CVC is an ERC-20 token issued in 2017 by Civic Technologies for a decentralized identity network. It is one of the longer-lived tokens from that era, and understanding it today requires separating two things that have come apart: the token, which still exists and still trades, and the company, which has moved on to a business that does not use it.
Civic Technologies is very much alive and shipping. It is not a defunct project. But as of 2026 its public product line consists of Bryn, an agent that watches product, website, and CRM signals for sales teams, plus Auth by Civic for logins and MCP by Civic, a gateway that gives AI agents scoped, auditable access to other tools. The company's own machine-readable site summary describes it as the layer between AI agents and the tools they call. Across the current marketing site and documentation there is essentially no mention of CVC, blockchain settlement, or a token requirement.
The token itself is unchanged on chain. A live read of the Ethereum contract on 11 September 2026 confirms 8 decimals and a fixed total supply of exactly 1,000,000,000 CVC. Bridged representations also exist on Polygon and Energi. CVC is a pre-minted, uncapped-issuance-free token: there is no mining, no staking emission, and no protocol minting new units.
Official sources:
Civic Technologies was founded in 2015 by Vinny Lingham and Jonathan Smith, with Lingham as chief executive. It raised funding from investors including Blockchain Capital and Pantera Capital and ran its token sale in June 2017, one of the higher-profile identity offerings of that cycle.
The original design was straightforward. Users would verify their identity once with a trusted validator, hold the resulting attestation in a Civic app, and present it to any service that needed it. CVC was the settlement asset in that marketplace: identity requesters paid identity validators in CVC for reusable verification, avoiding repeated document checks.
That model was later reworked into Civic Pass, a permissioning product that issued on-chain passes so decentralized applications, particularly on Solana, could gate access to verified or unique users. It ran for several years and was integrated by a number of Solana protocols.
On 11 June 2025 Civic announced that Civic Pass would be sunset. CAPTCHA and identity verification were discontinued on 1 July 2025, and uniqueness and liveness functionality ended on 31 July 2025. The company said it was reallocating engineering resources toward authentication and, explicitly, toward the identity layer for agentic AI. That announcement is the clearest dividing line in the project's history.
Civic's current systems are conventional web infrastructure, not blockchain protocols, and describing them accurately matters more than fitting them into a crypto frame.
Auth by Civic A single login layer covering human users, wallets, and AI agents. It includes embedded wallet support, the one place where the current product line still touches crypto directly.
MCP by Civic A gateway built on the Model Context Protocol. Instead of giving an AI agent direct credentials to Gmail, a database, or a SaaS API, the agent is pointed at one Civic endpoint that brokers access to a catalog of tools behind policy controls, with runtime guardrails, audit logs, and instant revocation.
Bryn A go-to-market agent built on Auth and MCP. It watches signals across a company's product, website, and CRM, scores accounts, and runs approved workflows, with an approval mode and a kill switch.
None of these require CVC to function. The company's GitHub organization is active, with regular commits in September 2026 across MCP tooling, documentation, and agent integrations, so this is a working software business rather than a wind-down.
The documented utility of CVC is the original one: payment between identity requesters and identity validators inside the Civic identity marketplace. That was the basis of the 2017 whitepaper and remains the token's stated purpose in most reference material.
What cannot be established from current primary sources is any active role for CVC in the products Civic ships today. Bryn, Auth, and MCP are sold as software subscriptions priced in dollars, and the company's documentation, product pages, and machine-readable site summaries describe no token requirement, staking mechanism, fee burn, or revenue share.
CVC therefore functions in practice as a freely traded ERC-20 token with a fixed supply, associated with a company whose current business does not consume it. Evaluate it on that basis rather than on the 2017 documentation.
The company spent a decade on the problem of proving who someone is and granting them limited access, then applied that work to AI agents before most of the market recognized the category. The premise behind the current products, that an agent needs an identity and enforceable limits in the same way a human employee does, is a continuation of the identity thesis rather than an unrelated pivot.
For the token, the distinguishing feature is less flattering: CVC is a clear example of a network asset that outlived the network it was designed for.
CVC is an ERC-20 token, so its security is Ethereum's. The contract has been live since 2017 with a fixed supply and no minting function in operation, so there is no issuance risk from the token side.
Bridged representations on Polygon and Energi are different. They depend on the specific bridge and the chain hosting them and do not inherit Ethereum's guarantees. Treat them as separate assets with separate risk.
Civic is a useful reference point for what happens to a token when the company behind it succeeds at something other than what the token was issued for. The identity thesis survived, the crypto implementation of it did not, and the asset remained. That pattern is common across 2017-era projects, and Civic documents it more openly than most, having published the Civic Pass sunset with specific dates rather than letting the product quietly decay.
CVC is listed on centralized exchanges and can be traded on Ethereum decentralized exchanges. Support has narrowed over time on some venues, so availability and pairs should be checked directly and vary by jurisdiction.
CVC has been listed on venues including:
Pairs are typically quoted against USDT and BTC where supported.
CVC can be held on an exchange, which is custodial, in any Ethereum-compatible self-custody wallet, or behind a hardware wallet using compatible software.
Note that CVC uses 8 decimals rather than the more common 18, which occasionally causes display issues in wallets that assume the default. Confirm which chain you are withdrawing to, since the Ethereum, Polygon, and Energi versions are not interchangeable.
