Purr is a cat themed community token that lives natively on the Hyperliquid layer 1 blockchain rather than as a smart contract on a general purpose chain. It was the first token deployed under HIP-1, Hyperliquid's native token standard, and Hyperliquid announced that spot trading for PURR went live in April 2024. The project's own description states there was no sale and no planned utility for PURR, with a maximum supply of 1 billion units. PURR is also represented on HyperEVM, so it can be held as a native L1 spot balance or as an EVM token.
Official resources:
PURR was introduced through Hyperliquid's own channels as the first asset to use the chain's native token standard. The documentation credits Hyperliquid Labs as the entity building the platform, but the individuals behind it are not named in official documentation, and PURR has no separately identified founding team or foundation. Per the project description, 500 million PURR went to holders of Hyperliquid points, the protocol's pre token activity program, and 400 million deployed as HIP-2 Hyperliquidity were burned.
HIP-1 is a capped supply token standard in which the token, its parameters and its spot order book are part of the L1 itself. A deployer sets name, decimal precision, maximum supply and initial balances, and the token automatically receives a native order book quoted in spot USDC, so trading runs against a central limit order book maintained by the chain rather than an automated market maker pool.
PURR is unusual in that its issuer explicitly says it has no planned utility. It is not the protocol's fee, gas or governance asset, and holding it grants no rights over Hyperliquid. Its documented economic property is supply reduction: trading fees paid in PURR are burned, as were the 400 million units originally committed as Hyperliquidity, so the token is described as deflationary.
Most meme tokens are contracts that depend on external automated market makers for liquidity. PURR is a first class asset of a chain built for trading, so its order book, matching and fee burn all happen at the protocol layer. It is also the reference example of HIP-1 and HIP-2 working end to end.
Unlike Dogecoin, PURR is not a proof of work currency with its own miners. Unlike Shiba Inu, Pepe or Bonk, it is not a contract trading in constant product pools, and its supply mechanics come from chain level rules rather than a deployed token contract. Unlike HYPE, the Hyperliquid network asset, PURR carries no staking, fee or governance function.
PURR inherits the security of the Hyperliquid L1, which uses HyperBFT, a consensus algorithm the documentation describes as inspired by HotStuff and its successors. Balances and order state are maintained by the validator set rather than by an application contract, which removes the token contract as an attack surface on the L1 side.
PURR has no cash flows, revenue or promised utility, and the issuer says so directly, so its value rests entirely on community demand. Liquidity is concentrated on few venues and can thin quickly. The burn reduces supply only in proportion to trading activity, so it is not a reliable driver on its own. Meme assets are volatile and can lose most of their value.
PURR was the live test of whether an exchange chain could issue and list tokens without smart contracts, and it remains the clearest worked example of HIP-1 and HIP-2. For anyone comparing order book native issuance with the automated market maker model used elsewhere, it is a useful reference point independent of the token's own merits.
The primary market is the PURR/USDC spot order book on Hyperliquid, which requires depositing USDC into a Hyperliquid account. The HyperEVM version trades on decentralized exchanges operating on HyperEVM. Centralized exchange availability varies over time, so check current listings on venues you use.
Native L1 PURR sits in your Hyperliquid account, controlled by the wallet that signs for it, so that wallet's security is what matters. The HyperEVM version can be held in any EVM compatible wallet, including hardware wallets. Confirm the contract address against an official explorer, since cat themed tokens are frequently impersonated.
