SP500 xStock is a tokenized tracker certificate giving onchain exposure to the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, the State Street fund tracking the S&P 500 index. Each token is collateralized 1:1 by shares of that ETF held with a regulated custodian, and is issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited under the xStocks brand. It is issued natively on Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum, BNB Smart Chain, Mantle, Ink and TON, so it can be self-custodied and used in DeFi. It conveys no shareholder rights.

SPYX is a product, so its history is the issuer's. Backed Finance AG was founded in 2021 by Adam Levi, Yehonatan Goldman and Roberto Klein, who previously worked together at DAOstack. It first tokenized bonds and ETFs as bTokens under a Swiss legal wrapper, then launched xStocks for US equities and ETFs in mid-2025 with partners including Kraken, Bybit and Solana. In December 2025 Kraken announced an agreement to acquire Backed.
An eligible participant delivers cash or stablecoins, the issuer buys matching SPY shares through a regulated broker, those shares go to a custodian, and an equivalent amount of SPYX is minted. Redemption reverses the flow. Issuance and redemption run 24/5, aligned with US market hours, while the token trades around the clock. Dividends and splits are handled by an onchain rebasing mechanism that keeps each holder at 1:1 exposure.
SPYX is not a governance or utility token and pays no staking rewards. It represents a claim to the value of the underlying ETF in a permissionless, transferable form. Being a standard token, it is also composable, and can serve as lending collateral or a pool asset.
Most tokenized equity products restrict transfers at the contract level or exist only inside one exchange. SPYX is freely transferable and self-custodial, so it can leave the venue where it was bought. It also targets a broad index rather than a single company, and native multi-chain issuance avoids the usual bridging risk.
The main differences are legal form and distribution. xStocks are certificates tracking an underlying, governed by Swiss law and issued under a base prospectus approved in Liechtenstein by the FMA, with a bankruptcy-remote issuer and no commingling between products. Competing products are often permissioned securities only whitelisted wallets may hold, or fund share classes rather than tracker certificates.
Onchain, the contracts are audited standard ERC-20 and SPL implementations inheriting their networks' security. Offchain, protection comes from the legal structure: 1:1 collateralization asset by asset, segregated custody under an Account Control Agreement, an independent Security Agent acting for holders, and public proof of reserves.
SPYX carries index market risk plus risks a traditional ETF does not. Holders depend on the issuer, custodian and broker performing correctly, and a failure there is not something the blockchain can fix. Redemption at the issuer is limited to onboarded participants, so most holders rely on secondary liquidity, which can be thin outside US market hours and can trade away from the underlying value. The token is not offered to US persons, and regulatory treatment of tokenized securities is still evolving.
Index exposure is the most common building block in traditional investing, and SPYX tests whether it works onchain without permissioned transfer restrictions. If tokenized equities become a durable category, a composable S&P 500 instrument is likely to be one of its anchor assets.
SPYX is listed on centralized exchanges that integrated the xStocks format, including Kraken, Bybit and OKX, and trades on decentralized venues on Solana and its EVM chains. Availability depends on where you live. Confirm the contract address against the issuer's product page before trading on a decentralized exchange.
Any wallet supporting the relevant chain will hold SPYX: SPL-compatible wallets on Solana, and ERC-20 compatible wallets on the EVM deployments. Hardware wallets are safer for larger positions. Self-custody gives no direct claim on the custodian, so keep a record of how you acquired the token.
