Pocket Network is a decentralized network that sells access to blockchain data and other open data services. Instead of an application paying a single company for an RPC endpoint, it pays the protocol, which routes each request to one of thousands of independently operated nodes and pays whichever node served it. POKT is the native token of that network, and it is staked by every participant and burned every time data is consumed.
Since 2025 the network runs on a rebuilt protocol called Shannon. Shannon is a Cosmos SDK chain with CometBFT consensus, and it widened the product from "RPC for blockchains" to a general coordination layer for any open data service, including hosted APIs and AI model inference. The reference implementation, poktroll, is public and was still receiving commits in September 2026.
Official sources:
Pocket Network began in 2017 with a founding group that included Michael O'Rourke, Luis Correa de Leon and Pabel Nunez Landestoy. The first sovereign mainnet, later known as Morse, launched in July 2020, and the project raised roughly 30 million dollars across token sales.
The organizational structure has since split. Pocket Network Inc., the original company, rebranded as Grove and now operates as a separate gateway and infrastructure business built on top of the protocol. Stewardship of the protocol sits with the Pocket Network Foundation and a token-holder DAO that votes on protocol improvement proposals.
The second major chapter is technical. Shannon was soft launched on March 28, 2025, the hard fork to Shannon mainnet took place on June 3, 2025, and a Cosmovisor cutover completed the transition on June 5, 2025. Account keys moved from ed25519 to secp256k1, Morse was archived with its parameters zeroed, and traffic was redirected. Anyone reading older material about Pocket should assume it describes Morse, not the live network.
Applications and gateways buy access An application stakes POKT to obtain bandwidth on the network. A gateway stakes POKT and signs and relays requests on behalf of applications, which is how most end users reach the network without managing protocol mechanics themselves. The reference gateway software is PATH.
Suppliers serve the data Node operators, called suppliers or servicers, run the data source behind a RelayMiner process and stake POKT against their service. Work is grouped into sessions, and suppliers submit claims and proofs of the relays they served rather than proving every single request, which keeps on-chain cost proportionate to revenue rather than to traffic.
Payment is denominated in dollars, settled in POKT Work is priced in compute units, where one compute unit equals one billionth of a dollar. A governance parameter converts compute units into POKT at the current rate, so the dollar cost of a request stays stable even when the token does not.
Validators finalize the chain A CometBFT validator set produces blocks, applies slashing, and executes the claim and proof settlement that pays suppliers.
POKT is used for:
POKT is not hard capped. Emissions are set by protocol parameters that governance can change, so the issuance schedule is a policy decision rather than a fixed rule. What governance did decide, in PIP-41 passed on January 3, 2026, is a mint ratio below one: for every 100 POKT burned by data consumers, only 97.5 POKT is minted back to network participants. The remainder is never created, so the token becomes more deflationary as usage rises and less so when usage falls.
The dollar-denominated compute unit is the design choice worth understanding. Most crypto infrastructure networks price work in their own token, which means buyers carry token volatility as a cost risk. Pocket prices work in dollars and lets the number of tokens float, so a gateway can budget in fiat terms. The side effect is that a lower token price means more tokens burned per dollar of service, which ties deflationary pressure to real demand rather than to a fixed emission schedule.
The second distinguishing feature is that permissionless participation now runs on both sides. Under Shannon, anyone can add a data source and anyone can serve it, and revenue sharing to data publishers is handled by the protocol rather than by an off-chain agreement.
Security comes from several layers working together:
Users holding the bridged ERC-20 rely on a different trust model. A live read of the Ethereum contract at 0x764a726d9ced0433a8d7643335919deb03a9a935 in September 2026 returned the name Pocket Network, the symbol POKT and six decimals, sitting behind an upgradeable proxy whose implementation exposes role-gated mint, burn and pause functions. That is the expected shape for a bridge wrapper, but it means bridged POKT carries bridge and administrator risk that native POKT does not.
Reading blockchain data is a dependency almost every crypto application has and almost none of them owns. Pocket is one of the few long-running attempts to make that dependency permissionless and to price it in a way a business can plan around. The Shannon rebuild also made the network a plausible settlement layer for open data services beyond RPC, which is a larger market than the one it started in.
POKT trades on centralized exchanges and, in its bridged ERC-20 and SPL forms, on decentralized venues. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction, and it matters which form you are buying: native POKT lives on the Pocket chain, while wrapped POKT lives on Ethereum and several other networks.
POKT has been available on venues including:

Confirm the network before sending, because the same ticker exists in several different forms. The official bridge interface is wpokt.network.
