Quai Network is a proof-of-work Layer 1 that spreads execution across a hierarchy of merge-mined blockchains rather than running everything on one chain. Transactions execute on zone chains, zones are coordinated by region chains, and regions are coordinated by a single prime chain. Because all three levels are merge-mined, one mining hash can satisfy several chains at once.
Quai also runs two native assets instead of one. QUAI is the account-based, EVM-programmable token used for gas and smart contracts. Qi is a separate UTXO-based token whose issuance is tied to mining difficulty, which anchors it to the cost of energy rather than to posted collateral.
Mainnet went live on February 4, 2025. A live JSON-RPC check against the public Cyprus-1 endpoint on September 11, 2026 returned chain ID 9 and a block height above ten million, so the launch shard has been producing blocks continuously since then.

Quai is built by Dominant Strategies, an engineering firm whose work traces back to earlier hardware and blockchain scalability research at GridPlus and to academic collaboration at the University of Texas at Austin. The consensus paper that gives the protocol its name, "POEM: Proof of Entropy Minima," was published by Karl Kreder and Shreekara Shastry in March 2023.
Research began in 2018 and moved through public testnets named Garden, Orchard and Colosseum before mainnet. Early backers named by the project include Polychain Capital and Alumni Ventures, and the token generation event followed mainnet in early February 2025.
Quai is usually explained through four mechanisms.
Proof-of-Entropy-Minima consensus PoEM changes how chain weight is measured. Instead of counting blocks, it weighs each block by the entropy its hash actually removed, which the paper argues lowers the orphan rate and shortens the time before a block can be treated as settled.
Prime, region and zone hierarchy One prime chain coordinates region chains, which coordinate the zone chains where transactions execute. Quai documentation gives roughly 20 second prime, 10 second region and 5 second zone block times for an illustrative configuration of two regions with two zones each, and describes the design as expanding toward nine zones across the Cyprus, Paxos and Hydra regions as demand grows. Cyprus-1 is the zone that has been live since launch.
Internal merged mining and coincident blocks All Quai chains use ProgPoW, a GPU-oriented algorithm. A miner checks one solution against three different difficulty thresholds, so the same work can seal a zone, region and prime block at once. A solution that clears more than one threshold produces a coincident block, and those shared blocks are what link the shards together without an external bridge operator.
SOAP, the external mining subsidy The Subsidized Open-market Acquisition Protocol lets hardware pointed at other proof-of-work algorithms, including SHA-256d, Scrypt and KawPoW, submit work to Quai. The parent-chain reward is routed to a protocol address instead of to the miner, sold, and used to buy QUAI on the open market, which is then burned or streamed to users who lock QUAI. SOAP reached Quai mainnet in December 2025.
QUAI pays gas, deploys and calls smart contracts, moves value on the account-based ledger, and converts into Qi at the prevailing mining reward ratio. Quai documentation states that anyone can perform that conversion, not only miners.
Supply is not fixed by a hard protocol cap. The Singularity Fork activated at prime block 1,530,500 on March 19, 2026 and permanently skipped roughly 1.67 billion QUAI of scheduled genesis unlocks, cutting future unlocks from 2,055,088,772 QUAI to 387,928,788 QUAI and leaving a post-fork vested baseline near 1,332,840,016 QUAI. Project documentation describes the result as a soft cap in the region of 1.4 billion tokens, reached only if SOAP burns fully offset mining emissions. Treat that as a modeled outcome rather than a coded maximum: mining issuance continues, and Qi is explicitly uncapped and expands with demand.
Most scaling work of the last several years has assumed proof of stake or rollups. Quai is unusual for trying to shard a proof-of-work chain directly, using merged mining as the coordination primitive so that adding shards does not split security across separate hash markets. The dual-ledger design is also unusual: an EVM account ledger and a UTXO ledger live on the same chains, with a protocol-defined conversion rate between them. SOAP is the third distinguishing piece, since conventional proof-of-work economics push miners to sell issuance to cover power bills and SOAP tries to invert part of that.
Security rests on cumulative proof of work rather than bonded stake. Merged mining means a single hash contributes weight at several levels of the hierarchy at once, so a shard is not defended only by the hashrate that chose it. ProgPoW is used to keep mining accessible to commodity GPUs, and SOAP widens the pool of contributing hardware to rigs built for other algorithms.
The usual proof-of-work caveats apply. Safety depends on how widely hashrate is distributed, on the correctness of the client implementation, and on how much total work a chain has accumulated relative to the value it carries.
Quai is one of the few serious attempts to answer the scaling question without leaving proof of work behind. Whether or not this design wins, the combination of entropy-weighted consensus, merge-mined shards and hashrate-funded buybacks is a distinct line of research with a live mainnet, an open client and a public explorer anyone can inspect.
QUAI trades on centralized exchanges, mostly against USDT. It can also be mined directly, an entry path most newer Layer 1 tokens do not offer. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction, so confirm on the venue's own asset page.
QUAI has been listed on venues including:
After purchase, QUAI can be held on an exchange, which is custodial, or in a Quai-compatible non-custodial wallet that understands the network's address sharding, since addresses are assigned to zones by prefix. Users who want to verify the chain themselves can run a go-quai node.
Qi uses the UTXO ledger and a different address form from QUAI. Always confirm which ledger and which zone an address belongs to before sending funds.
