MSFTon is a tokenized equity wrapper, not a blockchain project. It is a token issued by Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited that is designed to give onchain holders economic exposure to Microsoft Corporation common stock. The token is backed by the underlying security, plus cash in transit, held by the issuer, and it trades and settles on public blockchains instead of through a brokerage account.
The most important point comes first: holding MSFTon is not the same as owning Microsoft shares. Ondo's own documentation states that tokenholders receive economic exposure to the underlying asset, "not direct title to them," and that they do not receive shareholder voting rights, statutory information rights, or other shareholder rights. MSFTon is a claim on an issuer's performance obligation, wrapped as a transferable token.
Because it is a wrapper, MSFTon has no consensus mechanism, validator set, protocol roadmap, or founding engineering team of its own. What matters is the issuer, the assets held against the tokens, the mint and redeem process, and the contract that represents the position onchain.
Official sources:
Ondo Global Markets launched on September 3 2025, initially on Ethereum, with an opening catalog of more than 100 tokenized US stocks and ETFs aimed at non-US investors. Support for BNB Chain and Solana followed, with LayerZero used for cross-chain movement, and Ondo's documentation also describes transferability to HyperEVM through a bridge.
The product line is now presented in Ondo's documentation as Ondo Stocks rather than Ondo Global Markets, and the issuing entity named there is Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited. Ondo has described working with brokerage infrastructure provider Alpaca for access to traditional US equity execution and custody, although the division of duties between issuer, broker, and custodian is given at a high level rather than in contractual detail.
There is no MSFTon whitepaper and no founding team, because the token is one issuance under a broader platform rather than an independent project.
The lifecycle of the token is short, and it is worth reading carefully.
Minting An eligible participant sends stablecoins or cash to the Ondo platform. Ondo routes the corresponding order into traditional US equity markets, acquires the underlying exposure, and issues MSFTon to the participant's wallet. Ondo describes minting and burning as instant, executed atomically, with no mint or burn fees.
Holding Once minted, MSFTon behaves like an ordinary token. It can sit in a self-custodial wallet, move between addresses, be sent to a supported venue, or be used in DeFi protocols that choose to support it.
Redeeming The token is burned and the participant receives stablecoins or cash based on the value of the underlying position. Ondo describes assets as generally trading around the clock on weekdays, with brief pauses between sessions, during corporate actions, and when risk limits are triggered. Selected assets are supported during additional off-hours sessions.
Corporate actions MSFTon is structured as a total-return tracker rather than a strict one-token-to-one-share representation. Dividends are reinvested into the value of the token, net of applicable withholding taxes, which means one token can come to represent more than one share of economic value over time. Stock splits are handled through platform mechanisms rather than by the holder.
On Ethereum, MSFTon is the ERC-20 at 0xb812837b81a3a6b81d7cd74cfb19a7f2784555e5, which reports the name "Microsoft (Ondo Tokenized)", the symbol MSFTon, and 18 decimals. Reading the deployed bytecode directly settles two questions that product copy usually leaves open.
First, that address is not a standalone ERC-20. It is a very small beacon proxy that delegates all of its logic to a shared implementation through the EIP-1967 beacon storage slot. Ondo can therefore change the behavior of the token contract without the address that holders hold ever changing. That is an operational convenience for the issuer and a trust assumption for the holder, and it should be treated as one.
Second, the implementation behind that beacon is an access-controlled ERC-20 exposing mint and burn functions gated by dedicated minter and burner roles. There is no cap in the contract, and no reason there should be: a tokenized equity wrapper is minted on demand against newly acquired underlying shares and burned on redemption, so the outstanding amount expands and contracts with demand. Any description of MSFTon as capped describes something the contract does not implement.
MSFTon is live on Ethereum and BNB Chain as an ERC-20 and BEP-20 respectively, and on Solana, with the Ethereum deployment being the original.
MSFTon does not have protocol utility in the way a native chain token does. There is no staking, no fee burn, no governance vote, and no validator reward. Its usefulness is narrower and more specific:
The distinguishing features are structural rather than technical:
Tokenized stocks fall into three broad groups. Fully backed, redeemable issuances, where an identified issuer holds the underlying and supports mint and redeem, which is where MSFTon sits. Synthetic or derivative exposure, where price is tracked through collateral and an oracle with no claim on a real share behind it. And depositary or transfer-agent style tokens, intended as a record of legal share ownership, which MSFTon explicitly is not, because Ondo states that holders do not receive shareholder rights.
Compared with tokenized Treasury products from the same issuer family, an equity wrapper carries the volatility of a single company rather than short-duration interest rate exposure, a materially different risk profile even though the wrapper mechanics look similar.
Security for a wrapper is layered, and the blockchain is only one of those layers. The asset layer is whether the underlying shares are genuinely held, segregated, and reconciled against tokens outstanding. The issuer layer is the solvency, governance, and jurisdiction of Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited. The contract layer is the beacon proxy, whoever controls its upgrade authority, and the minter and burner roles on the implementation. The chain layer is the security of Ethereum, BNB Chain, or Solana, and of any bridge used to move tokens between them.
MSFTon is most useful as a concrete example of what a working tokenized equity looks like once the narrative is stripped away: a named issuer, a documented backing and redemption process, a total-return structure, an upgradeable onchain representation, and an explicit statement that holders get no shareholder rights. That is the checklist worth applying to any tokenized equity product, and a more reliable guide than the ticker on the label.
Primary issuance happens through the Ondo platform for eligible, onboarded participants. Secondary access, where it exists, is through DeFi venues and trading platforms that list tokenized equities. Availability varies by jurisdiction and by whether the buyer has completed onboarding, so check eligibility before assuming redemption is available.
MSFTon is a standard token on its host chain, so it can be held:
Always confirm the exact contract address on the correct chain before transacting, since names and tickers of this style are trivial to imitate.
