MNGO is the governance token of Mango Markets, a decentralized trading venue on Solana that combined lending, borrowing, spot margin trading and perpetual futures in one cross-margined account. Mango was one of the best-known DeFi exchanges on Solana, and it is also one of the most discussed case studies in DeFi risk: a 2022 exploit, an SEC settlement that required the DAO to destroy its MNGO, and a January 2025 announcement that the Mango v4 platform was winding down. Anyone looking at MNGO today should read it as the token of a protocol that has announced its own shutdown, not of an active, growing exchange.
Mango Markets described itself in its documentation as "a single venue to lend, borrow, swap, and leverage-trade crypto assets through a powerful risk engine." Its core features were:
Spot margin trading ran on the OpenBook order book on Solana, while perpetual futures traded on Mango's own on-chain order book. The protocol was governed by MNGO holders through the Mango DAO, and its code was published openly by the Blockworks Foundation on GitHub.
The token exists as an SPL token on Solana (mint MangoCzJ36AjZyKwVj3VnYU4GTonjfVEnJmvvWaxLac), with a bridged representation on Neon EVM.
Mango's code, including the mango-v4 program, is maintained under the Blockworks Foundation GitHub organization. CoinDesk has reported that this Blockworks Foundation has no relation to the Blockworks news business. Maximilian Schneider has been reported as a co-founder.
Key events, as reported by the named sources:
2022 exploit. CoinDesk reported that Avraham Eisenberg drained more than $110 million worth of tokens from the exchange in 2022 by pushing up the price of MNGO and borrowing against the inflated collateral. A jury convicted him in 2024; in May 2025 CoinDesk reported that U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian overturned those convictions, finding insufficient evidence that he made false representations to the platform.
Version 4 and audits. Mango's documentation states that OtterSec completed an audit of Mango v4 version v0.7.0 on 26 April 2023, and that the DAO engaged OtterSec to audit releases before deployment starting with v0.17.0.
SEC and CFTC settlements (September 2024). CoinDesk reported that Mango DAO, Mango Labs LLC and the Blockworks Foundation agreed to settle SEC allegations that MNGO was an unregistered security and that the entities offered unregistered broker services, paying $700,000 in total, subject to court approval, without admitting or denying the charges. The entities agreed to destroy their MNGO tokens and ask exchanges to stop trading the token. The DAO also voted on a separate settlement with the CFTC.
Wind-down (January 2025). The Block reported that on 11 January 2025 the team announced "Mango v4 & Boost are winding down", with governance proposals changing interest rates and collateral settings so that most borrowing would become economically unviable. The Block also reported lawsuits among co-founders and contributors in late 2024 over locked MNGO bought from the FTX estate.
Mango v4 is a Solana program (the repository lists mainnet program ID 4MangoMjqJ2firMokCjjGgoK8d4MXcrgL7XJaL3w6fVg). Each user account holds deposits, borrows and perpetual positions together, and a single "health" number decides what the account may do:
Health is a weighted sum of assets minus liabilities, where each token has its own asset and liability weights. For opening positions, Mango values assets at the lower of the oracle price and a slow-moving "stable price", and liabilities at the higher of the two. The stable price was introduced so that a sudden oracle jump, including one caused by an attack, only slowly increases the leverage an account can take. Oracle prices came from Pyth and Switchboard.
MNGO was designed as the governance token of Mango Markets. The original litepaper said the token would govern the protocol, with most of the supply held in the DAO treasury. Holders voted on listings, risk parameters and treasury use through the Mango DAO.
Under the SEC settlement, the DAO and related entities agreed to destroy the MNGO they held and to ask exchanges to delist the token. With the platform winding down, MNGO's practical governance role is limited to whatever the DAO still decides about remaining funds and contracts.
Mango's distinctive idea was a unified cross-margin account on a fast, low-fee chain: one balance served as collateral for spot borrowing and perpetual futures at the same time. Its public risk documentation (health formulas, stable price, scaled asset weights that fall as a token's total deposits grow) was unusually detailed for a DeFi exchange. The 2022 exploit, which the stable-price mechanism in v4 was designed to make harder, also made Mango a reference point for oracle-manipulation risk.
Mango is an application, not a chain. Compared with other Solana trading protocols, Drift is another Solana perpetuals and margin protocol, while Jupiter focuses on swap routing and its own perpetuals venue. On other chains, dYdX runs an order-book perpetuals exchange on its own chain and GMX uses pooled liquidity instead of an order book. The main difference today is status: Mango announced a wind-down in January 2025.
Historically, Mango was used to:
After the wind-down proposals, borrowing was intentionally made uneconomic, so these uses are largely historical.
Mango's contracts run on Solana and are secured by that network's validators. At the protocol level, Mango relied on audits (OtterSec reports are published in the mango-v4 repository), oracle freshness checks that restrict actions on tokens whose price feed has stopped updating, the stable-price mechanism, deposit limits via scaled weights, liquidations, and an insurance fund described in its documentation. Governance changes went through the Mango DAO.
Mango matters mainly as a lesson. It showed that a fully on-chain, cross-margined exchange could run on Solana, and it showed how oracle and collateral design can fail under manipulation. Its settlements are also among the clearest examples of U.S. regulators treating a DAO governance token as a security.
Following the SEC settlement, the DAO and related entities agreed to ask exchanges to stop trading MNGO. Any remaining trading would take place on decentralized venues on Solana. Confirm the mint address MangoCzJ36AjZyKwVj3VnYU4GTonjfVEnJmvvWaxLac on Solscan before any transaction.
MNGO is an SPL token, so any Solana wallet that supports SPL tokens can hold it, including hardware wallets through compatible Solana software wallets. Keep your seed phrase offline and verify the mint address, since look-alike tokens exist.
