OpenGradient is a decentralized network for verifiable AI inference. Rather than being a general purpose blockchain that happens to run models, it positions itself as an AI coprocessor: applications, smart contracts, and autonomous agents send inference requests to a network of GPU and trusted execution environment nodes, and every result carries a proof that validators check before it settles onchain.
The distinction that matters is between running a model and proving you ran it. Calling a hosted model API gives you an answer you have to trust, while OpenGradient's design returns an answer plus evidence, so a contract elsewhere can act on the output without trusting the operator who produced it. OPG is the network's token, launched on 21 April 2026 as an ERC-20 on Base.
Official sources:
OpenGradient publishes its work through OpenGradient Labs and the OpenGradient Foundation. The project has raised roughly $9.5 million and lists backers including a16z and Coinbase Ventures, along with participation in NVIDIA's Inception program, and names advisers including Illia Polosukhin, Balaji Srinivasan, and Sandeep Nailwal.
Because the project is recent, it is worth being precise about what has shipped. The technical whitepaper was published in March 2026, and the OPG token generated on 21 April 2026 on Base through an event co-hosted by Binance Wallet and PancakeSwap, gated through Binance Alpha rather than sold publicly. The network's own chain runs as a testnet, with the production mainnet described by the project as a high priority upcoming milestone at which verifiable inferences settle on that chain and OPG pays protocol level transaction fees. In the meantime, inference payments settle on Base. The token and the payment rail are live; the sovereign chain is not yet in production.
The architecture is called Hybrid AI Compute Architecture, and its central idea is that AI workloads are too heterogeneous for a uniform validator set. Running a large language model requires very different hardware from verifying a signature, so the network separates the two.
The fast path handles inference A request goes directly from the caller to an inference node. There is no block confirmation, no validator voting, and no consensus delay in this path, so latency is comparable to a centralized API.
The verification path handles settlement After inference completes, the node produces a proof: a trusted execution environment attestation, a zero knowledge machine learning proof, or a signed result, depending on the assurance level requested. That proof is submitted to full nodes and verified during the next consensus round using CometBFT before it is committed.
For onchain callers, OpenGradient exposes inference through a Solidity interface called OGInference, implemented as a custom precompile. Precompiles act as a window from the EVM into the underlying Cosmos SDK modules, so a contract can request a model result the same way it would call any other contract.
OPG has a fixed supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens, confirmed by reading the contract on Base, and the project states that no additional tokens will ever be minted. The published allocation is 40 percent to ecosystem, 15 percent to the foundation, 15 percent to core contributors, 10 percent to investors and advisers, 10 percent to staking rewards, 6 percent to liquidity and launch, and 4 percent to the airdrop, with contributor and investor tranches carrying a twelve month cliff and thirty six months of linear vesting.
The token has five documented functions:
Once the OpenGradient mainnet is live, OPG is also intended to pay transaction fees on that chain.
The verification spectrum is the clearest differentiator. Rather than forcing one proof system on every workload, the network lets a caller choose. Enclave attestation adds close to no overhead and proves the hardware was not tampered with. Zero knowledge machine learning gives mathematical certainty that a specific model produced a specific output, at an overhead the project describes as three to four orders of magnitude. Vanilla verification is signature only with zero overhead. A trading contract and a chat application do not need the same guarantee, and this lets each pay for what it needs.
The second differentiator is keeping the blockchain off the critical path, since many onchain AI designs make every inference wait for consensus. The third is treating the model registry as infrastructure, with a permissionless Model Hub and creator compensation enforced at the payment layer.
Compared with decentralized GPU marketplaces, OpenGradient is not primarily selling raw compute. It sells verified results, and the proof is the product. Compared with networks that incentivize model training through competition, it focuses on serving and verifying existing models rather than producing new ones. Compared with oracle networks, the object being attested is a computation the network performed rather than an external price or event. And compared with AI chains that require applications to migrate onto them, OpenGradient is designed to be called from elsewhere, since payments already settle on Base.
Security is layered. Consensus uses CometBFT, with full nodes verifying every submitted proof before committing it, and validators are backed by delegated OPG so verification is economically bonded. Trusted execution environments protect both inference and external data fetching, and their attestations are checked rather than assumed. Zero knowledge proofs are available where hardware trust is not acceptable, and model and proof blobs live in decentralized storage with onchain references so an operator cannot silently swap a model. The honest caveat is that enclaves depend on hardware vendor security, which is why the verification method is a choice with governance over approved hardware.
If AI systems are going to make decisions that move money onchain, someone has to answer how a contract knows the model actually ran and actually produced that output. OpenGradient is one of the more concrete attempts to answer it, and its willingness to offer a spectrum of assurance levels rather than a single ideological one is a practical stance. Whether it succeeds depends on shipping mainnet and finding applications that genuinely need proofs.
OPG launched on Base and trades on decentralized exchanges there, including PancakeSwap, as well as on a growing set of centralized venues since its April 2026 debut. Bridged representations also exist on BNB Chain and Mantle. Because the asset is recent, listings change quickly, so verify current support with the venue and check the contract address before trading.
OPG has appeared on venues including:
Availability varies by region, and support for a newly launched token can change on short notice.
After purchase, OPG can be held on an exchange, which is custodial, in any EVM compatible non custodial wallet configured for Base, behind a hardware wallet paired with a compatible interface, or delegated to a validator once network staking is available to you. Confirm which chain your OPG sits on before transferring, because the Base token, the BNB Chain representation, and the Mantle representation are separate deployments.
