Wormhole is a cross-chain messaging protocol that lets an application on one blockchain emit a message that contracts on another can verify and act on, the primitive underneath token transfers, cross-chain governance and multichain apps. Messages leave a Core Contract, are signed by independent Guardians into a Verifiable Action Approval, or VAA, and are relayed onward for verification. W is the native token, used for governance of the Wormhole DAO, and it exists natively on Solana and several EVM chains rather than as a wrapper.
Official resources:
Wormhole was originally developed by Certus One, founded in 2018 and acquired by Jump Trading in August 2021. Stewardship has since moved to the Wormhole Foundation.
The defining event in its history was the exploit of 2 February 2022, when an attacker fraudulently minted 120,000 wrapped Ether on Solana, worth roughly $320 million at the time. Jump Crypto deposited 120,000 ETH to make the bridge whole, and the team said afterwards that "all funds have been restored, and Wormhole is back up." The W token launched on 3 April 2024, with 617 million tokens, 6 percent of the 10 billion supply, airdropped, and staking for governance went live that June.
An application contract calls the Core Contract on the source chain to emit a message. Guardians run full nodes on every supported chain rather than light clients, so they can detect consensus attacks or forks, and a supermajority of their signatures forms a VAA. Relayers, standardized by the Executor framework, carry it to the destination chain, where the Core Contract verifies it and triggers the receiving application. Applications pick a consistency level, setting how much source-chain finality Guardians wait for. Native Token Transfers, or NTT, sit on top, letting a project keep its own token contract on every chain instead of wrapped derivatives.
W is a governance asset. Holders stake it to participate in the Wormhole DAO, where proposals cover protocol upgrades, fee models and connection management, and staking neither locks the tokens nor transfers ownership. Staking runs on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism and Base, with W also native on Solana through NTT.
Wormhole is a generic messaging layer first and a bridge second, which is why its product surface reaches governance and cross-chain state reads rather than transfers alone. Its coverage spans EVM and non-EVM chains, with Guardians running full nodes on all of them.
LayerZero also provides generic messaging but lets each application pick its own oracle and relayer stack, whereas Wormhole applies one Guardian set uniformly. Axelar runs its own proof-of-stake chain to route messages, and Hyperlane emphasizes permissionless deployment with modular security. Across and Stargate focus on transfers, not arbitrary messaging.
Message validity requires 13 of 19 Guardians to sign, and a two-thirds supermajority governs contract upgrades and changes to the Guardian set. The Global Accountant tracks bridged asset supply across chains and blocks transfers that break the supply invariant, while the Governor delays unusually large flows. The documentation reports 29 third-party audits and a bug bounty.
The security model rests on a fixed set of 19 Guardians, so compromise of 13 would suffice to sign fraudulent messages. That is a stronger assumption than a light-client or zero-knowledge design, and it is what to weigh when routing value through the protocol. Wormhole has already been exploited once at scale.
Liquidity and users are spread across dozens of chains that cannot see each other, and closing that gap is a prerequisite for serious multichain applications. Wormhole is one of the few interoperability layers running in production on both EVM and non-EVM chains.
W trades on many centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges across the chains where it is native, including Solana, Ethereum, Arbitrum and Base. Because it is native on each chain, the chain you buy on determines the wallet you need.
For the Solana version, use a wallet such as Phantom, Solflare or Backpack. On Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism and Base, any EVM wallet such as MetaMask or Rabby holds it, and those are the chains where staking is available. Ledger and Trezor work with either, and W moves between chains through NTT.
