Maverick Protocol is a decentralized exchange built around an automated market maker that moves liquidity for you. In most concentrated-liquidity AMMs, a liquidity provider picks a price range and then has to come back and re-place it whenever the market moves. Maverick's AMM shifts a provider's liquidity automatically, inside the smart contract, so the position keeps following price without the provider paying gas to rebalance.
MAV is the protocol's governance token. It is staked into a voting-escrow contract to produce veMAV, a non-transferable balance carrying voting power over governance and over where liquidity incentives are directed.
The distinguishing feature is not lower fees or a new curve. It is that liquidity concentration is automated on-chain, and the LP chooses which direction that automation should follow.
Official sources:
Maverick Protocol raised roughly 18 million dollars across three rounds, with backers including Founders Fund, Pantera Capital, Coinbase Ventures, Binance Labs, Circle Ventures, and Gemini. Its public materials emphasize the protocol and the AMM design rather than individual founders, and detailed founder biographies are not prominently documented on the official site.
The deployment timeline is clearer. Maverick AMM launched on Ethereum mainnet in March 2023, on zkSync Era in April 2023, and on BNB Chain in June 2023. MAV was distributed in part through Binance Launchpool, farming from June 14 to July 8, 2023. Maverick V2 followed with a redesigned incentive system built around veMAV.
Maverick's AMM divides a pool's price range into discrete bins. Only the bin holding the pool's live trading price, called the active bin, is actually trading. What makes Maverick different from other binned or ranged AMMs is what happens when price leaves a bin.
Bins and the active bin Liquidity sits in bins of a configured width. As trades push price out of the active bin, the next bin becomes active. Bin width and fee tier are set per pool.
Movement modes An LP chooses one of four modes when depositing. Mode Right follows price only when it moves up for the base asset. Mode Left follows price only when it moves down. Mode Both follows price in either direction. Mode Static does not move at all and behaves like a conventional ranged position.
Native rebalancing, free to the LP All liquidity shifting is performed by the AMM contract itself, so an LP using a movement mode never pays gas to move their own liquidity. Movement follows the pool's time-weighted average price rather than instantaneous spot, which limits how easily one trade can drag positions around.
Custom distributions in Mode Static Mode Static offers Exponential, Flat, and Single Bin distributions, each editable bin by bin.
MAV is used for:
veMAV scales with both the amount staked and the duration. The maximum staking period is four years, the minimum is one week, and the multiplier grows by 1.5 times per additional year of lock. Staked MAV cannot be withdrawn before the lock ends, and claiming it burns the matching veMAV. Maverick uses the Origin voting-escrow contract, which its documentation notes was audited by OpenZeppelin.
MAV has a documented maximum supply of 2,000,000,000 tokens. The published allocation was liquidity mining and airdrops 30.85 percent, team 19 percent, investors 18 percent, public goods fund 16.5 percent, foundation and treasury 10 percent, advisors 4.15 percent, and Binance Launchpool 1.5 percent, the last equal to 30,000,000 MAV.
One practical detail that confuses supply readings: MAV is deployed as an omnichain token using LayerZero. A live read of the Ethereum contract shows LayerZero trusted-remote machinery rather than a plain standalone ERC-20, and separate MAV contracts exist on BNB Chain, Base, and zkSync Era. Because tokens move between these deployments, the amount recorded on any one chain is only a slice of the whole, and no single chain's figure should be read as the protocol-wide number.
Directional liquidity comes first. Mode Right and Mode Left let an LP express a view on which way a pair is going and rebalance only in that direction, keeping them primarily exposed to one asset. That is closer to an automated strategy than to passive market making.
Second, rebalancing is a protocol function, not a keeper service. There is no bot the LP has to run and no gas the LP pays to keep a position near price.
Third, in the veFlywheel only MAV incentives trigger matching emissions. Maverick states this is deliberate: matching in a single known token lets the contract compute matches on-chain without an external oracle valuing arbitrary reward tokens.
Security rests on the smart contracts and on the chains Maverick deploys to. Checkable points:
Maverick's contribution is a concrete answer to a real cost in concentrated liquidity: the labor and gas of keeping a position near price. By moving that work into the pool contract and letting the LP pick a direction, it turned range management into a configuration choice. Matching third-party rewards rather than replacing them with protocol emissions is also a notable variation on the vote-escrow model most DEXs adopted.
MAV is available on centralized exchanges and, being an omnichain token, on decentralized exchanges across the chains where it is deployed. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction and venue.
MAV has been available on venues including:
Common pairs include MAV/USDT where supported.
MAV can be held:
Before transferring, confirm which chain your MAV is on. The contract address differs per chain, and sending to the wrong network is not recoverable by the protocol.
