compared with Lisk, which ARK's early design drew on, ARK kept its own DPoS mainnet and focused on reusable node software and custom chains. Compared with Cosmos and Polkadot, which also target many interoperating chains, ARK is smaller and simpler, relying on its own tooling rather than a shared-security hub or a large validator set. Against high-throughput DPoS chains like TRON, ARK is a much smaller network with a fixed issuance model and a strong emphasis on developer ergonomics rather than scale.
Security comes from the 51 elected validators and the ongoing vote. If a validator misbehaves or goes offline, holders can move their votes and replace it. The randomised forging order each round limits targeted attacks, and the one-vote-per-address rule makes collusion more costly. On the user side, ARK supports Schnorr-based multisignature wallets, and the official site lists hardware support through Ledger Live. Security vulnerabilities can be reported to the team at [email protected], per the ARK Core repository.
ARK is one of the earliest and longest-running DPoS networks, and its focus on a readable TypeScript stack and reusable node software has made it a reference point for developers who want to run their own chain. Its move toward Mainsail and EVM support will determine whether it can stay relevant alongside newer smart contract platforms.
ARK trades on centralized exchanges and instant-swap services. Check that the listing is the native ARK coin on the ARK network before depositing or withdrawing, since similarly named tokens exist.
The official ARK website lists Binance, Upbit, BitMart and Bitvavo among the exchanges that support ARK, along with the swap services Changelly and ChangeNOW. Listings change over time, so confirm availability in your region on the exchange itself.
Keeping ARK in your own wallet lets you take part in validator voting, which is not always possible when coins sit on an exchange.
