Audius is a music streaming platform whose catalog, accounts and payouts live on a decentralized network rather than inside a single company's database. Artists upload directly, listeners stream for free, and the infrastructure that stores and serves the audio is run by independent operators who stake tokens to participate.
AUDIO is the token that secures and governs that network. It is staked by node operators and their delegators, it carries governance votes, and it unlocks artist tooling on the platform.
Since late 2025 the underlying network has been separated from the consumer app and renamed the Open Audio Protocol. Audius remains the music app; the Open Audio Protocol is the shared music database and infrastructure that the app and other builders sit on top of. AUDIO continues to secure it.

Audius was founded in 2018 by Roneil Rumburg and Forrest Browning, with backing from investors including Coinbase Ventures, Multicoin Capital and Pantera Capital. The product launched publicly in 2019 and the AUDIO token followed in 2020.
The most consequential recent change is architectural. Version 1.0 of the infrastructure was announced on October 8, 2025 under the Open Audio Protocol name, with the network rebrand completing into January 2026. Governance Proposal 156 registered a new validator node type, and Proposal 157 covered validator 1.0.0, artist coins and Open Audio Protocol tokenomics. Artist Coins, described by the team as the last missing piece of the original 2020 whitepaper, launched alongside the 1.0 release.
Development remains active. The AudiusProject/apps and AudiusProject/api repositories, and the OpenAudio organization repositories including go-openaudio, staking and solana-programs, were all receiving commits in September 2026.
One node type instead of two The original design split infrastructure into discovery nodes, which indexed on-chain data and served queries, and content nodes, which stored and delivered audio. Version 1.0 consolidated both into a single validator node, a significant simplification for anyone running infrastructure.
Inside a validator A validator runs Core, a coordination and networking layer built on CometBFT that keeps nodes in sync; Mediorum, the storage system that handles uploads, transcoding and content addressing; and SLA proofs, a mutual monitoring mechanism through which nodes verify each other's service commitments and can trigger slashing.
Staking and registration on Ethereum Node registration and the staking contracts live on Ethereum. A validator bonds a minimum of 200,000 AUDIO, up to a maximum of 15,000,000 AUDIO per node. Token holders who do not want to run hardware can delegate to a validator instead, and validators set their own fee percentage and minimum delegation.
Rewards Stakers share a 7 percent annual protocol reward rate, distributed proportionally across staked tokens and claimable weekly through a permissionless process. Slashed tokens are burned.
Solana for the fast path Solana carries much of the high-frequency activity, including the artist coin layer, while Ethereum holds registration, staking and governance. AUDIO therefore exists as an ERC-20 on Ethereum and as an SPL token on Solana.

AUDIO is not hard capped. A live read of the Ethereum token contract at 0x18aaa7115705e8be94bffebde57af9bfc265b998 in September 2026 shows an upgradeable proxy whose implementation exposes mint, burn, burnFrom, pause and permit functions, consistent with a token whose supply grows as staking rewards are issued and shrinks when slashed stake is destroyed. Supply policy is therefore set by governance and the reward rate rather than by an immutable cap.
Audius is one of very few crypto projects with a genuine consumer product that non-crypto users actually use for its stated purpose. A listener can stream without a wallet, and an artist can upload without understanding anything about staking. The token economy sits behind the product rather than in front of it.
The 1.0 rebuild is notable for going in the unusual direction of reducing surface area. Merging two node types into one, and moving coordination onto a faster BFT consensus, is maintenance work that makes the network cheaper to run rather than a feature launch. Projects that reach that stage of their life and simplify rather than accumulate are rare.
Audius is the clearest long-running test of whether a decentralized network can run a consumer media product that competes on experience rather than ideology. It has kept the app usable, kept the protocol open, and in 2025 and 2026 chose to simplify its infrastructure and open the underlying database to other builders. Whatever happens to the token, that is a useful datapoint for the whole category.
AUDIO trades on centralized exchanges and on decentralized venues on both Ethereum and Solana. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction. Decide deliberately which version you want, because the ERC-20 and the SPL token are separate assets that require bridging to move between chains.
