MediBloc is a healthcare data project built around Panacea, its own Cosmos SDK blockchain, and MED is the coin that pays fees, secures the chain through staking and votes in governance. The premise is patient ownership of medical records: instead of a person's history sitting in fragments across clinics that cannot exchange it, the record is held and controlled by the patient and shared with providers and researchers under their consent.
Unlike many 2017-era healthcare blockchain projects, MediBloc has shipped software that clinics actually use: Dr. palette, a cloud electronic health record system for medical institutions, and Medipass, a personal health record app for patients. The chain underneath them is live and has continued to receive upgrades through 2026.
A live check on September 11, 2026 returned chain ID panacea-3 at block height 28,407,461, with the queried node reporting panacea-core 2.3.1 on Cosmos SDK v0.50.15.
Official sources:
MediBloc was founded in 2017 in South Korea by two doctors with engineering backgrounds, Allen Wookyun Kho and Eunsol Lee. Kho trained in computer science and dentistry and previously worked as a software engineer at Samsung Electronics. Initial funding came from a token sale in late 2017. The operating entity today is MediBloc Limited, registered in Gibraltar.
The token's technical history still affects holders. MED was originally issued twice, as a QRC-20 token on Qtum and an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, before the team launched its own chain. Panacea went live in 2019 and a migration window opened that October, swapping legacy balances into native mainnet MED at one legacy token to 0.5 mainnet MED. That migration was never closed with a hard deadline; instead MediBloc runs token swaps twice a year, on June 1 and December 1, and the eleventh completed on June 1, 2026. Legacy QRC-20 and ERC-20 contracts are not the live asset.
Yes, and the distinction between corporate marketing and engineering output matters here. The English-language news page updates infrequently, which has led some observers to assume the project went quiet. The code and the chain say otherwise.
The medibloc/panacea-core repository is active, with commits in September 2026, alongside maintained client libraries and separate mainnet and testnet configuration repositories. The project published quarterly Panacea ecosystem updates in March and June 2026 and announced a completed mainnet upgrade to v2.3.0 on August 21, 2026, following a move to Cosmos SDK v0.50 in mid-July. The Q2 2026 update describes a partner, weavrcare, launching an AI consultation feature inside Dr. palette, and reports Dr. palette reaching roughly 350 partner hospitals. At the time of checking, 23 validators were bonded, including MediBloc Limited itself, Dr.palette, Medipass and Informal Systems alongside independent operators.
Panacea is a Cosmos SDK chain using Tendermint-style consensus with delegated proof of stake, giving it fast finality and a bonded validator set rather than probabilistic confirmation. It supports IBC, so MED can move to and from other Cosmos chains.
Beyond the standard Cosmos modules, the chain adds components specific to health data: an append-only log for data records, decentralized identifier management for patients and institutions, and policy-aware non-fungible tokens that attach usage rules to data. The intended flow is that a clinic using Dr. palette generates records, the patient controls access through Medipass, and any onward sharing happens under consent the chain can record. The chain holds the identity, consent and integrity layer; bulk clinical data is not published on a public ledger.
MED is used for:
MED is inflationary and uncapped. The chain's mint module parameters, read live, set a minimum annual inflation of 7 percent, a maximum of 10 percent, a bonded ratio target of 67 percent, an inflation rate change parameter of 3 percent and 5,256,000 blocks per year. Inflation floats inside that band according to how much MED is staked relative to the target. At the time of checking it sat at the 10 percent ceiling.
The twice-yearly legacy swaps also add previously off-chain balances into the native supply as holders convert. There is no protocol cap and no burn mechanism offsetting issuance, so MED's supply rises over time and unstaked holders are diluted relative to stakers.
Most healthcare blockchain projects from the 2017 cycle either stopped shipping or never had a real customer. MediBloc built a sellable clinical product first and used the chain only for the parts that genuinely benefit from shared infrastructure: identity, consent and record integrity. A hospital adopting Dr. palette is buying an electronic health record system, not a blockchain thesis, which is a far more durable route to adoption. Pharmaceutical companies and healthcare operators running validator nodes reinforces that, giving a different governance profile from a set of professional staking services alone.
Panacea shares its SDK, consensus lineage and IBC connectivity with general-purpose Cosmos chains such as Cosmos Hub or Osmosis, but narrows its custom modules to health data identity and consent. Unlike identity assets such as Civic, it runs its own Layer 1 and its own applications rather than a service on someone else's chain. Unlike enterprise networks such as VeChain or IoTeX, the attested data is clinical rather than logistical, which brings a far heavier regulatory overlay.
Consensus security comes from the bonded validator set and the MED staked with it, with slashing for double-signing and downtime and an unbonding delay before staked coins become liquid. With 23 bonded validators the set is small by the standards of large Cosmos chains, so validator distribution and voting-power concentration are worth checking on an explorer.
Data security is separate. Clinical records are governed by health privacy law in every jurisdiction the product operates in, so the design keeps sensitive content off the public ledger and uses the chain for identity, consent and integrity references. Any assessment of platform safety should look at how those off-chain stores are protected and audited, not only at chain-level security.
MediBloc is one of the few surviving examples of a 2017 healthcare blockchain that turned into a working business. The chain has produced blocks since 2019, moved to a current Cosmos SDK line in 2026, and sits underneath clinical software with real hospital deployments. That does not settle whether MED captures the value the products create, but it makes MediBloc a different case from the many health data tokens that never got past a whitepaper.
MED is listed on several centralized exchanges, with the deepest support historically on Korean venues including Upbit, Bithumb and Korbit, alongside international exchanges such as Gate. It also exists as an IBC-denominated asset on Cosmos decentralized exchanges such as Osmosis. Check whether a listing is native mainnet MED or an IBC representation, since withdrawal paths and staking eligibility differ.
MED is a Cosmos SDK native coin, so Cosmos-compatible wallets are the correct choice. Keplr and Leap both support Panacea accounts, and a Ledger device can be used through them for key storage. Staking, delegation and governance voting work from those wallets or through Mintscan. If you hold MED as an IBC asset on another chain, transfer it back to Panacea before staking, and if you hold a legacy QRC-20 or ERC-20 balance, use the official swap process rather than trying to bridge it.
