Circle xStock (CRCLX) is a tokenized stock giving onchain exposure to shares of Circle Internet Group, Inc., the company behind the USDC and EURC stablecoins, which listed on the New York Stock Exchange as CRCL in June 2025. It belongs to the xStocks line built by Backed Finance AG, and each token is collateralized one to one by a real share held with a regulated custodian. Legally it is not a share: the documentation classifies each xStock as a bearer debt instrument in the form of a tracker certificate, tracking the equity's economic value without conferring voting rights.

Circle went public on the NYSE on 5 June 2025 after pricing an upsized offering at 31 dollars per share. The token comes from Backed Finance AG, whose company page says the firm was started in 2021 by co-founders Adam Levi, Roberto Klein and Yehonatan Goldman. Backed's published timeline records an EU approved prospectus, first products across 2023 and 2024, and the xStocks brand rolling out in 2025 with Kraken, Bybit and Solana. Circle xStock followed Circle's listing.
In the primary layer, a client onboarded through KYC and AML checks issues or redeems directly with the issuer, using stablecoins or the underlying equity through an in kind flow called xPort, on a 24/5 schedule aligned with the US equity market. In the secondary layer the token is permissionless and trades on exchanges and DeFi venues around the clock.
Corporate actions use onchain rebasing through what the docs call the multiplier. Each xStock launches at 1.0. Dividends are received by the custodian, reinvested into more shares net of withholding tax, and the multiplier rises so balances reflect the larger claim. Splits move it proportionally, with no action from holders, and it activates at 00:30 UTC the day after the ex date.
CRCLX is not a governance or gas token and accrues no protocol fees. The documentation states that the token is the certificate and that holding it constitutes holding the instrument, grounding that in the Swiss DLT Act treatment of ledger records as evidence of title. Practically it moves between wallets and chains, is held fractionally, can be posted as lending collateral or paired in liquidity pools, and settles at any hour. Redemption for cash value or the underlying is available to onboarded clients.
It offers onchain exposure to the largest listed pure play stablecoin issuer, so the equity of the company behind USDC trades as a token on the same networks USDC circulates on. The product is also unusual in publishing its legal machinery: the prospectus route through the Liechtenstein Financial Market Authority, the Jersey issuing vehicle, the segregation rules and the Security Agent arrangement are documented rather than left implicit.
The nearest comparison is another tokenized Circle share issued under a different structure. What separates providers is the issuing entity and its regulator, the custody arrangement, whether the token is permissionless or transfer restricted, which chains it is native on, and how corporate actions are processed. xStocks tokens are freely transferable rather than whitelist gated, native on several chains rather than bridged from one, and rebase balances instead of paying cash dividends. Against a synthetic or oracle priced derivative, a real share sits in custody and can be redeemed.
Collateral is held with regulated custodians and brokers asset by asset, in dedicated sub accounts, with no commingling, so tokens referencing one equity are backed solely by that equity. Those accounts sit under a three party account control agreement with an independent Security Agent, who may assume control if holder rights defined in the prospectus are not upheld and, on issuer default, liquidate the collateral and distribute proceeds. Technically the token is an ordinary onchain asset secured by whichever network it sits on.
Tokenized equities test whether public blockchains can carry regulated financial instruments rather than only crypto native assets. CRCLX is a useful case because the legal structure is explicit, corporate action handling is specified in advance, and the underlying company is one crypto users already understand.
CRCLX trades on centralized exchanges that have integrated the xStocks line and on decentralized venues across the chains where it is issued. The ecosystem page on the official site lists current exchange, wallet and DeFi integrations. Access is restricted by jurisdiction, so confirm eligibility first, and verify the contract address against issuer documentation, because tokenized equity tickers attract imitation tokens.
CRCLX is a standard token on each network it is issued on: any SPL compatible wallet on Solana, any compatible wallet on the EVM networks. Hardware wallets suit larger positions, and exchange custody is convenient for trading but means relying on that venue. Self custody preserves the onchain claim but does not grant primary redemption, which requires onboarding with the issuer.
