DoubleZero is a permissionless protocol for building and operating a dedicated fiber network for blockchains and other distributed systems. Instead of sending validator traffic over the public internet, it coordinates underused private fiber links and hardware contributed by independent operators, aiming for lower and more predictable latency. 2Z is the native token on Solana, used to pay for connectivity and to compensate contributors.
Official resources:
DoubleZero was founded by Austin Federa, Andrew McConnell and Mateo Ward. Federa previously led strategy at the Solana Foundation and holds an executive role at the DoubleZero Foundation, while McConnell and Ward are associated with Malbec Labs, the engineering group behind the protocol software. A testnet ran through 2025 and mainnet beta launched with the 2Z token in October 2025, following a public sale on CoinList.
The whitepaper describes a control plane for orchestration, a data plane carrying traffic, and a ledger recording contribution and token flow. Contributors supply fiber capacity plus hardware such as switches and FPGA devices, and users connect through tunnels to nearby devices. Inbound traffic is edge-filtered at that hardware in a way the documentation calls non-discretionary, stripping duplicates and spam before they reach a validator, while outbound traffic is routed more directly using unicast and multicast.
2Z launched with an initial mint of 10 billion tokens on Solana, and its documented roles are payment for connectivity and rewards to contributors from collected revenue. Rewards use a Shapley value model estimating each contributor's marginal improvement to speed and throughput against the public internet fallback, so payment tracks measured benefit rather than raw capacity. An initial validator seat fee of 5 percent of certain validator revenues was later retired in favor of subscription income from DoubleZero Edge, with revenue used to buy 2Z, 10 percent burned and the rest split between contributors, originating validators and client teams.
Most crypto infrastructure sits above the network layer, while DoubleZero sits below it and treats physical transport as the thing to decentralize. Filtering happens at contributor hardware rather than at the validator, and multicast gives every subscriber in a location the same data at once.
Helium decentralizes wireless coverage, Filecoin storage, and Akash Network, io.net and Aethir compute, while DoubleZero decentralizes transport. That is a narrower market with a harder bar, since a contributed link only earns if it beats the public internet.
The 2Z token relies on Solana for transfers and accounting, while the network itself is secured operationally, through measurement against a public internet benchmark, staking with slashing, non-discretionary edge filtering, and fallback to the public internet if a path degrades. DoubleZero does not secure the chains that use it.
The network is young and its economics were already revised once, so current fee, burn and distribution figures may not hold, and demand is concentrated among Solana validators and trading firms. Physical infrastructure carries capital and operating risk, a small contributor set could become a censorship surface, and buyback-driven demand depends on subscription revenue that may not persist.
Latency is a real constraint on high-throughput chains that faster software cannot fully solve, because the bottleneck is physical distance and congested public routing. DoubleZero treats that as an addressable market and pays for it with a token tied to measured performance.
2Z trades on several centralized exchanges and, as an SPL token, on Solana decentralized exchanges. Availability varies by jurisdiction, so confirm the correct token through official channels and watch for lookalike tickers.
Any Solana-compatible wallet can hold 2Z, including Phantom, Solflare and Backpack, and Ledger devices can be paired with them for offline key storage. Leaving tokens on an exchange means the exchange controls the keys, so self-custody with a stored recovery phrase is safer.
