Lisk today is not the blockchain it was for most of its history. In August 2026 the project relaunched as a money operations platform for business finance teams, a single workspace where accounts, payments and approvals sit together across multiple legal entities, jurisdictions and currencies, moving funds over both traditional rails such as SEPA, ACH and wire transfer and over stablecoin rails through regulated providers. The operating company is Lisk Ltd., incorporated in the Cayman Islands.
Alongside that pivot, Lisk announced that the Lisk blockchain will shut down on October 31, 2026, and that the Lisk DAO will wind down on the same timeline. LSK is being repositioned as a loyalty token for the new product, with Base becoming its primary network alongside Ethereum. Anyone reading a description of Lisk as an active Layer 2 smart contract platform is reading a description of what it was, not what it is becoming.
Official sources:
Lisk was founded in 2016 by Max Kordek and Oliver Beddows, emerging from a fork of the earlier Crypti project, and it is one of the longest running names in the industry. The original design was a sovereign Layer 1 using delegated proof of stake, paired with a JavaScript software development kit that let teams launch their own sidechains rather than deploy contracts on a shared chain.
That architecture was retired. In December 2023 Lisk announced a move into the Ethereum ecosystem, rebuilding as an OP Stack Layer 2 in partnership with Optimism and using Gelato as a rollup as a service provider. A Lisk Sepolia testnet arrived in February 2024 and the Layer 2 mainnet launched on November 12, 2024, with LSK migrating to an ERC-20 on Ethereum. Less than two years later, the company announced the third phase: winding the chain down and building a business finance product instead.
Two things are worth separating, because they are on different timelines.
The Lisk chain, until October 31, 2026 The Lisk network is an optimistic rollup built on the MIT licensed OP Stack and part of the Optimism Superchain. It is EVM equivalent, so Solidity and Vyper contracts deploy unchanged, it runs roughly two second blocks, and transactions settle to Ethereum, which provides its security. Gas is paid in ETH, following the OP Stack default, not in LSK. Its chain identifier is 1135, and at the time of writing the network is still producing blocks normally.
The new Lisk platform The product side has no chain of its own. Accounts hold balances funded in fiat or in stablecoins such as USDC, Payments executes over bank rails or stablecoin transfers through regulated partners, and a Portfolios module has been announced as coming. Roles, permissions, approval policies and audit trails are the core control layer rather than onchain governance.
LSK is an ERC-20 token. Its canonical contract on Ethereum reports a total supply of exactly 400 million LSK, and the token also exists on Base and, for now, on the Lisk chain itself.
Under the previous model, LSK was the governance and staking token of the Lisk DAO and the unit for ecosystem grant programs. Under the new model it is described as the loyalty token of the platform: businesses are to earn rewards for running money operations on Lisk and for referring other companies, with the ability to receive rewards in LSK and pay fees with it rolling out in phases. Base is stated as the primary network for LSK alongside Ethereum.
The wind down proposal includes burning 100 million LSK from the DAO treasury, which would take total supply from 400 million to 300 million, and making staking penalty free and flexible before governance infrastructure is discontinued. Treat the burn as proposed rather than completed. An earlier attempt in July 2025 drew overwhelming approval from those who voted but failed to reach quorum, and the Ethereum contract still reports the full 400 million total supply.
Lisk is one of very few projects from the 2016 cohort to publicly retire its own chain and redirect a decade of brand equity and treasury into a conventional software business. Whether that is admirable discipline or an admission of failure depends on your view, but it is unusual and it is transparent. The new product's distinguishing claim is multi rail design: fiat and stablecoin payments handled inside one approval and audit workflow rather than as two separate systems bolted together.
While it remains live, the Lisk chain is architecturally close to other OP Stack Superchain members, sharing their sequencer model, ETH denominated gas and Ethereum settlement. The meaningful difference is directional rather than technical: Superchain peers such as Optimism and Base are expanding, and Lisk is exiting. Developers and applications on the Lisk chain have been pointed toward Celo as a migration target. As a token, LSK is also moving away from the usual Layer 2 pattern, since it never served as gas and is now framed as a loyalty asset in a finance product rather than as a network asset.
The Lisk chain inherits security from Ethereum as an optimistic rollup: transaction data is posted to Ethereum and withdrawals pass through a challenge window, which is why bridging out is documented as taking at least seven days. Like most rollups at this stage, it depends on a centrally operated sequencer and on upgrade keys held by the operator, which is a trust assumption worth understanding.
Security for the new platform is not chain security at all. It rests on the operational controls the product describes, roles, permissions, approval policies and audit trails, and on the regulated payment providers behind the fiat and stablecoin rails.
Lisk is a useful case study in what happens when a long lived network concludes that its chain is not the asset. For holders and builders, the practical significance is straightforward: a fixed shutdown date, a required migration, and a token whose meaning changes from network governance to product loyalty. Understanding which phase a piece of information describes matters more here than with almost any other asset of comparable age.
LSK is listed on centralized exchanges and is available onchain as an ERC-20 on Ethereum and on Base. Availability, pairs and eligibility vary by jurisdiction and by platform.
LSK has commonly been available on venues such as:
Pairs are typically quoted against USDT or fiat where supported.
If you hold LSK on the Lisk chain, bridge it to Ethereum before the shutdown date. Always confirm the network and contract address before a deposit or withdrawal, since LSK exists on more than one chain.
