FTX Token (FTT) was the exchange token of FTX, a cryptocurrency derivatives exchange founded in 2019. It gave holders trading fee discounts and could be used as collateral on the exchange, and FTX said it would buy and burn FTT with a share of its fees. FTX collapsed in November 2022 and entered US Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, so the exchange that gave FTT its utility no longer operates. FTT still exists as a token on several blockchains, but it has no functioning platform behind it.
FTT was issued by FTX as the "backbone of the growing FTX ecosystem," in the words of the exchange's own FTT FAQ (archived, last updated June 11, 2022). Like BNB for Binance or OKB for OKX, it was a token whose value proposition was tied to activity on one centralized exchange.
Today the domain ftx.com redirects to claims.ftx.com, a customer claims portal, rather than to a trading platform.
FTX was founded in May 2019 by Sam Bankman-Fried and Gary Wang, according to the Wikipedia article on FTX. The exchange grew out of Alameda Research, a trading firm Bankman-Fried co-founded in 2017.
Key events, as reported by the sources cited:
FTT was never the native coin of its own blockchain. It is a token issued on existing chains, and the main contract is an ERC-20 on Ethereum at 0x50d1c9771902476076ecfc8b2a83ad6b9355a4c9. A token also exists on Solana (solscan).
While FTX operated, the token's mechanics were set by the exchange, not by a smart contract: fee discounts, collateral rules and the burn program were all run by FTX's own systems.
The archived FAQ listed these utilities while FTX operated:
All of these depended on FTX running. With the exchange closed, none of them function today, and the token's documented utility is effectively gone.
FTT is a well-documented example of concentration in an exchange token. The CoinDesk report on Alameda's FTT holdings preceded the withdrawal surge at FTX, and the SEC's release referred to "FTX-affiliated tokens" in describing the risk it alleged. During the crisis, Binance's CEO wrote that exchanges should avoid using FTT as collateral (as reported by Wikipedia).
Compared with exchange tokens such as BNB, OKB, Cronos (CRO), KuCoin Token (KCS) or Bitget Token (BGB), FTT differs in the most important way: its issuing exchange is in bankruptcy and offers no services. BNB and CRO also power their own blockchains, while FTT never had a chain of its own.
Historically: fee discounts, collateral, staking and exposure to FTX's growth. Today the token has no documented product use on an operating platform. Its remaining relevance is historical, and as a traded asset on whatever venues still list it.
FTT's ledger security comes from the host chains (Ethereum proof of stake for the ERC-20 version, Solana for the SPL version). Holding the token on-chain is secured by those networks, but nothing about the token itself gives holders a claim on FTX assets. How FTT is treated in the bankruptcy plan is a matter for the plan documents, which should be read directly.
FTT is a reference case for anyone evaluating an exchange token: its value rested on a single company, and when that company failed the token's utility disappeared. Understanding FTT helps readers ask sharper questions about any token whose worth depends on one centralized operator.
FTT may still trade on some centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum and Solana, but listings have changed since 2022. Check a venue's current market list, and confirm you are trading the original contract rather than a copy.
The Ethereum version can be held in any ERC-20 wallet (for example MetaMask or a hardware wallet such as Ledger), and the Solana version in Solana wallets such as Phantom or Solflare. Holding FTT in a wallet does not create or affect an FTX bankruptcy claim.
